    3. John C. Hodges b. 15 Mar 1892 Cotton Valley, Louisiana m. #1 Lillian Nelson Hodges who died 1951 in CA (during summer vacation) m. #2 Mrs. Cornelia Smartt (a widow) in 1952 John C. Hodges was noted for his book, Harbrace Handbook of English. He was Professor of English at the University of Tennessee (Knoxville) from 1921 to 1962. He was Head of the English Department from 1937 to 1962. After he retired, he was the Co-ordinator of library development at the University of Tennessee. Two of his degrees were from Louisiana, the B.A from Meridian College in 1911; Masters from Tulane and the PhD from Harvard in 1918. Professor Hodges was an elder and deacon in the First Presbyterian Church and he lived at 8 Hillvale Circle in Knoxville when he died. According to one obit. he had one surviving son, John Nelson Hodges of Philadelphia, PA. The library at the U. of Tennessee (Knoxville) is named the John C. Hodges Library.
