The Pittsylvania and Henry County, Virginia, Records Although they may have no meaningin this context, I think it is worthwhile to review the records of Pittsylvania and Henry County relating to William and John Hodges (there is no Thomas). Until 1767, Pittsylvania was part of Halifax County. In 1776, Henry County was split off from Pittsylvania, and in 1785, Franklin County was formed from part of Henry. The Chestnut Creek area of Franklin County, home to large number of Hodges, was in Halifax until 1767, in Pittsylvania until 1776, and in Henry until 1785. About 1774, Edmund Hodges and his sons from Goochland County settled in the Bearskin Creek area of Pittsylvania County just west of Chatham. Here are the records of the Williams and Johns of these areas up through the 1770's. Mar 18, 1762 /Tranf.d to Jno. May 1773 On the information of James Mauran and Hugh Armstrong against William Terry, Augustine Choat, James Daniel, Gideon Rucker and John Hodges and for reasons appearing to the Court it is Ordered that the Sheriff forthwith take them into custody and them safely keep until they shall find sufficient securities for their good behavior. John and Isham Hodges acknowledge their debts of 10 pounds and 5 pounds respectively to the King to be levied on their respective goods and chattels, lands and tenements, with condition that the said John Hodges be of good behavior and keep the peace towards all of his said Majesty's liege people, and especially James Maurer and Hugh Armstrong, one whole year and a day.
