    3. hh - household 1850s - Screven Co GA Census of 1850 1860e - Effingham Co GA Census of 1860 1870b - Bulloch Co GA Census of 1870 Dear George H. FLAKE, Please send your thanks for the FLAKE file (WFLAKE.RTF) to Bill & Susan ELLIS of Baton Rouge LA; their generosity and the help of so many FLAKE researchers could lead to quite a genealogy for the FLAKE family, simply by amendment of the ELLIS' considerable effort. Although I am not a FLAKE descendant (so far as is known now), I incorporate a great deal of the FLAKE information as well as data for the allied families (my wife and I are part of some of those allied families) in a continuing and long-range project for an annotated Census of 1850 for Bulloch, Effingham and Screven Cos GA. A POYTHRESS descendant graciously furnished information for the related WILDER family, which included birth dates for the FLAKEs to whom you refer, sons of William FLAKE and Mary BUTTS WILDER FLAKE; in the early 19th century, a member of the WILDER family in Burke Co GA had recorded in a ledger book the births of that lady's WILDER children, and perhaps her FLAKE children. I have data from the WILDER ledger book, but I do not have any transcript from it (I understand that much of it consists of business transactions). The WILDER information indicates that Hillary FLAKE was b 22 Jan 1806 and Richard Scruggs FLAKE was b 17 Nov 1809(?). I will forward to you three fairly recent messages concerning FLAKE and allied families: 9 Apr 1999 WILDER Burke, Screven & Effingham Cos GA 9 Apr 1999 FLAKE Screven Co GA 1850 28 Jun 1999 FLAKE Screven Co GA, ELKINS Effingham Co GA 1850s lists Hillard FLAKE (hh 41, recorded by Census Taker John CAMERON). Page 13 of the Screven Co GA Tax Digest of 1852 has Hillary FLAKE in the 36th District and of military age (recorded by Receiver of Tax Returns George Duke SHARPE); page 33 shows Richard FLAKE as a defaulter in the 36th District, and also of military age. Such a variation in the recording of the name would not be unusual. The several variations I've found among abstracts of records for the names of my ancestors Tobias BOYKIN and Zoeth SPOONER are much more extreme. I had Richard Scruggs FLAKE m1 23 Jul 1830/2 Aug 1830 Screven Co GA m1 Ann HODGES m2 10 Jan 1860 Screven Co GA m2 Margaret A. WILLIAMS (I do not know which WILLIAMS family is hers). I have no additional names for Ann HODGES. I base her relationship to her HODGES family on this abstract: Screven Co GA Deed Book M p 8: 17 Aug 1834 Jane [BLACK] HODGES deeded a slave girl to "my well-beloved daughter, Ann [HODGES] FLAKE." Additionally, in 1850s, [the divorced] Jane [BLACK] HODGES 65 is at hh 21 with only [her granddaughter] Sarah FLAKE 17, and Sarah FLAKE 17 is double-counted with her parents and siblings at hh 407. Although I also had J. as the middle initial of Lucinda G. FLAKE, I have not been able to find a source for that information. As you indicated, the marriage license has Lucinda G. FLAKE. Is Keziah Cornelia MCELVEEN FLAKE the daughter of William E. MCELVEEN (b c 1813) & Elizabeth _____ (b c 1819 d by 1860)? His will of 6 May 1876 was probated 9 Apr 1880 in Bulloch Co GA, and mentions only "my children" and his second wife, America _____ (b c 1840 m c 1861 d > 1880). I also have a m date of 21 Oct 1861 Effingham Co GA (from Mrs. Julian C. LANE's marriage record abstracts) for Richard W. FLAKE b 1845-1846 (from 1850e and 1860e) & Keziah C. MCELVEEN b c 1849 (from 1850b hh 238/245 -- 1860b indicates that she was motherless, and only 9 years old! -- in 1870b she is no longer with her father's family). Perhaps there is a typographical error in that m date (I have not seen the record at the court house); as you indicated, they would have m when they were about 15-16 and 12 years old respectively and m about the time that her father remarried. I very much appreciate your detailed citation of sources in posing your questions. I did not know previously of the divorce of Ann HODGES and Richard Scruggs FLAKE. Have you any similar references for the divorce of her parents, Jane BLACK & Samuel HODGES? May God Bless You and Your Family, Bob (John Robert) PEAVY Post Office Box 1519 Rincon GA 31326-1519 cc - Bill & Susan ELLIS: It appears that a great deal of help is available among the descendants of William FLAKE! cc - Chris & Terri ELKINS: I do not know believe that I have received From Robin EVANS the ELKINS data to which you referred. ________________________________ From: George H. Flake gflake@cbd.net 07/21/99 To: Hodges123@aol.com cc: BillandSusan@worldnet.att.net, REvans1644@aol.com, Bob (John Robert) Peavy Subject: Descendents of William Flake I received a copy of a file on William Flake via Donna Evans. I am very thankful to the author for the information. I am a descendent through Richard S. Flake and Ann Hodges. I noted some information that seemed contradictory and I wonder if there is some source information to back up the information in question. The birthdays for Richard Scruggs Flake, November 17, 1809, and Hilliard Flake, January 22, 1810, are only 2 months apart. The census information seems to indicate that Hilliard was born about 1806. The marriage certificate of Hillary Flake and Elizabeth Catherine Coughran lists Hilliard's name as Hillary. Also in Screven County Superior Court Records 1852-1861, pages 335, and 345, the name is listed as Hillary Flake. What is the source for the name Hilliard? Ann Hodges, the first wife of Richard S. Flake, is listed as Margaret Ann Hodges in the descendents file. The marriage certificate, Screven County, Georgia Record Book A, page 251, list the couple as Richard S. Flake and Ann Hodges. Their divorce proceedings, Screven County, Georgia Superior Court Record Book A, pages 22, 73 and 137 list their names as Richard S. Flake and Ann Hodges. Richard S. Flake married Margaret A. Williams January 1860 by Ambrose Hodges, brother of Ann Hodges. Refer to Screven County, Georgia Marriage Book C, page 89. Richard S. Flake and M. A. Flake appear in the Screven County, Georgia Census, 36th District, page 14, Dwelling No. 88, Family Group 88. In 1860, Ann Hodges was living in Effingham County with her younger children. Refer to 1860 Effingham County, Georgia, P.O. Egypt, Page 10, Dwelling No. 72, Family No. 72. In 1870, she was living with her daughter, Lucinda G. Flake Stewart in Savannah. Refer to Dwelling No. 1522, Family No. 1682. Lucinda G. Flake is listed as Lucinda J. Flake in the descendents file. Her marriage certificate and death notice lists her name as Lucinda G. Flake Stewart. She died May 16, 1872 in Savannah. I believe that her birthdate is January 13, 1853 rather than June 13, 1853. (I am trying to locate my source for this date). Keziah C. McElveen, the wife of Richard William (Billy) Flake was born September 5, 1849 according to information in McElveen Family History compiled by Lucille Garland. A copy is in the Bulloch County Library in Statesboro, Georgia. It is unlikely that Richard and Kiziah were married October 22, 1861 Both would have been much too young. Keziah's middle name is Cornelia. Richard William and Keziah are my great grandparents. Sincerely, George H. She is buried in Guyton Cemetery in Effingham County, next to the Elkins plot of the cemetery under an oak tree. I will send you some information about the Elkins, or Robin Evans in Jacksonville may have already done so. I am descended from Tryon Elkins and Julia Flake's son Henry Clay Elkins, born in 1865. Henry Clay Elkins' oldest son James Randolph Elkins, born in 1899, was my grandfather. Thank you for all the information. I just downloaded the descendants of William Flake. I'll send you more soon. It was my wife Terri who posted the original message. She has been a big help. Take care, Chris Elkins.
