    3. On spellings, you can not assume anything. The Hodge line I am concerned with has varient spellings back in the mid to tail end of thee 1700's as Hoge Hogg Hog even a Hug. And sometimes an individual deliberately changed the spelling for one reason or another. You might not find the s tacked on to the surname but I would not count on it, once you get beyond the more recent era, or, past the ones you actually know about. One f my cousins had a relative leave with his name Barto, but came back a couple years later Bartow and it stayed Bartow. this just goes back a couple generations. Younever know.
