    3. The will was filed in Beaufort County, in Anson County, and in Charleston. If I am not mistaken, South Carolina did not have a provision for probate of wills at the county level so all wills were filed in the capital. I think that Richard probably resided in Beaufort, but owned land in the Marlboro area. Because the border between North and South Carolina was uncertain then, his executors took the precaution of filing both in South Carolina and in Anson County, North Carolina. As nearly as I can tell, the Hodges family to which Richard belonged, which traces back to Isle of Wight County, Virginia, is entirely different from the other Hodges family found in Marlboro County, SC, which goes back to Cumberland County, NC, and appears to have some connection tot he Virginia Hodges.
