    1. [HODGES-L] Wm. Hdges Part II
    2. Please post a correction to any error. As these were for personal notes I do not have attributes given to the sources, my apology. Jim Sims Part II Virginia: References to Hodges in Va. and particularly along Licking Hole Creek are given because of the tie of William Hodges to Francis Kearby by the marriage of Wm. Hodge to Elizabeth Kearby, dau. of Francis Kearby. 1727- It is probable that the William Hodges, who died prior to 1732, was the same William Hodges who had lived earlier in Chesterfield County, and then on the north side of the James River near Elk Island, and that he was the father or brother of Robert Hodges who lived on Jenitow Creek. No evidence has been found that Robert Hodges or Hoges of Jenitoe Creek ever lived on LickingHole Creek himself, even though he acquired a tract of 400 acres there and deeded part of it to John Hodges and part of it to William Hodges, giving rise to the conjecture that they were his sons. Although we find Edmund Hodges on Licking Hole Creek six years after William and John, they were likely of the same generation (Hodges Msg Board file 214) 1727- A patent is issued to William Hodges for 380 acres on 16 June 1727 and recorded in the patents book 13, page 89 (Archives of Virginia State Library in Richmond.) 1728- Goochland Co. created from Henrico Co. 1728- Two Goochland Co. deeds, both date 1 July 1728 and recorded 16 July 1728 indicated that Robert Hoges/Hodges and William Worters exchanged respective 200 acre tracts of land on the north side of the James River in St. James Parish, and by description lying on Deep Creek of Licking Hole Creek. Both deeds were witnessed by John Hoges, Thomas Carter and Austin Moore. The language of the two deeds is almost identical. 1732- A patent to William Swift mentioned a tract of land adjacent to the land of William Hodges, deceased. 1733- Estimated date of birth of William Hodges who was father of William Hodges 1754. 1733- Francis Kearby on March 12, 1733 purchased from William Mills and Mary, his wife, 100 acres on Licking Hole Creek the deed being witnessed by Richard Kearby, Edmond Hogges, and William Grimes. 1740- will of David Walker, presumed from wills as father of Sarah Davis, mother of Elizabeth Davis Kerby, Goochland Deeds 434. 1742- Cumberland Co. created from Goochland Co. 1745- On 6 August 1745 William Owen (Father-in-Law of John Kearby) sold this (?) land to Michael Holland Sr. for 25 pds. current money. Added to the above description was Licking Hole Creek and Thomas Machem as a bounding owner. Witnesses were Henry Martin, James Graves, and William Attkins and the deed was recorded 17 Sept. 1745. His mark was a right side up “W”. His wife Lydia released her dower right. Of significance is the name Attkins, since William’s daughter Lydia married an Atkins. 1749- a Thomas Hodges dies in Cumberland Co., Va. 1749- Goochland and Henrico Co. were divided to form two new counties. All of Goochland County and the part of Henrico County that lay on the north side of the James River would remain (even until today) Goochland County and Henrico County. The parts of Goochland Co. and Henrico Co. that lay south of the James River would become Cumberland County (from Goochland) and Chesterfield Co. (from Henrico).
