Hi all you linguists.... The first document that requires translation is on the web. This document was sent in by Ray Hoffpauir.... here's what he said about it: 304 - October 15, 1783 Land sale from Josine, free mulattresse, with consent of her husband, Louis Richard, to Hoffpauer. The original was legal size (8 1/2 x 14) and Ray had to scan each page in two parts... I stitched the two parts of each page together again, so the document if you just download and print it will require the use of legal size paper. It is two pages long, and each page is a separate image on the web site. You can get to page 1 by clicking here: http://users.ev1.net/~charlieh/304-1.jpg and page 2 here: http://users.ev1.net/~charlieh/304-2.jpg The contrast is poor, and so the documents are hard to read, even if you do read French, and of course the script is sometimes difficult to read also, so good luck to everyone. I suggest that as you translate you post your results, and if you have a problem with any part also post questions about what you don't understand or can't make out, so that maybe someone else will have a suggestion. If you do post about this document, please use the number Ray used, 304, in the subject line, or if a question about one of the pages, also include the page number as 304-1 or 304-2. One more suggestion... if you have an image viewer that will view jpg files, it may be easier to read the document from your viewing screen, rather than printing it out, because you can magnify any portion of it. Also, you tend to lose some detail when printing. Ray says that the other document is in better shape, so it should be easier to read and interpret. I'll try to have it posted later today. -- Charlie Hoffpauir http://web.wt.net/~charlieh/ http://www.refurl.com/y2k_bug.gif (for a chuckle)

I can read and translate French! I believe I saw the slave sale to Brunet many years ago and may already have a translation of it in my files. I can translate French also. Hugh Guilbeau
Ray, if you're going to scan the documents you listed for transmission, I'd certainly like a copy. Sound like Randy will be able to give you a better translation that my high school French and yellowed dictionaire. Archie
If anyone is aware of a source for a reproducible (photocopy, scan) specimen of the signatures of Thomas Hoffpauer or his son Francois Hoffpauer, I would appreciate the information. Trying to assemble a collection of the first seven generations of my son's line as a gift to him. Still looking for the first two generations. Thanks. Archie
Ray, I can read some french. I'm slow but will give it my best shot. Randy
Charlie, I have the documents from which I provided you the signatures last year. I obtained them from the court house in Opelousas (of course they're in French). Hi all, We are about to lose two subscribers from the mail list because their mail is being rejected.... perhaps they have a new mail address, in which case they should simply re-subscribe to the mail list. (Any mail-list messages that fail to reach their destination "bounce" back to Rootsweb. After a few bounces, those addresses are automatically unsubscribed.) So if anyone ever finds themselves in a situation where they are not receiving mail list messages, they should either write a note to me, or simply re-subscribe. The Timeline for Thomas is growing, thanks to data from Anna Marie Hayes (Natchez Court House Records). Visit the web page http://web.wt.net/~charlieh/ and click on Timeline for Thomas to view the latest information. I was told by Nelle Mang that Thomas had some business deals recorded in 1781 and 1783 in Louisiana, but I don't have the source information and have never actually seen the records. Does anyone have any further information on these: 1781, St. Landry, business transaction with Alex. de Clouet; 1783, bought land from Josine & Louis Richard in Louisiana. Also, I understand that Thomas made testimony in Opelousas at the Land Office in 1812. Does anyone have information on that? -- Charlie Hoffpauir http://web.wt.net/~charlieh/ http://www.refurl.com/y2k_bug.gif (for a chuckle)
Hi all, especially those of you looking into the origin of Thomas.... I think it would be a good idea to compile a timeline for our Thomas. I know a few of you have something of this sort already underway.... If you have something ready for publication, I'd be happy to post it on the Thomas web site. Until then, I've started a timeline and put it up on my newly revised web page. To check it out, just click on the address under my sig, below, and from the list of items, click on the timeline for Thomas. While there you might want to look at a few of the reports, charts or "books" that I have included, but be advised, they generally take a long time to load. The timeline, on the other hand, is quite small so far, and so will load almost instantly. Not all of the items are comlete, so if you get an error message "File not Found" just click your browser's BACK button and try another item. As I mentioned, I've just started it, but if anyone wants to contribute any data and sources, I'd be happy to add to it.... just send it to me or post it to the list and I'll see that it's added. Also, in case anyone is curious, we now have 58 subscribers to the mailing list. -- Charlie Hoffpauir http://web.wt.net/~charlieh/ http://www.refurl.com/y2k_bug.gif (for a chuckle)

Felton, Do you think this is the Wayne Hoffpauir mentioned in Mickey's obit? Looking at the birth dates of his children, I'd say he must have been an older brother of Mickey... hopefully someone will have additional information, or George can verify some of this when I talk to him. Archie, I've heard the story since I was a child. I used to think it had to have some truth to it, but after searching for anything at all to confirm any part of it, and not finding any evidence, I now believe that it is either completely wrong, or it has become so mixed up with other stories that it's impossible to tell what is true and what is fiction. If you study other family histories, it amazing how many of them have a similar story about the family origin. It almost makes me think that all families had three brothers who emigrated to the new world! Several people are now actively trying to find some evidence of where Thomas Hoffpauir came from, and how he got to Louisiana. Perhaps if we ever find that out, it will shed some light on this story. Does anyone know who this Mickey Hoffpauir is? I just found out that her funeral was today. According to someone who attended the funeral, her maiden name was Mickey Hoffpauir, and she and George were originally from Crowley, LA. 1 Mickey Hoffpauir b: 17 Jun 1933 d: 25 Sep 1999 in Alvin, TX .. +George Cooper m: in Crowley, LA I don't know anything else about them, but in a couple of weeks I'll try to contact George and ask him about their children, and if he knows who Mickey's parents were. -- Charlie Hoffpauir http://web.wt.net/~charlieh/

Archie This story goes way back to at least the 1930's. I really think it is heresay. In doing genealogy for the last 30+ years, I have found this story of three brothers (usually one stowing away on a ship to avoid military service) accuring many times in many different lines all over the country. I don't know why but it just seems that all families come up with the same type of stories to explain the unknown. I believe several years ago I looked at a passenger list fot the LeBeaumont and did not find anyone who resembled Thomas. I am certainly open to being proven wrong. Felton
