Va, On 18 Feb. 1743 Tho Shirley tithable dismissed as being too feeble to work out his assessment. He wit. a deed 1 July 1743, probably father of John who follows: ref. Tax. lists, deed bk. p. 164. (2) JOHN SHIRLEY, b. ca. 1700 of Spotsylvania Co. Va., died intestate 1764. Spotsylvania Co. formed 1720 from Esses, King and Queen and King William; Caroline Co. formed 1727 from same counties, where he found himself a resident. On 17 Nov. 1744 John Shirley, a planter, of Caroline Co. purchased from Wm. Prewett 200 a. in Spots. Co. Va., wit. Wm. Emerson, George Stubblefield and Henry Williams. On 6 Aug. 1764 Elizabeth Shirley adm. of John Shirley, dec'd, estate with surety Roger Dixon. On 10 Jan. 1773 Elizabeth and John Shirley wit. to a deed, no doubt her son, ref. Spots. Co. Va. deed p. 61, 167, 300, 301. It has been suggested that Elizabeth was nee Thomas. (3) JOHN SHIRLEY, b. ca. 1733 of Spotsylvania Co. Va. He was living there in 1795. His wife was also Elizabeth. On 10 Sep. 1785 John Shearley and wife Elizabeth of Spots. Co. to Samuel Luck, 9 a., wit. Thomas Shirley, Francis Hodges. His son, John, was called "John Shirley, Jr." Both sons, John and Thomas, were Patriots. John stated in his oration for pension that "He enlisted from his father's home in Spots. Co. Va., his father hired James Kemp as a substitute for himself." On 27 Mar. 1788 John Shirley, Sr. to John Shirley, Jr. both of Spots. Co. Va., 191 a., wit. Thomas Shirley, Christopher Crawford, Dorothy Dodd and Thomas Turner. On 12 Jan. 1795 John Shirley, Sr. of Berkeley Parish, Spots. Co. Va. to dtr., Dorothy Dodd, wife of Henry Dodd, gift, wit. Thomas Shirley, Marandy Morris and James Crawford. On 27 Oct. 1788 James Crawford, Sr. and John Shirley, Sr. of Spots. Co. Va. for love and affection to John Crawford and wife Phoebe, wit. Ky. stated he entered service from Spots. Co. Va. as a Marine on the "Venture", went to his father's home. He served four months in Culpeper Co., continued a citizen of Spots. Co. until 1807 when he migrated to Mercer Co. Ky. then set. in Adair Co. Ky., md. 25 Nov. 1782 Frances G. Yates b. 1759 Caroline Co. Va. d. 22 Sep. 1843, ae. 84, bur. Adair Co. Ky., dtr. of George and Frances (Lewis) Yates. They were pts. of six children, wit. to his Pension application, John Estes, George Y. Shirley and Francis G.
