    3. Funeral notice for Ethel I. Hoffpauir, daughter of Francois/Francis ("Frank") Hoffpauir and Melissa Hoffpauir: Orange County Register (Santa Ana, Calif.), Tuesday, September 25, 1973, page D3: ETHEL W. HUGHES Hughes, Ethel W., 84, of 12903 Newport Ave., Tustin, passed away Sept. 23, 1973. Survived by son Clarence Wiggs, Tustin. 3 sisters Mrs. Irene McKinney, Mrs. Ruth Donaldson, & Mrs. Dolly Nayo, [sic] all from Louisiana, brother, Sam Hoffpauir, Fair Oaks, Calif., 3 grandchildren. Service time Thurs., Sept.27, 11 a.m. to be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Tustin. Officiant Father Richard D. Thompson. Interment Fairhaven Memorial Park. Directed by Saddleback Chapel, Tustin. (Notes: I believe the use of W. for her middle initial may be a remnant of her first husband's name, Wiggs. Of her sisters' names, Nayo is an error for Mayo; I think Donaldson is also an error.) I hope several researchers will be keeping track of this branch of the family in order to assist with inquiries in the distant future from descendants who are as yet unknown. Barbara Hill

    1. Family of Francois Hoffpauir
    2. Charlie
    3. There were several posts recently on the family of Francois (Frank) and Melissa Hoffpauir. I collected all of the information that was available at this time, and assembled it into one file. Unfortunately, the mail list won't accept attachments of any kind, so I can't post this information to the entire list. I did e-mail it to several people, and one of them suggested that we really should try to make this available to everyone on the mail list. Well if you're interested in this family, here is how to get the file. Click on the address given here: http://users.ev1.net/~charlieh/francois.rtf With the RIGHT mouse key and then select the option of "Save Link As" (This is the wording in Netscape, it may be slightly different in your mail system) give the file a name and point to a convenient location to save it in. The file is of type RTF (Rich Text Format) which preserves much of the formatting to make the file easier to read. It can be opened by virtually any word processor, and then either read from the screen or printed out for convenient reading later. -- Charlie Hoffpauir Yes, there is a HOFFPAUIR mail list, hosted by ROOTSWEB http://web.wt.net/~charlieh/ http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/h/o/f/Charles-R-Hoffpauir/ http://www.parsonstech.com/genealogy/trees/choffpauo/thomas.htm

    1. Hamilton Hoffpauir
    2. Barbara Hill
    3. I think I now have dates for Hamilton Hoffpauir, son of Nelson, who was said to have died in San Pedro, Calif. in 1995. Instead of using the SSDI CD-ROMs that came with my Family Tree Maker, I went to the SSDI at the Ancestry.com website, and asked for all Hoffpauirs who died in California. There was an "F. Hoffpauir" who died 4 November 1994 in San Pedro (or at least that was his last residence). He was born 19 January 1907. The initial "F." matches the middle initial that Felton Morgan had for Hamilton. There may be a widow yet living. One of the online phone directories has a listing for F.H. Hoffpauir [for F. Hamilton?] at 861 W. 22nd., San Pedro, CA 90731. The SSDI had 17 persons named Hoffpauir associated with California. I knew who 4 of them were. If there is interest, I can probably get obituaries for some of the rest, though not all of them. The ones from Los Angeles County, for example, probably won't show up in the Los Angeles Times because the L.A. Times covers only a small fraction of funerals and obituaries in that county; and I don't have access to any other newspaper from that county. Barbara Hill <bhill@uclink4.berkeley.edu>

    1. Response for little known HOFFPAUIR branch
    2. linda schafbuch
    3. Hi List, This branch is my family and I have sent Charlie some of the information updates for his book on net. My Grandfather was Manoah Arnon Hoffpauir and Felton's list of Manoah and Irene Hammett's children is correct except that both Manoah and his first son Manoah have the middle name Arnon, not Amon. My mother was Dolores. She died in El Paso as did my Aunt Catherine. The only surviving child of Manoah is my Aunt Dixie. I have been gathering further information from her. As well, I am doing much research for details of their lives as children around 1900. Just wrote Barbara and will be sending her information. If anyone else would like information on this line, please feel free to email me. Linda

    1. Little-known Hoffpauir branch?
    2. Barbara Hill
    3. Dear Hoffpauirs, I have some information on a Hoffpauir branch that I think is barely mentioned in the 3 existing Hoffpauir genealogies. I'd like to contribute what I have compiled, and ask for additions and corrections. DESCENDANTS OF FRANCIS (FRANCOIS) HOFFPAUIR AND MELISSA HOFFPAUIR Francis (or Francois) Hoffpauir was the son of Manoah Hoffpauir, who was the son of Manoah Francois Hoffpauir, who was the son of Thomas Hoffpauir, the immigrant. [Hope this is correct] Francis Hoffpauir was born 17 March 1855 in Bayou Queue de Tortue, Louisiana, and died 11 August 1943. [where?] He married Melissa Hoffpauir in September 1876 at Indian Bayou. [do the church records give a day?] She was the daughter of Nathan Hoffpauir and Lucinda Spell. Children: 1. Nelson F. Hoffpauir, born July 1877, Ward 3, Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana. Died before 11 August 1944. Said to be buried in "Redlands Cemetery, Yucaipa County, California." [This can't be correct. Redlands and Yucaipa are both cities in San Bernardino County, Calif.; there is no such county as Yucaipa. I suspect he is buried in some cemetery in the town of Yucaipa.] He married Bonnie L. Andrus on 19 August 1900 in Acadia Parish, Louisiana. notes: I was told that he was a Methodist "preacher" and was married twice; first wife unknown, Bonnie was second wife, but I'm not sure this makes sense considering his age in 1900. He was said to have had a son Hamilton Hoffpauir who died in 1995 in San Pedro, Calif.; I could not find Hamilton in the SSDI but he may have been going by his middle name. There was supposedly also a daughter named "Eris." 2. Laura Emma Hoffpauir, born January 1879, Louisiana. All I have on her is her listing in the 1900 census with parents and siblings. She may be the "Emma" I was told about who married a BURKE, and had a daughter named Mary Temple who never had any children. I don't know where this family lived. 3. Manoah Arnon Hoffpauir, born 21 July 1882 in Louisiana, died January 1970 in El Paso, El Paso County, Texas. [birth date is from the 1900 census, death date is from the SSDI; I matched him on the birthdate. No other information, but if anyone has access to El Paso newspapers and could find an obituary for him, and could post it to this list, we might be able to track descendants.] 4. Alex Marvin Hoffpauir, born 23 February 1884, Louisiana; died October 1863, Louisiana. I don't recall where I got this information and have nothing further, except that he seems to have gone by "Marvin." 5. Mineola Hoffpauir, born June 1886, Louisiana. [date from 1900 census] No further information except that she was called "Minnie," and may have had a daughter named Margie who was raised by Minnie's sister Ruth, no. 9 below. 6. Elsie Irene Hoffpauir, born January 1888, Louisiana. [date from 1900 census] No further info except that she went by Irene. 7. Ethel I. Hoffpauir, born July 1889, Louisiana. [date from 1900 census] No further info. 8. Samuel Rufus Hoffpauir, born 29 October 1891, Rayne, Acadia Parish, Louisiana. Died 15 May 1981 in Carmichael, Sacramento County, Calif. Married Gertrude Marie DAMKIER on 1 September 1912 [probably in Fresno, Calif.]. He hated his first and middle names and used either his initials only ("S.R.") formally, or informally went by "Roy Hoffpauir." Further details about his children and grandchildren in another post. 9. Susan Ruth Hoffpauir (twin to Samuel Rufus), born 29 October 1891, Rayne, Acadia Parish, Louisiana. She married Albert GEORGE on 1 November 1912 [where?], and died September 1985 in Hattiesburg, Forrest County, Mississippi. [death date and place from SSDI] She went by "Ruth" and I believe her husband was a Methodist minister. She wrote a book of religious and inspirational poems entitled "Walking on the Glory Road" which I used to have a copy of, but gave away to another Hoffpauir descendant. Her children were Don George, Susan, and Margaret. Don George apparently still lives in Hattiesburg, Miss. I don't know if he has ever attended a Hoffpauir reunion or not. 10. Lucinda Beulah [or Beulah Lucinda?] Hoffpauir, born 13 August 1893, Louisiana; died April 1980, Lake Charles, Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana. [death date from SSDI] She married Claudius Herman MAYO on 7 October 1914 [where?]. She went by the nickname "Dolly." Children of Dolly Hoffpauir and C. H. Mayo: Emmalissa Mayo, married John McFillen Minnie Ruth Mayo, married Luther Sayes Claudius Mayo, born 25 October 1915; died 25 June 1994, Lake Charles, LA Herman Mayo, died before 1988 Helen Mayo, married Elvin DAIGLE Seaman Mayo [no information] Helen (Mayo) Daigle lives (or used to live) in Palo Alto, California. I met her many years ago and know that she has a daughter. I've heard that she visits Louisiana fairly frequently and calls it "home" so she may have attended Hoffpauir reunions. Additional information on Francis and Melissa Hoffpauir's family: I was told that in 1897 they moved to the vicinity of Shreveport. They spoke French in the home and first learned English in school. At some point they moved to California for a while; Ruth Hoffpauir's poems speak of attending high school in California and being homesick for Louisiana. I believe Francis and Melissa returned to Louisiana before Ruth finished high school, but S.R. "Roy" Hoffpauir and probably Nelson (and possibly others) remained and settled in California or elsewhere. If anybody has any information to supplement this, I'd be curious to know. The 1900 census enumeration I have referred to can be found in Bossier Parish, Ward 5, Supv. District 4, Enumeration District 22, Page nos. 191 A-B, Dwelling/Family no. 55. The date of enumeration was 8 June 1900. Francis Hoffpauir was a farmer, owned his home or farm free of mortgage, and he and Melissa had been married 23 years. All of the children from Nelson to Ethel had been at school that year, except for Alex M., who was listed as a farm laborer. Everyone in the family could read, write, and speak English except the 3 youngest children, who weren't listed as being in school. Nelson, the oldest at 22, had been at school for 9 months that year, longer than any of his siblings, so I wonder if he was in college. Manoah A. at 17 had been to school only 3 months that year, and probably was working the farm the rest of the year. The rest of the school-age children had been at school for 6 months. If any subscriber to this list is a descendant of this family, please help me to fill in the many remaining blanks. Barbara Hill <bhill@uclink4.berkeley.edu>

    1. Re: Hoffpauir reunion
    2. Janie Yes you are invited to attend the Hoffpauir Reunion. It is Labor Day beginning at 10 am in the Indian Bayou Methodist Church (were your relatives attended). The old church where your ancestors attended was near the cemetary but burned about the time the "new" one was built. We are going to make this reunion more geared towards genealogy. A am on the board of directors & am going to have my computer there to answer questions. There is no cost for the reunion. However the Indian Bayou Methodist Church conducts a fund raising project by selling chicken lunches & sandwiches. Also to all concerned, I have been asked to help conduct the memorial service this year. This includes reading the names of all Hoffpauir descendents who have passed away since the last reunion a year ago. Please email me the names of those Hoffpauir descendents that you know have passed away since last Labor Day so that I may include them. Felton

    3. Whendi, There is one in Alvin, where I live. The main thing it has going for it is that it is close.... 5 minutes away. The Claytone Genealogical Library in Houston is 45 minutes away. The only disadvantage for me is that the Alvin office is very small, and so is only open a few hours a week. It is possible to access some records through them that you can't find anywhere else, though, by using their Microfilm.... they will borrow the film from the Salt Lake center for you, and let you view it in their local facility. Now, with the new web site they have opened, it's possible to locate the information you meed right from homw,,, then go to the local Family History Center and order the film, then return to the FHC to view it when it comes in. Pretty good deal. Whendi Wainwright wrote: > > I recently found out there is a Latter-Day Saints Family History Center in my town. Has anyone used these facilities? 3. This may have already been addressed, but I am new to the group- has anything ever been found about Thomas Hoffpauir before his immigration? I have had no immediate trouble researching the family of Marie Charlotte Perrilard. Does anyone know what ship or port he arrived on or at least what year(at one time I heard 1754)? 1. Re: Next question...
    2. Charlie
    3. Barbara, Where did you find Anne Savoie's birthdate given? I corresponded with Mark Savoy (presumably one of the Savoie descendants), and he told me that her birthdate was Abt. 1767. I have never been able to verify that, however. There is no evidence that these are ancestors of the entire Hoffpauir line. Rather, they are the ancestors of just a small portion of the Hoffpauir family.... fortunately (for me) that is part of my line. I can supply a bit more about the Benoit/Savoie connection, but since it is not of interest to the entire mail list, it would probably be better if we corresponded directly. I'm working right now on part of this line..... Jean Charles' Mother. I'm beginning to believe that the parents I have listed for her are incorrect, and I'm searching for more clues. BTW, I have a photocopy of the Rosemary Hoffpauir book, that I bought at a small library in Wallisville, TX. They had an original and a photocopy, bound in an Acco binder, and they were willing to sell the copy. Barbara Hill wrote: > > Wow! 3. Wow! Charlie was so helpful with my first question (about the two Edward Foremans) that I am emboldened to go on to the next one: I have a Jean Charles BENOIT, born 1756, who married Anne SAVOIE on 7 September 1785. Her birthdate was given as 25 April 1773 - is this an error, or did she really get married at the age of 12? Or did I put in one of the dates wrong? Is it even verifiable that these are Hoffpauir ancestors through a distaff side? The information I've gathered comes partly from two Hoffpauir genealogies, but not from Rosemary Hoffpauir's book because I have not been able to get ahold of a copy of it, even to look at. Was her information more complete and accurate? Thanks for any help. Barbara Hill <bhill@uclink4.berkeley.edu>

    1. One Edward Foreman or two?
    2. Barbara Hill
    3. Dear Hoffpauirs, I recently ran an error check on my data base and came up with some questions for y'all. The first one is: Was the EDWARD FOREMAN who married Marie Boseman and had a son named Ephraim Foreman about 1775 - the SAME Edward Foreman who married Anne Perry and had a daughter, Julia Ann Foreman, about 1789? Or were there two Edwards? Does any one have his/their dates so my program will stop coughing it up as a potential duplicate individual? I'll do the other 2 questions later. Thanks!
