    3. As a followup to my previous note, I did find an Emily Hoffpauir and a Felicie Hoffpauir in the Social Security Death Index, both last living in Scott. However, Emily died in 1987 and Felicie in 1993, opposite of what should be if Felicie was the first wife, as stated in the obit. Of course, it could just be a mistake in the obit. 3. Bonnie, I saw the same obit, and I can't find any of the brothers or the children of this Lawrence Hoffpauir in my database. Nor can I positively identify anyone as the Noah Hoffpauir (his father) mentioned in the obit. I wonder if his father's name might have been Manoah, and the family called him Noah? Hopefully Felton will have the marriage records of Lawrence, so we can possibley determine his parents and the surnames of his two wives. 3. Leger Community Cemetery, 5 miles south of Rayne, is at center of this shot. This is the site of the "Hoffpauir Burying Grounds" cited in Rosemary's book. I base that on the stone I found for Octavia McClelland Hoffpauer, wife of Manasseh, in the woods behind the present cemetery...Rosemary records that Manasseh was burying in the "Hoffpauir Burying Grounds." http://terraserver.com/image.asp?S=11&T=100&X=261&Y=103&Z=265&W=2

    2. Gene O'Quinn
    3. To all Hoffpauir Researchers; There is an abandoned railway that crosses Bayou Hoffpower just west of Evergreen, LA. My first inclination was to assume the name as Lloyds for the bridge. But in The Official Military Atlas of the Civil War published by The US Army Military History Institute, West Point, NY, Gramercy Books [5th printing]1983, Plate LII contains one of the maps of the Red River Campaign under Major General N. P. Banks. The map is titled the "Valley of the Red River, LA from Mississippi River to Shreveport" and was drawn by Col. John S. Clark in the spring of 1864. A road is indicated from northeast of Evergreen passing Borodino Post Office and crossing Bayou Hoffpower twice on the northwestwardly route to Cheneyville. There is no railroad or a Lloyd's bridge indicated on the map.

    3. Followup.... I just checked the online yellow pages, and there is no Redlands cemetery, but ther is a Hillside Cemetery in Redlands, and that's where one of Nelson's children is buried. 3. Sharon, I have in my notes the following information, which probably isn't any help, but I'll mention it anyway... Neslon was Methodist minister Nelson was not mentioned as a survivor in the obituary of his father, who died in 1943 Nelson was buried in Yucaipa, CA (mentioned by Barbara hill and Felton Morgan) >From this information, I conclude that he died fairly young, probably while still an active minister, and was returned to his "home" of Yucaipa, CA for the burial. If one were to contact the Methodist church perhaps they would have records of their ministers, and be able to tell you where he was serving when he died. (That is, if my assumptions are correct) Other than that, maybe there is someone that can check with the cemetery and find out when he was buried. That would at least give a bit more information. If you click the down arrow at the bottom of the page [about three frames] you can reach Indian Bayou, Ebenezer, Bayou Que de Tortue and an undidentified cemetery. Also as you scroll around, zoom in and out and look at topography and satellite photos you will see the community of Higginbotham. Have fun, Gene

    3. According to Rosemary Hoffpauir's book: "Apparently, Thomas Hoffpauir was honored by having a small strem of water named for him. (See Opelousas U.S. Land Office Archives, Volume 1, Part1, Page 63). Dated 13th July 1820: Signed Robert Taylor, agent of Bertanney, 2400 arpents, which 30 arpents front on Bayou Hoffpauir. This claim and title a request in 14 July 1820. Have gone through chips list gathering these and their entry points to US and where they seem to wind up--many were after Thomas and are found in Ohio, Kentucky, and many in Iowa. Am also working from the other side too. Have made a list of Hoffpauer/Hofpauers in France in general and also in Alcase Lorrain. Lists in Germany and Austria are endless, but I am focusing around German area near Alsace and Lorraine. Cantons in Switzerland also have show these names. I hope to send letters to the Hoffbauer names I have found in Alsace and will keep you posted. Found two HOffbauer artists from France. and also a famous painter who paintings are in many galleries in the US....his name CHARLES HOFFBAUER. The older artist is an F.
