I recently saw the posting at the bottom of this letter on this Hodges list. I am hopeful someone can help me clarify things. First , I am a descendant of JOHN F.HODGES , SR,and his wife ANN STANDARD , from Darlington District , SC. Far better researchers than myself have evidently tried for years and been unable to come up with who this JOHN's parents were; thus , I was quite surprised and excited when I came upon an entry by chance in a book " The Arbuthnots in North America" , by Margaret Arbuthnot Ridall and Elizabeth Ridall Henry. The entry was regarding John Wesley Arbuthnot and wife Mary Elizabeth Waddell. Acording to this book , Mary Elizabeth (Lizzie)Waddell was born in Baton Rouge 26 July 1850 and died in Albuquerque NM 6 April 1913. It said she was a daughter of Hugh T. Waddell and Mary Frances nee Yersin. It further stated : "Lizzie's brothers were Robert D. and Charles Waddell. Her grandparents were Abel Waddell , migrated from Darlington , SC and died in MS, and Loretta nee_______. Abel Waddell's parents were NOEL WADDELL and MARY ANN nee HODGES , daughter of JOHN F. HODGES , SR.and ANN STANDARD . NOEL WADDELL and MARY ANN HODGES were first cousins. MARY ANN HODGES WADDELL was a sister of JOHN F. HODGES , JR. , father of MARY ANN HODGES who married the Rev. John Sawyer Arbuthnot.Noel Waddell's parents were ABEL WADDELL and RACHEL nee STANDARD. RACHEL'S sister ANN married JOHN F. HODGES , SR........" Now , here comes the part which was a HUGE surprise for me........ " JOHN SR.'S parents were FRANCIS HODGES , born in Belfast , Northern Ireland , and ELIZABETH. They came from Belfast 21 July 1761 , to the United States on the Brigantine Chichester , with ROBERT , age 8 ; ALEXANDER , age 6 ; and JOHN , age 4 . JOHN F. HODGES , SR. and ANN STANDARD had : MARY ANN , born 18 Nov. 1780 , married NOEL WADDELL 21 Dec. 1797; JOHN F. , JR. , born 24 Jan. 1783, married THEREBY HARRELL ; SARAH ; WILLIAM ; ANN ; REBECCA ; NANCY ; DORTHY ; WILLIAM HENRY ; ROBERT ; ELIZABETH ; GEORGE ; and RICHARD ." As you can see , this is the same information regarding FRANCIS HODGES which was posted to this list , and which is at the bottom of this page.I contacted the author/compiler of the Arbuthnot book , and she put me in touch with the lady who said she was the person who had researched this and who had come to the conclusion that JOHN F. HODFES , SR. was the son of the above FRANCIS HODGES and his wife ELIZABETH. She said that she had "found that information years ago digging around in a library somewhere in South Carolina. I even went to Doveville ? (I think that is the name of the town) where the Waddells and the Hodges are located. The church foundation is still there but nothing is let now but an overgrown cemetery with water mocasins. I was tooafraid of the snakes to venture into the cemetery. Anyway there was a book that I found which gave this information about the Hodges....." She then went on to say that she is extremely busy , but would try to dig up the information when she could. I don't want to continue to hassle her regarding how she came to these conclusions , what she found in the cemetery , and what book she meant, and would have just waited patiently til she hopefully had the time to fill me in-- but then , the posting came across the Hodges list which referred to the very same FRANCIS HODGES who this lady feels is the father of JOHN F. HODGES , SR. I then saw a posting to the list from Kenneth Hodge , who stated that he thought this FRANCIS was probably the father of a GEORGE HODGE from Burke Co. , NC. I know Kenneth is a meticulous researcher , so was hopeful that maybe he , or someone else on the list , could help me either prove or disprove the father/son kinship of FRANCIS HODGE and JOHN F. HODGES , SR. My research time is rather limited at certain times also , and it just happens that I have a little freed up time now and in the next week or so.After that , my time will be at more of a premium , unfortunately. That's another reason why I'm attempting to enlist help from list members now, rather than waiting for the lady I contacted to eventually get back to me. Thanks for any help that any of you can give me.
