To: ddavis@logicsouth.com Dear Diana DAVIS, Below is a slightly revised message which lists eleven children b 1791-1820 for John HODGES Sr (name of wife unknown); I don't know who another two might be -- I've not seen more than eleven listed anywhere. A John HODGES divorced a Tabitha _____ in the early 1800s (I don't have the record handy which indicates date and possibly county - it's in The Georgia Black Book Volume II). Although this message by now needs some serious updates, that list of the children is based on the Isaac HODGES-Flora GRAHAM Family Bible Record (two transcriptions). I don't know of primary evidence for a number of the middle names that appear with many of these folks in secondary sources, shown thusly {?} below, including my wife's ancestor Samuel {? ?} HODGES, younger brother of John HODGES Sr, for whom I have never even seen a middle initial in the records. John {?} HODGES Sr appears to be the son of William {?} HODGES Sr d by 1802 (based on deed records). Most importantly, I know of no primary evidence to link this family to other, earlier HODGES. The secondary sources listing William HODGES Sr's wife as Mary _____ may also be based on the HODGES-DAMPIER deed record from 1802, where Mary HODGES is listed with the children (John HODGES [Sr], William HODGES [Jr], Samuel HODGES, Nathan HODGES, Mary HODGES & John DAMPEER who m Esenure HODGES) and thus could be a daughter or the widow (that deed is posted at the Screven Co GA genweb site). The Tory leanings and East Fl connections for this family may provide us some answers as to earlier HODGES connections. May God Bless You and Your Family, Bob (John Robert) PEAVY Post Office Box 1519 Rincon GA 31326-1519 Carol: The Nathaniel HODGES data is on my list for getting together soon (we'll be out of town next week, but I hope to finish soon since I won't be able to get to the Statesboro Court House to see his will and transcribe it -- I'll have only an abstract for now). I also track down that JACKSON blacksmith data. ________________________________ 06/02/99 Subject: Re: [GASCREVE-L] Re: JOHN AND TABITHA HODGES Do you have John and Tabitha's 13 children? Site: http://www.my-ged.com/davis/ ---------------------- Forwarded and somewhat revised --------------------------- From: John R Peavy 12/12/98 Subject: [GASCREVE-L] HODGES Effingham and Screven Cos GA Dear GA HODGES researchers, I will not have the opportunity to greatly revise this 3 Jun 1998 message to Cousin Joyce right now (we're moving next week), but I hope that it will be somewhat helpful until I can. Consider this message as notes on a work in progress. My wife is descended from this HODGES family which is predominantly in Effingham and Screven Cos GA (and Cousin Joyce's bunch to Lowndes Co GA). At about the same time as this family appeared in early Effingham Co GA (founded 1777), another HODGES family appeared in another part of early Effingham Co GA in what was to become Screven Co GA (formed 1793) and then Bulloch Co GA (formed 1796)(my ancestors, whom I outlined in a post to HODGES-L on 23 Nov 1998, Subject: HODGES Bulloch Co GA & BOYKIN Screven Co GA). Similar names in the same general area sometimes make difficult the division of records between them. My wife's Samuel HODGES m2, and I will be on the lookout for more information concerning him and his two wives and their children. Yet another complication (a third bunch or a variation on the first?): There is another Samuel HODGES b 1815, the son of William {Henry?} HODGES (b 1770 NC d 1849 m1 c 1805 m1 Ann BLITCH b c 1775 d 1815 Tattnall Co GA m2 11 Mar 1827 Tattnall Co GA) & Hannah COLSON (b 1787). Samuel HODGES b 1815 d c 1848 m Elizabeth DANIEL. This data is generally taken from Hodges Family History - Allied Family: Little - 1675-1849, compiled by Robert Ellis COLSON of Huntsville AL (5 pp, published 1992?) which begins with Robert HODGES in MD/VA in the 1730's and continues through his grandson John Robert HODGES b c 1735 d c 1810 who was a property owner in Effingham Co GA by 1790 who m c 1756 Tabitha {LITTLE?}, parents of William {Henry?} HODGES who moved to Tattnall Co GA in 1806. At this point, lacking the data on which the analysis in this paragraph and that of The History of Screven County, Georgia Family History Article F173 are based, I can't tell if the families are all one or if data from the one has been confused with the other (recurrence of John m Tabitha). Although the effect of this message will perhaps be confusion, the intent is to point out that the similar names among these two or three (or more) HODGES families in South GA makes caution a high priority when plodding through the data. ... ------- To: jfeazell@datasys.net Subject: HODGES Effingham, Screven and Bulloch Cos GA Part II Dear Cousin Joyce, I've added the information that you shared and a couple of other tidbits concerning your (and my wife's) HODGES line, the children of William HODGES d by 1802: John HODGES [Sr] m by 1790 Effingham Co GA m {Tabitha?} _____, parents of Elizabeth HODGES b 12 Mar 1791 m 18 Feb 1819 Bulloch Co GA d < 1850 m Henry FERN ?b 1794 England d > 1850 Lucretia HODGES b 19 Mar 1793 James HODGES b 6 Feb 1796 William {James?} HODGES b 8 Nov 1798 GA m 4 Apr 1833 Effingham Co GA d > 1860 m Martha {Margaret?} [W.] COLSON b c 1812 GA d > 1860 (granddaughter of Mouring WILLIAM SHEPPARD who at age 95 is with them in 1850) Andrew E. As I wrote previously (I'm not sure that you got this), as to whether Jane BLACK HODGES was widowed or her husband Samuel HODGES was widowered, I don't know [I now understand that they were divorced]: "... Hodges and Mary Ann Dampier were in Lowndes County, Ga in the 1850, 1860, 1870 Census. I don't have a marriage license for them but feel sure they were married in Lowndes County since he was born and raised in Lowndes. His father Nathan came to Lowndes in 1828 settled on Land Lot 85 and stayed until his death. Daniel G. stayed with him and ended up buying Land Lot 86 and kept it until his death and it was divided among his 6 children. William Calhoun Hodges the second child of Daniel G. Hodges bought the other 5 childrens part of the land lot and it was again divided among his children. A large portion of the land is still with decendants of his, which included my father, Perry. When dad died his land was divided among five of us, and we all still have that portion of Land Lot 86. The question of John Hodges b. 22 Nov 1807, he married Julia Ann Boyd and he was the son of Nathan Hodges and Mary Graham. I have Samuel Hodges married to Jane Black as first wife and Margaret Graham as second wife. Samuel and Jane had a son named Ambrose. I have other information on both these families if you would like to have it. The other names you mentioned in Bullock County, Ga, I think, are from another line of Hodges. I haven't made a connection with them as yet, although they came into Georgia about the same time as our Hodges. The birthdates I have for the following, you may have them already. Elizabeth Hodges was born 12 Mar 1791 wife of Henry Fern. Lucretia Hodges was born 19 Mar 1793. James Hodges was born 6 Feb 1796. William Hodges was born 8 Nov 1798. Patience Hodges was born 1 Aug 1801. John Hodges was born 4 Jan 1804. Hardy Hodges was born 25 Jun 1806. Elishee Hodges was born 16 Mar 1809 Sarah Hodges was born 26 Jan 1819 Sabinah Hodges was born 30 Jun 1820 ? Julia Hodges born 22 Apr 1774; d. 16 May 1781 Nathan Hodges was born 16 Oct 1772; d. 17 Apr 1848 wife Mary Graham born 19 May 1785; d. 29 Sep 1841 I have a family for Esenure Hodges and John Warren Dampier. Also the family of William Hodges. Would you like to have them also. Joyce
