James M, Hodges Jan 19, 1903 I was born Jan 19th 1813 in the town of Ferrisburg addison co. VT. In the month of July 1816 Father the late John Hodges with his Theodosia Alford and their three children of whom I am the youngest, moved from Vt to Erie County Pa a distance about 555 miles a very long distance considering the meansa of conveyance, and the new roads many times leading through dense woods. Our conveyance was a span of horses hitched to a long sled with high box and cover in this vehicle was stored our wardrobe beds and bedding, a dozen bottles of casteroil and a dozen cast steel hors a set of augurs, a grubbling hor and mattock this tools were all made in Vergins Vt. When we went My Uncle Richard Gage had a simular out fit and one more the small children rode while the older ones would walk along side. ( Talks about crossing Lake Champlain and then across Ny, State, We had now lived in Pa for about nine years , we had occuoied 6 different houses the last a hewed log house on the Acadamy land where we accumlated more property than we had in the six years before. we had 11 head of horned cattle 30 sheep and 4 hogs besides 4 or 5 two horse waggon loads of household goods. greens, patotes. A good pair of horses waggons, sleigh plow, and drag and our family had grown now there was John Orville, Theodosia Lorin Myself and Royal and May L we know have a place of our own located on the turnpike between Cambridge and Fort Lebouf. we have built a barn and have cleared all the woods for the buildings of a house, Far different from we pulled into Grandfather Alford"s so many years ago. My Note ; This is the Father of Alpheus Hodges civil war 9th new York Cav. also one of the younger borthers to my grandfather John Orville. This is just a small part of the lettler that he left to his grandchildren, but it has blessed so many others I thought I'd share it with all. What was omited was the death of several of the children, and a short story about a wild bull at whitesalt, while they were stoped there refreashing and resting the Horses and oxen.
