Hello Cousin Jimmy, Your William Hodges from the three letters you posted is the self same William, possibly Brooks, Hodges is the brother of my Richard. Your information is correct on William born in Essex County Virginia about 1764, moved with family to 96th District, later the Abbeville Dist, SC. They lived close to Walnut Creek just north of where Hodges, SC now stands. The people of Hodges know very little about the family. I'll go into that in a different letter. William married Frances Long, also known as Franky, they married in the neighborhood of Hodges, SC. My records show Greenwood, but when they married it was still Abbeville Dist, SC I think. William died age 70 in SC. You asked about his family. His father was Richard Hodges and his mother Was Elizabeth Jones. They married in the Essex County, VA area and began their family there. It is unknown just how many children they had. I believe that two families were lumped together in some of the books there were written. I believe that Richard had a brother John who went to South Carolina and lived on the next farm over. John has been very hard to find in the records, the only reference is a land grant sent to me by Al Metts who used to post here often. You will find much information in the Archives from Al Metts. Al writes that the first record of Richard Hodges is when he had an important meeting with a man named Richard Jones. Richard Jones had in his lifetime made a general promise that he would give fifty pounds to his daughter, Elizabeth, if she married with his liking. She married the said Richard Hodges, who was of her father's liking. On 1 January 1741 (Order Book 24:39) Well, the lawyer-talk is documented to tell that Father Jones did not come up with the 50 Pounds! Instead, he agreed to leave lovely Elizabeth an equal share of his estate when he died. Like every mortal, Richard Jones died between 1755(w) and 1757(p). A long will named many of our Jones cousins: - Richard Jones' sons John, Benjamin, Richard, Adam and a couple of grandsons - all boys! Conspicuous by her omission was Betty (Elizabeth) Hodges! Betty and Richard took the estate and deceased Richard Jones to court. Justice was done at last. On 20 Jun 1763, after 7 years, the court found for Betty and gave her 50 pounds. They charged Richard 770 pounds of tobacco to pay expenses for three witnesses. There are other records about Richard in VA. There were records until 24 November 1768, after which Richard and his family vanish from the records in VA. I'm sure that Richard Hodges is the father of Richard Hodges my ancestor. My Richard Hodges married Sarah F. Rosemond in Abbeville Dist, SC after serving in the Revolutionary War with her father James Rosemond who died in November 1769. They moved to Tennessee, then Kentucky and settled in Ripley County, Indiana where both are buried. The whole family from my Richard is; Richard Hodges Jr. born 1756 Essex Co, VA and died 17 Jan 1824 in Ripley Co, IN. James L. Hodges born 1763 Essex Co, VA and died 06 Aug 1823 now Hodges, SC. The grave is on the property of a Go-Kart track where most of the stones have been damaged by drunken vandals. I have photos. James L. Hodges married Nancy Ware Abbeville Dist, SC Jan 1786 they were married by Baptist Minister Joseph Redding. John Hodges born Essex Co, VA 1764 died Abbeville Dist, SC 24 Dec 1834. Married twice, 20 children most by Frances Anderson. Sarah Hodges born Essex Co, VA B date unknown, died 24 Apr 1844 married second husband Samuel Rosemond whose father was James Rosemond and died Abbeville Dist, SC ca Nov 1796. They had 9 children, Elizabeth, Margaret, Sarah, Lucinda, Jane, Addison, Richard, James, and Mary Clark Rosemond. Charles Hodges born Essex Co, VA 1768/70 married Sarah (possibly Rosemond) and had at least William Hodges... William (Brookes) Hodges born Essex Co, VA 1771died SC 1830, married Frances Long, their children; William Hodges Jr, George Washington Hodges, Marshall W. Hodges and 7 others. Samuel Hodges Dorothy Hodges probably two or three others names unknown. Differing records give Richard and Elizabeth Jones Hodges up to thirteen children. We have found, and believe to be true a short History that says that Richard was killed by indians before the RW. So I don't believe there would have been children after 1775, but like I said there was more than one family. I suspect that some, or several of the last children attributed to Richard and Elizabeth were the children of John Hodges. The problem is there is a terrible lack of records from the time period. I have a pedigree chart for Elizabeth's family if you are interested. I also strongly suspect that William Brookes Hodges was named after an ancestress. Anyone able to connect the Hodges family to the Brookes family around 1720-30? Hello Cousin Elijah. Thanks tremendously for the info you sent. I'm going to have to digest some of this before I can answer intelligently. But, one thing struck me in your first email regarding Richard Hodges and his wife Sarah F. Rosamond. Sarah's father's name was John and not James. James was her brother, who is my ggg-grandfather. This has been pretty much proven by a number of cousins independently, as well as a local SC independent researcher not connected to the family. The makeup of this family, which ties to the Hodges at least twice and maybe three times, is shown below. John Roseman (spelling from records of Augusta County, VA) and wife Sarah Willson Roseman. They moved from Augusta County, VA to Abbeville District, SC around 1766. There is a record of them selling their land on Moffett Creek in VA in late 1765. I have a land deed where John obtained land in Abbeville Dist, SC in 1767 on Turkey Creek, just outside of Ware Shoals. This couple had five children: Margaret Rosamond who married Bartholomew Weems Sarah F. Rosamond who married Richard Hodges, the family that later moved to Ripley County, Indiana Jean Rosamond (female, who never married) Samuel Rosamond, who married Sarah Hodges, sister of Richard Hodges above James Rosamond, who married 1st. --- BIG QUESTION --- married 2nd Mary Doherty (as spelled in James' will dated 1806 - her previously married name) widow of James Daugherty. One of the leading contenders for being James' wife is Dorothy Hodges, the one who was captured by the Indians and later returned to live with her family. She is supposed to be the sister of Richard Hodges and Sarah Hodges listed above. The other most likely scenario is that she was a Jones, probably related to the Benjamin Jones family who lived on the next farm over from John and Sarah Rosemond. One of James' sons was named Nathaniel Jones Rosamond sort of hinting that maybe his mother's maiden name was Jones. Now my question. You show Sarah F. Rosemond's father died in November 1769. Can you tell me where this date came from? My cousins and I have been looking for a record of his death for years with no success. I have to question the date because both John and his son Samuel are shown in an early colonial census of the Old 96 District in 1779. We're pretty sure John is not alive in 1790 because Sarah is listed as the head of the household, with one unmarried female living with her. This would place his death between 1779 and 1790. Oh, the name is misspelled again on this early census. It's shown as Rosemand. BTW, for anyone interested in the Rosamond name by any of the various spellings, I encourage you to join the Rosamond-L list.
