Hi all you linguists.... The first document that requires translation is on the web. This document was sent in by Ray Hoffpauir.... here's what he said about it: 304 - October 15, 1783 Land sale from Josine, free mulattresse, with consent of her husband, Louis Richard, to Hoffpauer. The original was legal size (8 1/2 x 14) and Ray had to scan each page in two parts... I stitched the two parts of each page together again, so the document if you just download and print it will require the use of legal size paper. It is two pages long, and each page is a separate image on the web site. You can get to page 1 by clicking here: http://users.ev1.net/~charlieh/304-1.jpg and page 2 here: http://users.ev1.net/~charlieh/304-2.jpg The contrast is poor, and so the documents are hard to read, even if you do read French, and of course the script is sometimes difficult to read also, so good luck to everyone. I suggest that as you translate you post your results, and if you have a problem with any part also post questions about what you don't understand or can't make out, so that maybe someone else will have a suggestion. If you do post about this document, please use the number Ray used, 304, in the subject line, or if a question about one of the pages, also include the page number as 304-1 or 304-2. One more suggestion... if you have an image viewer that will view jpg files, it may be easier to read the document from your viewing screen, rather than printing it out, because you can magnify any portion of it. Also, you tend to lose some detail when printing. Ray says that the other document is in better shape, so it should be easier to read and interpret. I'll try to have it posted later today. -- Charlie Hoffpauir http://web.wt.net/~charlieh/ http://www.refurl.com/y2k_bug.gif (for a chuckle)
