    1. [HODGES-L] Another William Hodges No. 2 - Register Reports Generations 1-3
    2. Jimmy Rosamond
    3. Here is the Register Report I mentioned directly out of my database in Family Tree Maker. I apologize for some of the repeated information from the previous email. I'd be interested to know anything else about this family, in particular the ancestry of William and Elizabeth Barmore Hodges. ------------------------------------------ Descendants of William Hodges of Abbeville, SC Generation No. 1 1. WILLIAM1 HODGES1 was born Abt. 1762 in Essex County, Virginia, and died Abt. 1845 in South Carolina. He married (1) ELIZABETH BARMORE 1783 in Ninety-Six District, South Carolina2. She died Abt. 1800 in South Carolina. He married (2) M. FRANCES LONG Abt. 1805 in South Carolina. Notes for WILLIAM HODGES: This William Hodges is listed as the father of a James L. Hodges, b. 5/12/1789, in a Family Group Sheet prepared by Rose-Marie Williams in 1992, and in "The Hodges Family" compiled and edited by Hazel Jan Hodges Parsons. (This appears to be a different James L. Hodges than the one who married Nancy Ware) The sources are based on independent research of the individual authors. In her book, Hazel Parsons gives the birth date of James L. Hodges as 1787, while the 1860 census lists him as being 59 years of age, thus born in 1791. This is borne out by the fact that the 1790 census of the Abbeville District of South Carolina shows only one William Hodges, and only one other person is in his household, presumably his wife. Therefore, this James L. Hodges could not have been born until after 1790. The names and birth dates of the other children of William and Elizabeth Hodges come from the Family Group sheet from Rose-Marie Williams, and the book "The Hodges Family" by Hazel Jan Hodges Parsons. Again, these two independent sources are in agreement. In her book, Hazel Parsons states, "From Virginia we have a record of William Hodges, who was born about 1767 and his wife, Elizabeth, moving to South Carolina..." Since Elizabeth is not identified by her maiden name, it appears that Ms. Parsons was not aware of the maiden name of William Hodges wife Elizabeth. I have located two separate records that indicate she was Elizabeth Barmore. The first is a marriage record from "Old 96 and Abbeville Districts, South Carolina, Marriages 1774 - 1890" complied by Paul R. Sarrett, Jr. and posted in the USGenWeb Archives for Abbeville County, SC. This record shows William Hodges married Elizabeth Barmore Hill in 1883. The second reference is the will of John Hill, Sr. and a paper filed in a court case some years after his death by his granddaughter Nancy Hill Richey. In the document, "Estate of John Hill Senior, Pack 3375, Bill for Account, Clerk of Courts Office, Abbeville, SC", it quotes the will of John Hill Senior and references one of his sons, Samuel Hill as follows: "Samuel Hill, now dead, who left as his only heirs and distributees a widow Elizabeth who has since intermarried with Wiliam Hodges, and two children, to wit, Nancy your oratrix who has intermarried with your orator Robert C. Richey, and Elvira who has since died unmarried and quite young. Administration of Samuel Hill's estate was granted to William Barmore." This Hill family has many ties to the Rosamonds in Abbeville, as John Hill's daughter Susannah Hill was the first wife of Benjamin Rosamond, and his daughter Frances "Fanny" Hill was the wife of Samuel Rosamond, brother of Benjamin Rosamond. Benjamin Rosamond was the grandfather of Sarah Frances Rosamond who later married the Rev. William Henry Hodges, a grandson of this William and Elizabeth Hodges. In 1826, the Walnut Grove Baptist Church was founded near Hodges, SC and Ware Shoals, SC. The founding fathers (and mothers) of this church contained members of the Hill family including Samuel Hill, the Rosamond family (Benjamin and Susannah Hill Rosamond), and a William Hodges and James Hodges. I believe the William Hodges in this record is the William Hodges, Sr., who along with Benjamin Rosamond, was a charter member of the Walnut Grove Baptist Church, founded 24 June 1826. As with Benjamin Rosamond, he is mentioned at least twice in the church minutes which are contained in Volume 2 of "Greenwood Historical Society Scrapbooks" and reprinted in the series of newspaper articles "Our Old Roads" by Harry L. Watson. The following are taken from those articles. ---------- From "Our Old Roads" -------------- No. 101, Year referenced in text 1826. Newspaper article 6 November 1943. (Regarding the Walnut Grove Baptist Church) "The original minute book begins with this entry: A Record of the proceedings of the Baptist Church of Christ at the Walnut Grove on Mulberry Creek in Abbeville District, S. C., constituted on the 24th day of June 1826 by the Rev'd Arthur Williams and Chesley Davis, both of the district aforesaid and the Rev'd Moses Holland, of Pendleton District." The names of the members constituted are as follows: Samuel Hill Nancy Hodges Richard Gaines Mary Youngblood William Graham Peggy Henderson Valentine Young Dicey Sharp Thompson Hodges Jincy Gaines Benjamin Rosemond Susanna Roseman Robert Gaines Francis Roseman William Hodges Jane Huskerson James Hodges Tabitha Hodges It will be noticed the names of the male members are in the first column and the names of the female members are in the second column. And that was the way the members in all the churches sat in the early days and even within the recollection of people of middle age and better today, the men on one side, usually the right side after entrance, and the females on the left side after entrance. No. 1666, Date referenced in text, January 1834. In January of 1834, William Hodges, Sr., a charter member died. The record made in June ... the highly esteemed man died "sometime in January last." He was the father of William Hodges, Jr. and others and his home was near the church. Many older residents remember William Hodges, Jr., one describing him as a "very tall, erect old man who wore a beaver." He was 70 years old when he died. ------------------------------------------ Notes for ELIZABETH BARMORE: >From "Equity Records of Old 96 and Abbeville District, SC" Samuel Hill, now dead, who left as his only heirs and distributees a widow Elizabeth, who has since intermarried with William Hodges, and two children to wit, Nancy your oratrix who has intermarried with your orator Robert C. Richey, and Elvira who has since died unmarried and quite young. Administration of Samuel Hill's estate was granted to William Barmore. Squire William Barmore was probably the father of Elizabeth Barmore Hill Hodges. HODGES: Livng with the family of James M. and Martha ? Hodges in 1860. Based on 1860 Choctaw County, MS census. Benjamin F. was 28 years old, as was the James M. Hodges he was living with. Since his brother James was born earlier (prob 1824) this James M. probably isn't his brother. I would guess a cousin - but that is pure speculation. xi. MARTHA HODGES, b. Abt. 1842, Mississippi. Notes for MARTHA HODGES: in 1860 living with Sarah S. Simpson and her children. Household 295/284 of the 1860 Choctaw County, MS census, page 232. 3. MARSHALL2 HODGES (WILLIAM1) was born November 23, 1798. He married ? CULBERTSON. Child of MARSHALL HODGES and ? CULBERTSON is: 7. i. ENOCH CHARLES3 HODGES. Generation No. 3 4. THOMAS H.3 HODGES (JAMES L.2, WILLIAM1) was born Abt. 1818 in South Carolina, and died Abt. 1884 in Montgomery County, Mississippi. He married MALINDA B. ?. She was born 1825 in Tennessee. Notes for THOMAS H. HODGES: This Thomas Hodges has been identified with Thomas, son of James L. Hodges and Sarah Cummings based on a reasonable, but unproven assumption. In the 1860 census of Choctaw County, MS there are three Hodges households at consecutive dwellings numbered 617, 618 and 619. At dwelling/household 617 is W. H. Hodges and Sarah F. Hodges and their children James, Thomas H., John F., William A., Benjamin F. and Marshall L. Hodges. Also living with this family is Walter A. Hodges. This is known from other research to be the Reverend William Henry Hodges and his wife Sarah Frances Rosamond. In 1860 William Henry Hodges is 37 and was born in SC. At dwelling/household 618 is J.M. Hodges, his wife Rebecca and their children Frances, Mary, Carroll and Cornelius. J. M. Hodges is 36, and was born in SC. At dwelling/household 619 is Thomas H. Hodges and second wife Malinda B. (Crowder by 1st marriage). With them are four children born to Thomas H. Hodges and his first wife Maryann ??, these being Sarah "Saliner", James, Martha and Benjamin. They also have three children of Malinda B. Crowder by her first marriage living with them, these being Sarah M.T.J. Crowder, Martin L. Crowder and Isaac W. Crowder. Thomas H. Hodges is 42 and was born in SC. >From other research it is known that the Rev. William Henry Hodges had brothers named James and Thomas. With the proximity of these three households, and knowing that the brothers moved from SC to Mississippi with their parents ca. 1830, it seems to be a reasonably safe assumption, though unproven as of December 2000, that the Hodges listed above are brothers and sons of James L. Hodges and his wife Sarah Cummings. Children of THOMAS HODGES and Maryann ? are: 8. i. SARAH JANE (SALINER)4 HODGES, b. Abt. 1846, Choctaw County, Mississippi; d. Abt. 1884, Montgomery County, Mississippi. ii. JAMES HODGES, b. Abt. 1847. iii. MARTHA HODGES, b. Abt. 1850. iv. BENJAMIN HODGES, b. Abt. 1853. 5. WILLIAM HENRY3 HODGES (JAMES L.2, WILLIAM1) was born March 22, 1822 in South Carolina, and died 1892. He married SARAH FRANCES L. ROSAMOND in Choctaw Co., Mississippi, daughter of SAMUEL ROSAMOND and FRANCES HILL. She was born 1827 in South Carolina, and died 1905. Notes for WILLIAM HENRY HODGES: Came to Mississippi with his parents in 1830. He became a Baptist Minister in 1863 in Choctaw County, Mississippi. He moved to White County, Arkansas in 1869. He married Sarah Frances Roseman, daughter of Samuel Roseman and Francis Hill Roseman. More About WILLIAM HODGES and SARAH ROSAMOND: Marriage: Choctaw Co., Mississippi Children of WILLIAM HODGES and SARAH ROSAMOND are: 9. i. JAMES SAMUEL4 HODGES, b. Abt. 1845, Mississippi; d. 1914, Arkansas. ii. CASSANDRA E. HODGES, b. Abt. 1847. Notes for CASSANDRA E. HODGES: Cassandra is mentioned in "The Hodges Book" but is not shown on the 1860 Choctaw County, MS census. I would presume she may have died as a child sometime between 1849 and 1860. iii. THOMAS H. HODGES, b. Abt. 1851. iv. JOHN F. HODGES, b. Abt. 1853. v. WILLIAM A. HODGES, b. Abt. 1855. vi. BENJAMIN F. HODGES, b. Abt. 1857. vii. MARSHALL L. HODGES, b. Abt. 1859. viii. ARCHIE E. HODGES, b. Aft. 1860. ix. EMMETT L. HODGES, b. Aft. 1860. x. JOSEPH T. HODGES, b. Aft. 1860. xi. SARAH F. HODGES, b. Aft. 1860. 6. JAMES3 HODGES (JAMES L.2, WILLIAM1) was born Abt. 1830 in South Carolina.
