SC JOHN JOSEPH RICHARD thanks, josie Full Context of South Carolina Magazine of Ancestral Research, Vol. 7 Results The South Carolina Magazine of Ancestral Research Pp. 168a-172a: (Estate of RICHARD HODGES). Elizabeth Hodges, John Iley & sarah his wife, Margaret Hodges, and Wealthy Hodges, the two latter of whom are minors over the age of fourteen years, Francis Hodges, & Hendrick Hodges both of whom are minors under the age of fourteen that their father Richard Hodges did on the 24th day of December 1819 execute several deeds of gift in favour of your Orators and Oratrixes copies of which are exhibited (to wit) one in favour of Elizabeth Hodges and Sarah now the wife of John Iley by which he gave to Elizabeth a negro girl named Amy to Sarah a girl named June and to them both jointly a negro boy named Tom, Also a Deed in favour of your Oratrixes Margaret Hodges and Wealthy Hodges by which he gave to Margaret a negro woman named Jude who has since had a child named Henry, to Wealthy a Boy named Lemuel and to them both jointly a boy named Anderson, also a deed in favour of your Orator & Oratrix Frances and Hendrick by which he gave to Frances among other things a negro girl named Siller to Hendrick a negro boy named Jordan and to them both jointly a boy named Ben all of which were recorded on the 22nd day of January following… their father Richard Hodges some time after the execution deeds of gift sold all the above mentioned negroes to one Jacob Niswanger who with a full knowledge of the existence of the Deeds of Gift contracted with the said Richard for the said Negroes without the privity or consent of your Orators and Oratrixes…that the said Jacob Niswanger discharged the debts then due by him the said Richard amounting to the sum of about $1200 and agreed to pay him $1092 at a future period, That the sum of $1200 not being more than half the value of the negroes discharged all the debts which existed.… EXHIBIT A. South Carolina, Laurens District. whereas our Father Richard Hodges has made us sundry deeds of gift of the following negroes (viz) Jude, Amey, Jean, Tom, Lemuel, Anderson, Jordan, Benjamin, Ciller, and we whose names are hereunto annexed not being desirous to disinterest our Parents Richard and Rachel Hodges of any property to us given during their natural lives, we Elizabeth, Sarah, Margaret, Wealthy, Frances and Hance Hodges do agree that we will not demand call for or try to get into possession of said property for their term of life…14th February 1820. August 17 1820 Rec'd of Jacob Niswanger the sum of $1350 for five negroes which are bound by different Judgements…viz Amey, Jenny, Tom, Lemuel & Jordan which being appraised by Mr. Lewis Watson & Zachariah Arnold amounts to the above stated sum… Richard Hodge August 17 1820. Received of Jacob NIswanger $1050 for four negroes viz Jude, Anderson, Benjamin & Siller.… Richard Hodges (Also copies of deeds of gift mentioned in bill, wit. by E. S. Rowland and Gabriel Jowell). Agreement between Richard Hodges and Jacob Niswanger, 17 Aug 1820.
