Dear List, I am trying to find out what became of Rev. Reuben A. Hodge and his family. He was born in Rumney, N.H., on 25 Feb. 1811, son of Thomas and Lucy (Webber) Hodge of Rumney. In 1834 Reuben married, in Rumney, to Marinda AVERY, born in Ellsworth, N.H., about 1815, daughter of Andrew and Sarah (Willey) Avery of Ellsworth and later Rumney. Reuben and Marinda moved from Rumney, N.H., to Fairfax, Vt., in 1841, where he became pastor of the Baptist Church there. He ministered to churches in Westford, Vt. (about 1850); Orwell, Vt. (about 1860); and Monkton, Vt., where he last appeared about 1866 or 1867. He moved away from there at that time, and apparently left Vermont. Where did he go? Marinda is last seen in the 1860 census of Orwell, but I do not think she died there. Their children seem to have been (first three born in Rumney, N.H., and the rest in Vermont, as noted): 1.) Alma, b. ca. 1835, living in 1850 census, age 15; n.f.r. 2.) Walter, b. ca. 1837, living in 1850 census, age 17; n.f.r. 3.) Caleb N., b. ca. 1839, mar. Orwell, Vt., 27 Sept. 1862, Sarah Emma Spaulding, and he died there 21 Aug. 1863, leaving one son, Thomas Spaulding Hodge, who went to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and whose family has been traced, but they know nothing of the others. 4.) Idota J., b. Fairfax or Westford, Vt., ca. 1848, living in 1860; n.f.r. 5.) Edna I., b. Westford, 3 Nov. 1851, d. there 13 May 1852, age 6 mos. 10 days (gravestone). 6.) Hiram H., b. probably Westford, ca. 1853, living in 1860 census; n.f.r. 7.) Edna A., b. Orwell, d. there 3 May 1861, age illegible on Vermont vital record. Can anybody tell me where this family went? They evidently all moved away somewhere. Have been trying for years to track them down. I thought the Baptist records would help, saying where the minister had gone, but all I could find out was that Rev. Hodge resigned his position in Monkton about 1866 or 1867, whereupon they presumably moved away as I have not found them in Vermont on the 1870 census. Any help greatly appreciated. The published Hodge genealogy does not help at all. George Sanborn Derry, N.H.
