    1. [HODGES-L] Liquor Conspiracy Case
    2. Bob Hodges
    3. I am resposting an e-mail I sent to someone inquiring about this same topic: Wingfield's Franklin County history book says that J.P. Hodges was sheriff from 1912 to 1926. Then his son D. Wilson Hodges served out his unexpired term. The Salmon history recounts that Deputy Sheriff J. P. Hodges took part in the capture of bootlegger Cephas Poindexter in 1905, after Poindexter killed U.S. Deputy Marshal Zackfield B. Wade. D. Wilson Hodges ws indicted by a federal grand jury in Harrisonburg in 1935 for conspiracy to defraud the government of whiskey excise taxes. The Salmons have an extensive discussion about how Sheriff Peter Hodges organized protection for bootlegging in Franklin County after his election in 1928. The account mentions the brothers D. Wilson Hodges and Joseph P. Hodges, Jr. and their mother Betty as testifying in the case. D. Wilson Hodges left office Jan. 1, 1932 after he was defeated for reelection. You should look at the Salmon book first. Its source is the Roanoke Times (newspaper) for dates around April, 1935. The Salmons note that a fictionalized account of the conspiracy can be found in Jess Carr, The Moonshiners. Other Hodges mentioned are Kent Hodges, George S. Hodges, Alphonso Hodges, and Willard R. Hodges. Now you know why no one wants to talk about it a whole lot. As far as Si Hodges, my guess is that he is a Josiah. A Josiah Hodges in the War Between the States from Franklin County was in the 57th Va. Infantry. My best guess would be that the one you are looking for is the son of William and Lavinia Hodges, married 1825, and born about 1840. His brothers and sisters were Mitchell, Caleb, Peter (d. 1865), Nancy, Ferdinand, and Fanny (and possibly others). But you should be able to look in the 1870 or 1880 Census and spot Joseph Peter, Sr's family right away.
