    3. Sharon, I don't believe that Starkus and Malissa were twins, in fact, I believe that they were born about a year apart. I use as my reference for this the fact that they are both listed as children in the household of Nathan Hoffpauir in the 1860 census of Lafayette Parish. Starkus is listed as Mackor (?) 2 years old, and Mallisa is listed as Malian, 1 year old. This kind of entry seems unlikely if they were actually twins. To view this information, go to this URL: ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/la/lafayette/census/laf1860.txt and use your browser to search for "Naham Hoffpauir" (note the spelling is Naham, not Nathan). 2. Thank you Charlie and Barbara for the reply re: Starkus and Malissa. I have Malissa's birthdate (from her headstone) as 1858. I'm still trying to sort out this part of my family. Just as a side note, my daughter is named for Malissa. I visited Malissa's grave with my Aunt Mary Ruth (Griffin Lawton) when I was 16 and fell in love with that name. Best regards, Sharon

    2. Hello again, I have a question. My records show that Francis Hoffpauir and his sister Amilda married their cousins Malissa and Starkus Hoffpauir. Malissa and Starkus were also siblings. My question is this....were Malissa and Starkus also twins? My records show they were both born in 1858. Now, I realize that this doesn't necessarily mean they were twins, but they might be and I recall my dad saying something about twins and his mother's family. Does anyone have any info on this? 3. Sharon, This is interesting and very important information. However, Frank must have been talking about his great-grandfather, Thomas. His Grandfather was Francois Hoffpauir, born in about 1781 in the Opelousas Territory, Louisiana. Also fascinating is the story about going from Germany to France and marrying a French girl..... If we assume Frank was speaking about Thomas here, this sounds very plausible. If so, it "may" hint that Thomas had a previous wife. At least it gives us some more places to look for further information. I'm looking forward to hearing more from your Aunt Margie. Also, when you get a chance, ask her where and when she married. 2. Hello list, I have recently had correspondence from my aunt Margie in Amite, LA regarding her grandfather, Frank Hoffpauir. I had enquired of her whether or not her grandfather's family did indeed speak French in the home as was reported to me. Marjorie Mae Griffin Young is the youngest daughter of Mineola Hoffpauir and Daniel Griffin. Mineola was the daughter of Frank and Malissa Hoffpauir. She was acquainted with her grandfather. This is what she says on the subject: "He spoke some broken German and French, but did not know but a few phrases and introductory words - like "How are you?" Mother, Aunt Ruth, Aunt Dolly and the others picked up on the "Cajun" dialect some--but not in great detail. Grandpa seemed prouder of his German connection - since his grandfather went from Germany to France, married French girls and then to the US and South LA. " Later in her letter, she tells me that her Aunt Ruth (whom she also calls 'mother' since Ruth raised her after Mineola died) said the Hoffpauir name was spelled Hoffbauer in Germany and the spelling was changed in France. She promises to send me further information on the Hoffpauirs in Calcasieu Parish when her hand heals and she can write easier. Best regards and Happy New Year to all, Sharon Dulcich

    1. Van Hoffpauir
    2. Charlie
    3. I need some help sorting out which Van Hoffpauir. I think I merged two different people some time ago, because now I believe that I have two different Van Hoffpauirs. Here is the data I have: Van Hoffpauir: buried Ebenezer,Sec A Row 19 No 2 b. 16 Jun 1906 d. 4 Oct 1970 (Tombstone & SSDI) Last known res Esterwood, LA Geneva Spell Hoffpauir: buried Ebenezer, Sec A Row 19 No 1 b. 24 Dec 1898 or 1899 d. 6 Dec 1993 (Tombstone & SSDI) Last known res Esterwood, LA I'm pretty sure that these two were husband & wife..... Now I have this couple: Van Crow Hoffpauir buried Ritchie Cem in Sulphur? b. 11 Dec 1895 d. Aug 1968 Last known res. Sulphur, LA Obit, LCAP 25 Aug 1968 Corrine Granger Hoffpauir (wife of Van Hoffpauir ?) d. 24 Dec 1965 Obit LCAP 23 Dec 1965 And had this Van married to both Geneva and Corrine, and now I'm pretty certain that was wrong. I think the parents of Van Crow Hoffpauir were Starkus Hoffpauir and Amilda Cordelia Hoffpauir. Does anyone know who the parents of my "first" Van Hoffpauir were? Or can anyone supply any information about the Van Hoffpauir from Esterwood, that can help us determine where he fits in the family? -- Charlie Hoffpauir http://web.wt.net/~charlieh/

    1. More family information?
    2. Charlie
    3. since sonmeone asked.... Here's a family that I don't really have a lot of information on. I know the Hoffpauirs and the Istres have had earlier connections, and I'm wondering if the Istre line that ties into this family is also descended from an earlier Hoffpauir-Istre connection? Does anyone happen to know who the parents of the Harris J. Istre that married Ella Hoffpauir were? For that matter, does anyone have any more information about ANY members of this family? 3. Ken, I have noticed the same thing. Have to admit I haven't made any postings lately, though. Reckon it's the season. List, I am still looking for a specimen of the signature of Francois Hoffpauer, son of the patriarch. His is the only one I lack in the 8 generations of my line (or my son's line...he's the 8th). Any clues you can give would be appreciated. Happy holidays. Archie Hoffpauir

    3. Felton Thanks for the quick reply! We have no other information other than his name was Clyde Hoffpauir on the birth cert. Agnes would never speak to no one of him and no one seems to know anything about him. We knew of his father before Woodrow died but he knew nothing of him other than from around the Crowley area. So we are at present only guessing as to which one it would have been. Hoping one of the children of one of the clydes will remember their father talking of another child he had before he got married. 3. Mike, Have you tried following Woodrow's line (if there is a line) to some descendants who may be able to provide some family information? Also, there is a Clyde Hoffpauir in the Social Security Death Index: Social Security Death Index: U.S., 1937-1997 Hoffpauir, Clyde Birth date : 29 Nov 1903 Issued in : Louisiana Death date : Feb 1968 SS# : 434-09-4178 Residence code : Louisiana Zip code of last known residence : 70526 (Crowley, LA) Although the SSDI says dob is 1903, his tombstone says 1902. I don't show any children for him at all, so I guess he could be a possibility? Is there any indication of either parents age at the time of Woodrow's birth? I think this is sometimes included on the birth certificate. 3. Felton and others, The Richard I am seeing (in the obits) is still alive and practicing. The reason I happened to mention it today, is because he is mentioned in an obit in today's LCAP: SULPHUR -- Funeral services for Mrs. Kermit Manley Prejean, 81, will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 29, in Hixson Funeral Home. The Rev. Richard Hoffpauir will officiate. Burial will be in Mimosa Pines Cemetery. Visitation is 2-10 p.m. Sunday and from 8:30 a.m. Monday. Mrs. Prejean died Friday, Nov. 26, 1999, in Sulphur. A native of Morgan City, she had lived in Sulphur for the past 50 years. She was a librarian for 34 years, retiring in 1985. She was a member of the AARP Local Senior Citizens Group and the Elderberry's Senior Citizen's Group. She had been a member of Henning Memorial United Methodist Church for 50 years. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Paul (Gayle) LeBlanc of Splendora, Texas; one brother, B.A. Manley of Carrollton, Texas; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
