Felton, I also have a problem with placing Austin Dailey's first wife as a child of George Hoffpauir. I have a son of his (George and Mary Ann) family as James Hoffpauir, born in abt 1858 and listed in the family in the 1860 census, but there is no mention of any other child by the name of Melinda Anne, or anything like that, at about that age. I notice that Roy Williams thinks that Austin's first wife was an older sister of Mary Eudora.... I also think that might be so but can find nothing substantual as proof. Roy, I have Aunt Ruth (who I only knew by the name Ruth also) listed with a possible first name of Margery.... that's the way she is in the book updated by Buddy Hoffpauir.... and her first child was named Margery Ruth Hoffpauir. I assume that she or another family member submitted it that way. I've never heard of Hazel either. My info differs slightly from yours. First that is the first time I have seen Austin with the initial "E" and the first time I have ever seen Aunt Ruth with the first name of Hazel. My mother, Vera Faulk Williams, knew all of her mothers brothers and sisters, having been born in 1918, she grew up knowing all of them. Their were only six children by Mary Eudora, and they were: Aaron, Avery, Isabelle (my grandmother), Ruth, Julia, and Iva. I have never heard of Pearl or Alma. I have a picture of all six taken in the early forties and when I find it I will post it on the internet. As for his first wife I differ in the spelling and her parents. Mother spelled it Malenion and had her as an older sister to Mary Eudora. Mother got much of her information from first hand experience and from one of Malenion's grandchildren, a Petry, which one I don't know at the moment. I remember one of "Samantha's" sons coming to one of our Austin Dailey reunions in St. Martinville, probably in the late 70's or early 80's. I think they called him Larry. Since I have been unable to prove that Malenion and Mary Eudora were sisters I can't be sure that Malenion is her real name nor that she was the daughter of Asa Hoffpauir and Johanna Perry. Either Melinda Anne or Malenion is another example of someone spelling as it sounds. The two names appear to be the same. Roy Williams

Thought you might be interested in this. Father Hebert's works have been a primary resource for Hoffpauir genealogy research. I know I spent hours digging through his volumes when I first caught the fever. He has made a great contribution to genealogy of those who families hale from the Southwest Louisiana area. Felton, Here it is: Marjorie Mae GRIFFIN b 30 Oct 1926 marr 21 Jun 1948 to Ernest Lee KING b 8 Apr 1926, d. 2 Mar 1968. They had Raymond Ernest KING b 8 Apr 1954. Marjorie also married Ernest Raymond YOUNG on 24 June 1971. Source for this info: Marjorie Mae Griffin - marriage and birth certs. in her possession. FYI: Ray Young is the nephew of the Reverand Albert GEORGE who was the husband of Susan Ruth HOFFPAUIR. They raised Marjorie after Mineola died. Sorry for the confusion about the last names of Margie's husbands. I had inadvertantly put KING for them both in my database. Margie is my aunt because she is the sister of my father, Kenneth Griffin, first son of Mineola Hoffpauir Griffin. Raymond Ernest King (s/o Margie) married 1)Jo Evelyn Cook in 1971; 2) Marilyn Sue Hodges in 1978 they had Jeremy Raymond KING b 30 Apr 1979; 3)Shirley Wallace on 31 Dec 1981 - source is Marjorie Young Sharon, grandaughter of Mineola Hoffpauir Griffin
I'm sorry I made an error. That marriage date was for Marjorie & Ernest Lee King not Young. I do not have a marriage date for her marriage to Ernest Raymond Young. And the child is also a King (I guess your father). Felton

Dear Hoffpauirs, This has nothing to do with the Hoffpauir clan, but I thought it was an interesting curiosity, and knew that you all would recognize the place names and maybe some of the surnames. The name "Gradenigo" rings a bell, and might have been the name of one of the witnesses on one of Thomas Hoffpauer's deeds. This story comes from a free online genealogy e-magazine that I get once a week. It's a great example of the kernel of truth that often lies behind a romantic family legend. I was asked to get the marriage date for my Aunt Margie and her husband Ray Young. I got a letter from her today and here it is: June 24, 1971. The officiating clergyman was Dr. Lathan Johnson, DD She also had this to say about Thomas: "Grandpa's great-great-grandpa came with some brothers -- who I don't know. They married French girls and came to America is what "Mother" Ruth told me." She also sent to me a newspaper from Lake Charles, dated Sun., Aug. 25, 1991, called the "Imperial Calcasieu". It is page 43 and nearly the entire page is a write up on the Hoffpauir clan. It has pictures of family members at the gathering for the 50th wedding anniversary of Eston Barney & Olive Hoffpauir in 1935; one of the Rev. Thomas H. Hoffpauir, son of Rev Able Hoffpauir; Louis Hoffpauir 1890-1921; Mrs. Dan Carpenter nee Florence Hoffpauir, Frank & Malissa Hoffpauir on the 50th anniversary, and the Indian Bayou Methodist Church. The article contains a lot of history. I would be willing to transcribe it to the list here if it's not already been done. I'm going to try and make photo copies of it and see how they come out. I'll also try scanning it into my computer. I don't hold out too much hope for good replicas of the photos. Regards, Sharon Dulcich
Hi Amy, thanks for the information. I posted the photo of the hotel in the Identification album at ecircles. However, the name on the hotel is Norrid. And Aunt said that my grandparents referred to it as the Couch Hotel. It is in Winnfield, LA. She thought that perhaps Hoffpauirs owned it? It might just be that my grandparents stayed there. Sandy I am only guessing, but you may me related to your husband also. Ruth's father married twice. His first wife was Malenion Hoffpauir, and they had 3 girls. Samantha being the youngest, I think. She married Ernest Clinton Petry in the earlier part of the century prior to 1910. they had 3 boys and 5 girls. Austin Dailey then married Malenion's younger sister, Mary Eudora Hoffpauir and they had 6 children, Ruth being the last sibling of the six. I am the grand son of Ruth's older sister, Isabelle. Hope this helps. Roy T. Williams
