I have just a few more thoughts to add to my Bermuda triangle posts. The one William Hodges who married a Mary born between 1770 and 1780 that I have found is William Hodges who married Mary Lax in Halifax County in 1805. The numbers fit, but could he have moved to Giles County, Virginia? I would appreciate hearing from someHalifax County researchers. James Hodges appears in the Knox County, Kentucky tax lists of 1800, 1801, 1802 (with Stephen Hodges), 1803, 1804, 1805, 1806 (with Mashac Hodges and Luther Hodges), 1808, and 1809, and in the 1810 Census (over 45 or born before 1765). In 1811, he is in the tax list for Clay County (formed in part from Knox). In the 1820 Census of Clay County, he is shown as 40-50, and in the 1830 Census, now in Laurel County, 50-60 (or born 1770-1780). If this is the same man as in the 1779 deed in Hanry County, Va., he was born by about 1758. I would appreciate any feedback thathelps connect upthe branches and twigs to the rest of theHodges family tree. Bob Hodges.
Hi Bob, I always appreciate your research and would like to contribute what informationI can to the cause. I list the William who married Mary Lax as a son of Thomas and Susanna (Bomar) Hodges. I haven't seen any of them in Giles Co. but they moved to Hart Co. and La Rue Co., Ky. and Grainger and Claiborn Co.'s TN. (Following are Lax/Hodge(s) marriages in Va.) William Hodges. md Mary Lax December 30, 1805 in Halifax Co. Va. Barsheba Hodge & John Lax, Dec 7, 1805 Mary Hodge & Royal Lax, Dec 17, 1805 Following is some data that I found which was done by another researcher. As you probably know, Knox Co. was formed in 1800 and Clay was formed from Knox in 1807. I suspect (no proof yet) that many of the HODGEs in Clay county were the children of Meshach HODGE (aka: Meshack or Mashack or Meshie or Mashac HODGES) who was born bef. 1766 in VA. So far I believe he is the father of the 10 children shown below: MESHACH HODGE (aka: Meshack or Mashack or Meshie or Mashac HODGES) was born Bef. 1766 in VA. Notes for JAMES HODGES: "HODGE, James CLY 115 and KNX 292 and WRN 71A" <Index To The 1820 Census of Kentucky compiled by Jeanne Robey Felldin and Gloria Kay Vandiver Inman, pg 12> There are three James HODGEs shown on the 1820 census. The first was shown on sheet 115 as residing in Clay county Kentucky. The second was shown on sheet 292 as residing in Knox; the third was shown on the first unnumbered sheet following sheet 71 as residing in Warren county. It is most probable that our James HODGE was the one shown in Clay county as that is where the only "Mashack" was listed and our James had a son Meshack HODGE. On the 1860 census for Laurel county KY living in the home of John SOUTHERLAND are listed Alfred SOUTHERLAND (John's brother), Frances (their mother), and James HODGES (Alfred's father-in-law age 80, born in Virginia). Edward HODGES is listed in 1860 as being idiotic and at home with Polly, his mother. It may be that Edward was an epileptic, as this was the thought of people in that age.
