    3. I was wondering if anyone is of this direct line, or has knowledge of it, and could answer a few questions..... Are Euphemie and Esepheny really the same person, or are there really two different daughters. Also do you have any details about either of their husbands? Was there both a Nemar and Naamon, or are these two really the same person? If different, do you have any information on Nemar? Any other information anyone can add will be appreciated. 1. Albert George
    2. Dear List, I found the following while 'surfing the net' today......the URL for the entire page is: http://www.gbgm-umc.org/history/hist6.htm <<Rev. A.D. George: 1936-1938 Rev. A.D. George was appointed to the Houma charge in 1936. He served Houma for two years. The membership of the Houma charge was almost 600. There were eight churches in the charge and two parsonages. C.J. Thibodeaux was assigned as the supply French preacher to the area for the third year. During Rev. George's tenure, the rolls were purged. Of the 656 members, 266 were removed in just one year. The number of churches on the Houma circuit decreased to four. Rev. George was born at Montpelier, Louisiana on September 20, 1887. After he was licensed to preach in 1908, he went to Centenary College. After college, he married Susan Ruth Hoffpauir. She was remembered as a good Bible teacher. The Georges worked together as a team. She always contributed her talents to his ministry. They had one son, one daughter, and one foster daughter. It was said that his congregations never wanted to give him up. Rev. George lived a life filled with good works. He died in Hattiesburg, Mississippi on July 12, 1974. Evangelism meetings were still popular, but their length was getting shorter. April of 1937, however, brought an old time revival to Houma. It lasted from April 11 to 25. Rev. George said that he felt led to have a series of meetings. One of the most fruitful parts was the sessions held after each night's meetings. The pastor and his helpers would meet with those seeking counsel and prayer. In addition to a number of adults, twenty-five young people and children accepted Christ during the two weeks. Now, let us look at a typical Sunday in the old Red Brick Church at this time. The Sunday schedule at this time consisted of: Sunday School at 9:30 a.m.; Morning Service at 10:45 a.m.; Epworth League at 6:30 p.m.; Evening Service at 7:15 p.m. Prayer meeting was held on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. >> There was also a reference to a Miss Hoffpauir in this paragraph........ DULAC INDIAN MISSION <<The first class began on October 1, 1932. There were 75 students, ages six through twenty. Everyone was in the first grade, since none of them had ever been to school before. Classes were held in an old-fashioned, high ceiling overseer's home that Miss Hooper taught and lived in. Sometimes, classes were held out on the porch or in the yard under an oak tree. Besides teaching school, the Methodist workers would teach religious classes twice a week. The school was for all Indians, regardless of their religious beliefs. Miss Wilhelmina Hooper was assisted in the early days by a Miss Hoffpauir. Sharon Dulcich granddaughter of Mineola Hoffpauir Griffin

    1. Descendants of S.R. Hoffpauir
    2. Barbara Hill
    3. Dear Hoffpauirs, It has taken me a long time to get to this point. Here, as far as I know at present, are the descendants of Samuel Rufus ("Roy") HOFFPAUIR, from the little-known line of Francois/Francis and Malissa Hoffpauir. His paternal line, going backwards, is: Francis, Manoah, Manoah Francois, Thomas. Samuel Rufus HOFFPAUIR (S.R., "Roy") was born 29 October 1891 in Rayne, Acadia Parish, Louisiana, and died 15 May 1981 in Carmichael, Sacramento County, California. He married Gertrude Marie DAMKIER on 1 September 1912 in California (probably Fresno). She was the daughter of Niels Damkier and Anne Hansen, natives of Denmark. She was born 23 July 1892 in or near Fresno, California and died 30 June 1994 in Mokelumne Hill, Calaveras Co., California, less than a month shy of the age of 102. Her sight had dimmed, her bones were very fragile, and her hearing had become very bad, but her mind was clear until the very end. I attended her 100th birthday at the home of her daughter Shirley. Roy and Gertrude Hoffpauir lived in Fresno, Calif.; later in Oakland, Calif.; then in Fair Oaks, Calif. from about 1958 to 1981. Roy had also spent some time in Arizona, possibly near one of his brothers, but I don't know if that was before or after his marriage. Children: 1. Francis Marvin HOFFPAUIR, born 24 June 1913, Fresno, Fresno County, Calif.; died 13 January 1983, San Bernardino, Riverside County, Calif.; buried at Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside, CA. He was a Staff Sgt. during World War II, serving in Europe; later became a civil engineer with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. Known as "Marvin" when young, he became "Frank" in the Army and went by that for the rest of his life. He was active in the Lions Club for many years and was a member of the Congregational Church. He married (1) Mary TRIMBLE, about 1941, Fresno, Calif.; she is said to have been a Canadian. They had no children and were divorced some time prior to 1957. (2) Mabel Corinne GRAVES, on 6 January 1958, in Eureka, Humboldt County, Calif. They had no children; I am Corinne's daughter by a previous marriage; Frank and Corinne were divorced in about 1975. Corinne was born 16 December 1916 in Gaston, Washington Co., Oregon, and died in March 1989 in Redding, Shasta County, Calif. Frank married (3) Harriet C. [last name unknown], about 1976. She had a grown daughter by a previous marriage. Frank and Corinne lived in Eureka, Calif. from 1958 to 1962; in Napa, Calif. for a few years; in Rock Springs, Wyoming about 1968-1969; then in San Bernardino, Calif. from about 1970 until Corinne moved to Redding in 1976. Frank and Harriet lived in San Bernardino. 2. Bernice Alene HOFFPAUIR was born 29 July 1916 [probably in Fresno] and died 28 May 1971 in San Diego, San Diego County, Calif. She married (1) Fred HAWTHORNE; they were divorced. (2) Smitty SMITH; he died. (3) Andrew ("Andy") OFFT, who survived her. Andy was born 14 November 1917 and died April 1991. Children of Bernice HOFFPAUIR and Fred HAWTHORNE: (a) Judy HAWTHORNE, born 13 November 1935. She married Don FORWARD; and Gayle HILTON; I do not know in which order. I have her children listed under Gayle HILTON: 1. Gary; 2. Glenn; and 3. Gaylene, who was born 22 January 1959. I met these children when they were quite young, but have not kept in touch. My impression is that most of this family lives in Colorado and that Judy has some grandchildren. (b) Jo Anne HAWTHORNE, born 9 September 1937; died 27 June 1996 in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona. She married (1) Don STEWART; (2) Tom [last name unknown]; (3) Al JIFKINS. I am pretty sure she had at least two children by her first husband and that the oldest one was a girl, who would have been born about 1956 or 1957. In 1958 I believe they were living in Oakland, Calif. as Don was a sailor in the U.S. Navy then, and Jo Anne was expecting their second child. I do not know the total number of Jo Anne's children or their names. If anyone has access to the Phoenix newspapers, I'd appreciate an obituary. (3) Shirley Rae HOFFPAUIR was born 4 February 1927 in Fresno, Fresno County, Calif. She married Bert Francis ALEXANDER on 10 May 1947 in Oakland, Alameda County, Calif. Bert was born 23 June 1918 in Checotah, McIntosh County, Oklahoma; his family was from the vicinity of Cuero, Texas before that. Bert was a pilot in the Army Air Corps during World War II and saw service in both the European and Pacific campaigns. He remained in the Air Force after the war and was stationed in various places, such as El Paso, Okinawa, and North Carolina in addition to California. After retiring from the Air Force, Bert had a second career in local government in Sacramento County, Calif. Shirley has been a homemaker; both are now active in Eastern Star and the Methodist Church and live in Mokelumne Hill, Calif. Children of Shirley Hoffpauir and Bert Alexander: (a) Helen Kay ALEXANDER, born 30 August 1950; married (1) George Martin VOGEL; no children; divorced. (2) Douglas WOODS; no children. (b) Raymond Brian ALEXANDER, born 16 January 1959. He married (1) Doreen BONNER about 1982; divorced. They had one son, Ian Brian ALEXANDER, born 31 July 1983. Ray married (2) Jennifer WHITE; she had a son, Ryan Raymond, by a previous marriage; he was born 9 December 1980; I believe that Ray has adopted Ryan so his stepson would now be Ryan Raymond ALEXANDER. This family lives in Lake County, Calif. in the vicinity of Clear Lake. If anyone can add to any of the above, I'll be very grateful. Although the name HOFFPAUIR has died out in this line, the "genes" continue on... Barbara Hill <bhill@uclink4.berkeley.edu>

    2. Charlie, Correction: May Beals, the wife for about 5 years of Erasco J. Hoffpauir, was born in Jasper County, Iowa in 1879, not in Alexandria, LA. Her name was not Mary. The marriage record in Acadia Parish may have been misread by whoever submitted the information to Rev. Hebert for his books. Also, she died in Jackson, LA where she was a patient in the East Louisiana Mental Hospital. Her burial was in Jennings, LA with services at the First Presbyterian Church. I may have some more Erasco Hoffpauir info coming shortly. Alma B. Reed

Now Vina Sarver could easily be Lavina Sarver, who I have as the wife of Erasco in the first report. But how does the name Lesson Hoffpauir, son of Erasco, fit in? And why is Erasco named Erasco if he is really the son of James G. Hoffpauir? Seems more likely he is a descendant of the second line, where there is an earlier "Erasco". Hopefully as we get more information this will all get sorted out. JohnR25442@aol.com wrote: > > Charlie: I am transcribing the obituary for Erasco J. 1. Erasco J. "Red" Hoffpauir: His obituary
    2. Charlie: I am transcribing the obituary for Erasco J. "Red" Hoffpauir from the Times-Picayune of May 1942: Ex-Editor, Paid Final Tribute (Special to the Times-Picayune) Abbeville, LA, May 30 --E. J. Hoffpauir, 65 years old, former editor of the Abbeville Meridional, died yesterday afternoon at his home following a long illness. Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Abbeville Methodist Church. Burial was in the Graceland cemetery here. Surviving Mr. Hoffpauir are his widow, nee May Beall of Alexandria [note: actually she was a patient at the mental hospital in Jackson, LA at this time and had been there for 20 years]; a son, Elrod [note: the son's name was actually "Elwood" not "Elrod"] Meaux Hoffpauir of California; two half-brothers, Claude Hoffpauir, pressman for the Daily Advertiser in Lafayette, and Lloyd Hoffpauir of Wadsworth, Kansas, and one half-sister, Mrs. Effie Lee of Port Neches, Tex. A native of Vermilion Parish, Mr. Hoffpauir was the son of the late James Hoffpauir and Mrs. Melinda Meaux Hoffpauir. He resided a few years in Indian Bayou, Vermilion Parish, and moved to Abbeville, where he was editor of the Ab beville Meridional for 14 years, succeeding the late Dr. C. J. Edwards. Mr. Hoffpauir studied for the ministry at one time. [note: I am hoping to learn more about his studies for the ministry since this line was omitted for his obituary in the Abbeville newspaper's article.] During his editorship he fought the Ku Klux Klan, encouraged cultural development in Vermilion parish and was an active supporter of semipro baseball teams in this area. Mr. Hoffpauir had been in declining health for eight years. In 1934 he was succeeded by Ralph Bienvenu of St. Martinville, who became news editor of the Meridional. floyd d. Edwards, owner of the Meridional, assumed the editorship and continued as publisher of the paper. [note: The Abbeville Meridional of June 1942 ran Erasco J. Hoffpauir's obituary with the added final sentence: The funeral arrangements were in charge of R. W. Bernard.] If anyone has further information about Erasco, or his family, please email me at JohnR25442@aol.com. Regards, Alma B. Reed

    3. Amy, That's an interesting possibility. I have information that Nelson F. Hoffpauir died in Yucaipa, CA (Barbara Hill) and that he is buried in Redlands Cemetery, Yucaipa, CA (Felton Morgan) and that he probably died before 11 Aug 1943 (because he is not mentioned as a survivor in his Father's obit)..... but I don't have a date of death for him. Does anyone have that date?
