    1. [HODGES-L] Hodges of Grainger County, TN
    2. Sue Maxwell
    3. Ken, I think we did correspond at one time. Here is what I have gotten from Lloyd Ellis. "Here is what I have on Martha Hodges. est b. 1725-30 Lunenburg County, VA. Father possibly William Welcome Hodges. She marries ca 1750 Rev. William Murphy, Baptist minister (in Augusta Co., VA ?). Their children were John, Keziah, William & Joseph. She dies in the 1760`s. Rev. William Murphy 2nd marriage ca 1764 to Sarah Barton. He lived and was buried 1799 in Grainger County, TN. Lloyd Ellis" I also descend from this Martha Hodge also (guess I have Hodge's all over the place) as William Murphy's granddaughter Mary R. Murphy married Samuel Worthington and moved to Bledsoe County, TN. This is my line of Worthington's from Samuel Worthington and Mary Murphy William Worthington & Margaret Brown Mary France Worthington m. Blackmon Ligon Shirley and had Hester Ann Shirley m. George W. Clingan and they had Emma Kitty Clingan my grandmother. Anyway back to William Murphy Sr. married 2nd Sarah Barton. Sarah's sister Elizabeth Barton said to have married Ambrose Hodge. as you stated in your message: "Hi Sue, I believe we have corresponded previously on the Ambrose Hodge in Grainger Co., TN prior to 1804. As you probably know, there were two by that name. The elder Ambrose was born circa 1745, probably in Ireland. He married Elizabeth Barton b. 11/20/1751 Frederick, Md., in c 1765 in Franklin Co., Va. and moved to Washington Co., TN in 1774. He later moved to the Grainger area c 179x. His brother is believed (based on a letter by an early Tn. historian) to be Francis Hodge I of Sullivan Co. TN. [src. Isaac Barton's Bible, John Fain Anderson letter]" ********** So as you stated we have connections to both Ambrose and William Welcome Hodge in Grainger County, TN. I am however leaning toward William Welcome Hodge being father of my Jesse Hodge. Keep in mind I said leaning. These are the Hodges I have connected to my Jesse Hodge of Grainger County. Descendants of William Welcome??? Hodge and (---) (---) 1. William Welcome???1 Hodge , born 1740. He married unknown. Children of William Welcome??? Hodge were as follows: 2 i Welcome Hodge , born 1776. He married on 17 Dec 1808 in Grainger Co, Tn Elizabeth Corruthers . Notes: Bond: James Hodge 3 ii Moses Hodge , born 1777. He married on 11 Aug 1797 in Grainger Co, Tn Delila Ivey , daughter of Henry Ivey and Jane Howell . Notes: Marriage: Welcome Hodge as Bondsman 4 iii Jesse Hodge , born abt 1783 in NC; died 1838 in Grainger County, TN. He married Anna Daniel. 5 iv Lucy Hodge , born abt 1785. She married on 11 May 1802 in Grainger Co, Tn John Holt . Notes: Bond John Holt 6 v James C. Hodge , born 1786. He married Margaret "Peggy" Morgan . 7 vi Rebecca Hodge , born abt 1788. She married Joseph Daniel . 8 vii Phillip Hodge , born abt 1792. He married on 18 Jan 1814 in Grainger Co, Tn Candis Howell , born abt 1794. Bond Jesse Hodge ********* Note on the marriage of first child listed is Welcom Hodge m. Elizabeth Carruthers. Bond James Hodge. This is James C. Hodge, Sr. who married Peggy Morgan. She was the daughter of Valentine Morgan of Grainger County. This is the line I followed and researched for years before Larry Hodge found proof that my James C. Hodge Jr. was the son of Jesse. during that time period Jr. and Sr. did not always refer to father and son as we believe. But usually Uncle and nephew which is the case here. child #2 Moses Hodge bond by Welcom Hodge. (this connects Moses to Welcom & James. child #3 Jesse Hodge m. Ann Daniel. Larry found this marriage record. He names a son James C. Hodge, Jr. child #4 Lucy Hodge. I don't remember why I have her listed child #5 James C Hodge. Bondsman to Welcome Hodge. child #6 Rebecca Hodge married Joseph Daniel. Joseph Daniel was a brother to Anna Daniel who married Jesse Hodge. Rebecca & Jesse probably brother and sister. child #7 Phillip Hodge married Candis Howell. Bondsman was Jesse Hodge. Probably his brother. There is also a family of Hodge's in Surry County, NC named Bartholmew Hodge b. 1752 d 1826 said to be son of Welcom William Hodge also names a son James C. Hodge b. 21 Dec 1786 . This name seems to be well connected to the William Welcome Hodge. I realize it is no proof but give me reason to follow that line of research. I also have to give my thanks to Larry L. Hodge for his diligent research on the Jesse Hodge and Samuel Pollard family of Grainger County. Much of what he shared with me. Last I heard he was working on the land records of Grainger County, TN. You have also been very generous with your work. 3. Hi Sue, I plan to respond to your whole note but first let me start with the Hodges of Surry Co., NC. I've researched all of these due to the similarity of names and the mention of an Ambrose on the 1790 census. One point is they used the name Hodges not Hodge, although one later line did start using Hodge [HUBBARD MC KINLEY HODGE, b: July 10, 1902 in SURRY CO. NC]. Bartholomew did have a son James but not James C., James C. Hodges seems to have some connection to this William Hodges line but I'm not sure how. 1 Bartholomew HODGES b: Abt. 1760 d: Abt. 1831 in Surry Co., NC .. +ELIZABETH// b: Abt. 1765 md: Abt. 1780 d: Abt. 1831 in Surry Co., NC James C. I Bartholomew Hodges being of sound mind and memory, knowing the certainty of death, and the uncertainty of life, do make and constitute this my last will and testament revoking all others heretofore by me made . First I will and bequeath to my wife Elizabeth Hodges all the property both real and personal of which I am now possessed during her life or widowhood and at her death or second marriage to be equally divided between all my children and their legal representative. Secondly, I will to my son James Hodges one hundred dollars in trade which I conceive will be equal to what I have given those of my children who have left me. Thirdly, I will and bequeath to my youngest daughter Rachel two cows and calves , one feather bed & furniture, one sow & piggs, And lastly, by these presents I constitute and appointed Drury Hodges & Moses Hodges my executors July 4th 1826. James' name also spelled Hodge in another line. 7. On 2/29/1788, Welcom Hodges transferred his right to a land warrant to Isaac Barton. (South of the Holston River on Hodges Creek) #1419, which was originally granted to Welcom on 12/2/1784. It was adjacent to Ambrose's land. On 6/30/1792, William Hodge sold 400 acres to Charles Smith in this same area. This land was part of 500 acres granted to William on 11/16/1790 by a Patent Grant. 1805 Grainger Co. Members of Capt. Their oldest child Elizabeth b 1798. It seems that Elizabeth Hodge could well be a daughter of Ambrose Hodge since he had a daughter born in 1793. The earliest record I have of Ambrose Hodge is in Washington, Co, TN where he sold 200 acres to Abram Goodpaster on 17 Nov 1785. The 1804 Grainger County Tax List shows Thomas Sharp along with John and Ambrose Hodges, and John, Moses, James and Ambrose Hodge. The 1805 Tax List shows John, Moses, and John Hodges Jr along with Thomas Sharp, as well as John, James, and Welcoms Hodge. In 1808 Ambrose, James, Welcome, Moses, and Jesse Hodges are shown, and in 1809 Moses, James, Welcome and Jesse Hodges, and John Hodge are shown. The List of Polls and Taxable Property was returned to Court by Moses Hodge Esquire for the year 1810 and included Jesse, James, and Moses Hodge, Ambrose and John Hodges, and John Hodge. Don't think they could decide whether to spell their name Hodge or Hodges. Sarah Hammons, Baxter Hammons and Martha Hammons bound as apprentices to Welcome Hodge, the girls until 18, the boys til 21.
