Bob and Frank, I haven't been able to locate any more on this Major Hodge. Smyth Co., Va. was formed in 1832 from Washington Co. and I couldn't even locate any Hodge families there in the 1800's. I didn't see any Major's in Moses' line but my file on him is incomplete. The following is the closest that I could find: ix Major Hodges B. c 1808 md. 6/12/1829 Surry Co., NC sp. Elizabeth Sexton Bdm. Matthew Hodges If your Major was born in 1840, the odds are that he was in the CW and maybe the "Major" was a military title. Have you checked the rosters for him in SW Va. (he may have enlisted in Washington Co.)? Do you have a listing of siblings or issue of Robert Huffman Hodge? Maybe that will offer clues. Could be that his mother's maiden name was Huffman.
