    1. [HODGES-L] Greenwood, Abbeville and Laurens
    2. Elijah Hodges
    3. Greenwood County, or parts of it, used to be in the old Abbeville Dist, and the 96th Dist. before that. Hodges, South Carolina is now in Greenwood County. Abbeville County is on the West side, and Laurens County is on the East side of Greenwood County. Hodges is in the middle. Greenwood is the largest City between Greenville and Columbia. Hodges is almost right in the middle between Abbeville, Abbeville Co, and Laurens, Laurens Co. There is a little town South East of Greenwood called "Ninety Six." It is all in easy reach of the Columbia Airport, and there are plenty of accommodations in the area. The three counties have court houses and historic societies, land records, church records and military records. It might be a good idea to spend a few weeks down there trying to tie all the Hodges together. It appears that there were two or three different families. However, because my ancestor Richard was killed early, we do not have a record connecting my ancestor to the other Hodges, or the others to the others, if you know what I mean. Records aren't the first priority on a fronteer. We may never find the whole truth, but I believe that there is information still out there. It also seems to me that almost everyone has focused on Abbeville because it was the seat of government two hundred years ago. I am willing to bet that there are records in Greenwood Co, and Laurens Co that haven't been explored as well. Eventually I will be back to Ft. Jackson for another eight weeks of fun and games. During the off hours I intend to explore a little larger area around Hodges, SC. 3. Elijah - I would like to spend a few weeks in Abbeville, Laurens Co., etc. I have been to Hodges, SC and some of the areas near there; however, I had my husband with me and he was anxious to go play golf with his son-in-law or something and as usual, my wishes were rushed delegated into the back- ground. Next time, I am there, I will try to go off by myself. Our daughter & family are now living in Clemson again so perhaps this fall I will have the opportunity to return there and research and/or spend some time with our grandchildren. I am aware that Al Metts said there were errors in the book; however, he did not say what they were. I am certain that it will take some time to sort out all the proper HODGES as there were many families in that area. Your theories may be correct. If we keep digging, I feel certain we will find the answer. I see no mention of my Isaac HODGES and Rebecca McClain in the Moragnes book, however, Rebecca Hodges may have been the daughter of the HOWARD family. Rebecca had a sister, Sarah or Sara McClain who married Edmund Hodges so it was a case of sisters marrying brothers and that has happened a lot in my family. Some of my lines with photos are on our website which is www.hackley.com. What is it that takes you to Fort Jackson for 8 weeks???? The Moragnes book mentions the story of the Hodges family being attacked by indians and one of the daughters being taken by one of the chiefs as his wife. The name of their son is never mentioned. I wondered if he used the name of Hodges. My GGG Grandfather, Isaac Hodges was born 1790 in Abbeville dist. as were so many other HODGES. I thought there were only 3 Hodges in Abbeville during the time of the 1790 Federal Census, namely, John, Drury and Isaac. Wonder where Richard come in??? Is it Laurens or Greenwood? regards, Gerry HODGES Hackley in the Sparkling City by the Sea > >Elijah >----- Original Message ----- >From: "Bob Hodges" <vhodges131@comcast.net> >To: <HODGES-L@rootsweb.com> >Sent: Thursday, April 24, 2003 10:46 PM >Subject: Re: [HODGES-L] laurens countyDaughters of the American Revolution >Lineage Books (152 Vols.) > > >> The john hodges referenced is the one from Greenville County, SC, who >> married Sarah Merritt and was the son ofWilliam Hodges who married >Elizabeth >> Kerby and moved to Alabama.
