    1. RE: [HODGES-L] Hodges-SC
    2. Hi Linda: My suggestions would be to try to obtain the death certificate for Jerusha Hodges. It just might contain the information you are seeking. I believe death certificates were written in Louisiana preceding the 19136 death year you cite for Jerusha Hodges McDonald. you might consider searching the Louisiana death indexes to see if a death certificate can be located. 3. Dear List, I have been reading alot about the Hodges family from SC. I am the descendant of Isham Hodges -1795-SC that moved into Jones Co. MS in 1830. He was married to Mary Terrell of SC. Right now it is rumored that this Ishom had 9 children. And I am still getting information on these children. I know for a fact that John Hodges is one of them. John Hodges was born ca. 1808-SC. He first married Mary Blackledge. Then he married Trecy Blackledge. Then he married my gggrandmother Milly(last name unknown). Milly is rumored to be a Gatlin. In first researching John in the 1870 Wayne Co. Ms. Federal census. He was listed with his mother Mary and 9 children. One of these children was Wiley Robinson. Wiley was the child of Trecy Blackledge and Wiley Robinson Sr. that died during the Civil War. One of the other children that was listed was Jersusha Hodges. She was born ca. 1855 in MS. She married a McDonald and moved to La. In searching for more info in the 1880 census data in the LDS site I found Jerusha and it states that her father was born in TN. This was a big surprise sine I knew that John Hodges was born in SC. One of the researchers that is also researching my family told me that John went to court for guardianship of three children. So Jerusha may be one of the children that he raised as his own for one of his siblings. But to the best of my knowledge, I have found no evidence that John or any of his siblings ever went to TN. So my question is: How do I go about finding Jerusha's father? She died in 1936 in La. And is buried in the New Campground Cemetery. Thanks for any helps that you can give. Linda Hodge

    1. [HODGES-L] Unified Family Theory: Orange County, NC
    2. Bob Hodges
    3. I said that we needed to look more closely at the Hodge/Hodges families in Orange County North carolina. I had a chance to check on a few things, so I have a few new rcords and a little more insight into who these families were. First, a couple more early Thomas and William Hodges records March Court 1754 Thomas Hodge appointed constable for the lower part of the County. Orange County N.C. Court Minutes 1752-1761, Book 1, page 60. October Court 1754 Thomas Hodge appraiser with Richard Parker and Miles Parker of a cow and calf found by Thomas Carter. Orange County N.C. Court Minutes 1752-1761, Book 1, page 86. December Court 1756 on the complaint of William Hodges it's ordered that Thomas Noble be summoned to appear at the next court to be held for this county on the second Tuesday in March next to answer for some ill Intreatment given by him unto an Orphan Child now in his care. Orange County N.C. Court Minutes 1752-1761, Book 1, page 189. December Court 1756 A deed of sale from Bartholomew Shaddock to Henry Hodges for 200 acres of land proved by the oath of William Read and ordered recorded. Orange County N.C. Court Minutes 1752-1761, Book 1, page 191. August Court 1760 road order for the road from Collins Ford on Haw River to Hoges Ford on Deep River. Tithables include John Brantley and Moses Ginn. Orange County N.C. Court Minutes 1752-1761, Book 1, page 433. The "Henry Hodges" deed you will recognize as the same one in the deed index as Henry Shaddock to Bartholomew Hodges as follows: Dec. 14, 1756: Bartholomew Hodges to Henry Shaddock sale of 200 acres I am still inclined to think that Hodges Ford on Deep River relates to the following entry: William Hodges and William Dawson 1751 entry Bladen Co. south side of Deep River about 1 1/4 miles above its mouth and up sd river. I can't find out where Collins Ford on Haw River is. Maybe near Collins Creek in northwestern Chatham County. If so, the road runs down the Haw River. In those days, presetn day Chatham County was part of Orange and also the northern part of Lee County. The northern boundary of neighboring Moore County is the "Granville Line". This was the southern boundary of the district owned by Lord Granville. If you extended that line across present day Lee County, that would be the old boundary between Orange County and Cumberland County. If we look at the Orange County Register of Deeds, we see the following Hodge/Hodges, in addition to those I already pointed out: Aug. 14, 1759 Earl of Granville to Moses Ginn 133 acres Aug. 14, 1764 John Warren to John Hodge 100 Witness: William Chambers Aug. 14, 1764 Michael Dixon to John Hodge 55 Witness: William Chambers Feb. 10, 1767 John Dowell to John Hodge 350 acres acknowledged Jul. 26, 1768 Michael Dixon to John Hodge 30 acres acknowleged The first one I included because it appeared that the land sold by Isham Hodges of Marlboro County, S.C., on the Rocky River in Chatham County was apparently first granted to Moses Ginn. The next group of records appears to relate to the following: Apr. 20, 1771 deed of John Hodge of Orange County to Thomas Barret for L100 200 acres on Hico R. sold by Michael Dixon and John Warren to John Hodge. Orange Co. (N.C.) Deed Book 3, page 546. Hyco River (or Creek) is a tributary of the Dan River lying mostly in present-day Person County, North Carolina. This would have been in Caswell County when Caswell was split off from Orange in 1777. Person was split off from Caswell in 1791. In Person County, N.C., Deed Book C, pages 197-98, there are two deeds from Isaac, Samuel, and David Hodge conveying two tracts owned by their father John Hodge. This seems to me to shed some additional light onthe following records that I had posted earlier: Aug. 25, 1765 Mary Welch of Halifax Co. to John Hodges of Orange Co., North Carolina, for 10 pounds, 180 ac. on Br. of Wynns Cr. Bordering Watkins, McCune. Recorded Sept. 19, 1765. Wit. Peter (X) McCune, Wm Williams. Halifax Co. (Va.) Deed Book 5, page 515. Sept. 16, 1766 deed of James Warrin of Halifax Co. to John Hodg of Orange Co. for 15 pounds 125 ac. on Mill Cr. Wit. James Warrin, Timo. Warrin, John Smith, John Rodgers. Rec. Sept. 18, 1766. Halifax Co. (Va.) Deed Book 6, page 124. Sept. 18, 1766 deed of John Smith to John Hoge of Orange Co. for 15 pounds, 305 ac. on Mill Cr. John Smith by power of atty for John Smith. Wit. Esaias Harbour, Talmon Harbour, Joel Harbour. Halifax Co. (Va.) Deed Book 6, page 124. Mar. 16, 1768 John Hodge witness to Henry Dickson revocation of power of attorney. Rec. Aug. 18, 1768. Halifax Co. (Va.) Deed Book 7, page 196. Aug. 1769 deed from John Hodges of Orange Co. for 125 ac. on his creek acknowledged. Deed with several indorsements proved by the oaths of two witnesses and ordered recorded. Halifax Co. (Va.) Plea Book 6, page 247. Dec. 29, 1769 To Thomas Hodges for his maintenance - 500. Vestry Book of Antrim Parish (Halifax Co., Va.). Jan. 10, 1770 Deed of John Hodge of Orange Co., N.C., to Barnet Cearnall of Halifax Co. for 20 pounds, 195 acres waters of Winns Cr. beg. at a post oak in James Watkins line. Signed John Hodge. Wit. Ambrose Foster, James Harper, david Perryman, Wm. Robinson, Andrew Ferguson. Recorded Apr. 19, 1770. Halifax Co. (Va.) Deed Book 7, page 484. There are a number of early Orange County tax lists. Here is a link: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncorange/data/taxlist/earlytax.htm What is interesting is that no Hodge or Hodge appears in 1755. Only in 1779 do we find John, George, and William Hodge. If the John Hodge above was living on Hyco Creek, he would not have been in Orange County in 1779. I checked a book of North Carolina land entries starting in 1778. I think the reason the book starts then is that the Royal land offices closed when the Revolution started, and it took a while before the colonies established their own system. Anyway, starting in 1778, John, William and George Hodge made a number of entries on Haw River at Back Creek. This is just east of present-day Burlington, N.C. in Alamance County. I will stop there for now. More on Orange County tomorrow.

    1. Re: [HODGES-L] secret' Indina Blood Thomas Daniel Hodges
    2. LOWELL BROWN
    3. It was passed down through my Hodges line that there was Cherokee Indian in our Hodges line, but in all my research I have not found any evidence of it. I am descended from Aaron Hodges son of Isham Hodges. These are Franklin County, Virginia Hodges. I am a distant cousin of Bob Hodges who posts so very much of his research on this list. I had a contact recently from a descendant of Aaron's brother Asa Hodges who claimed Cherokee Indian in their line. I have not found any indication of the Indian in Asa's line either. One thing that does bother me though is that I have not been able to connect Aaron's wife Elizabeth Frances Markham with any of the Markham lines. Asa Hodges, Aaron's brotherm married a Chloa Marcum/Markham. I don't have proof but I have always contended they were sisters there in Franklin County, Virginia living near the Hodges family. Aaron and Elizabeth were married August 13, 1792 and Asa and Chloa were married in 1796 in Franklin County. IF there was Indian in the two brothers line it could have come thru these Markham ladies for as I mentioned earlier I have not been able to place either one of them to a Markham family. ALL other lines of marriage have been connected to family in the descendancy of Aaron and Asa Hodges. No one in mother's Hodges family knew from where the Indian blood came. I remember them only speculating as to what surname it came from. Although I seem to recall they always went back to Aaron in these conversations. 3. As most of you know that I have been trying to find my GG Grandfather 's Parents Names for several years. I have tried several different approaches, I would like to try another one. If any one of the HODGES or HODGE researchers or any one, has a Male child being born in South Carolina in or about the year of 1806, probable in Lauren's Co., or Abbeville Co., <the Old 96th Dist.> South Carolina, could you please let me know. Maybe he changed his name for some reason, I did find a John Hodges in Lauren's Co., SC having a child being in the 1810 Census with a Male child the right age to be Leroy but have no one to help me with this, Is any one kin to this John with a Richard living next door. He states on all of his Census that : Leroy H. Hodges born in 1806 Lauren's Co., SC married to: Permelia / ?? sorry no last name she was born in SC in 1802. This according to the Census. Thanks for any help. Peggy Sue O'Shields-Gaddis psueg@bellsouth.net

    1. Re: [HODGES-L] Stephen Hodges in Alabama
    2. Peggy Sue Gaddis
    3. Thanks PJ, I am not sure if this was his first or middle name, I find him in Jefferson Co., Alabama, very close to my Leroy, but I can not place him with my Leroy H. Hodges.. 3. Bob, Thanks for the reply. Let me ask you this question regarding your guess as to Thomas being the father of Isham. If that were the case don't you think that Isham would have named one of his son's Thomas? Only Edmund, John and Isham jr. were named in his will. None of these three men named a son Thomas yet both Edmund and John named sons William and John? I may be making a trip through Orange County NC this month and will try to do some more research. 3. Hi... I was wondering in the long unified theories on the John Hodges and William Hodges families....did anyone have any mention of William Henry Hodges who was married to Ann Blitch and Hannah Colson? I didn't catch if anyone wrote about this one and who his actual parents were.....Were they John and Tabitha or John and Polly? I probably posted my Hodges family connection before...but I am posting this again....in hopes someone can help in more info on this side of the family... Stephanie Grohol, daughter of Donnie Lee Hodges and Carroll W. McPherson Jr. Married Joseph B. Grohol Jr Donnie Lee was the daughter of Clifford Hodges(Feb 22, 1904-Dec 18, 1973, Macclenny, FL) and Allie Hersey(April 11, 1911, GA-April 1, 1975, Macclenny, FL) Clifford Hodges was the son of Joshua Hodges(June 1866 Charlton Co., GA-Before 1920 in Baker Co., FL) and Courtney Victoria Crews(06 Jul 1870, Charlton Co., GA -22 Dec 1949, Baker Co., FL) Joshua was the son of Willis Aaron Hodges(01 Aug 1812, Reidsville, Tattnall Co., Ga, -17 Aug 1886 in Moniac, Charlton Co., GA) and Mahalia Johns Willis was the son of William Henry Hodges(19 Jun 1770 in Kinston, North Carolina -24 Aug 1849 in Tattnall Co. 3. Peggy, do you have any clue as to what the "H" is for in Leroy's name? Is it possible he may have been listed under his middle name or by initials only in some documents? This is probably a long shot and I'm sure you have probably already pursued this line of thinking.......just thought I would ask. I'm still looking through all my Hodges info for him. 3. Kathy and all researchers: On all of the Census Records and even on all of the Land Records Leroy had the same name Leroy H. Hodges, and no we do not know what the "H" stands for. so far I have not even seen an "H" in any of his Children's names either.. I have seen the names of Harrison and Henry several times in the Hodges Family, But I just do not know about Leroy's middle name. Any HELP will be very much appreciated. Thanks for your email. 1. RE: [HODGES-L] Unified Family Theory 2003: The William Problem
    2. 1820 Pike County, MS Census: 4 Hodges recorded there: Edmond, Jesse, Sydney and William Hodges 1820 Wayne Co., MS Census: Recorded there is Thomas Hodges One William Hodges signed a 1802 Mississippi Territory Petition: believe this is probably the Petition relative to land titles prior to the 1804-1805 Land Commission hearings. It might also be the Petition from residents of the Chickasawhey River (later Wayne Co., MS formed in 1809). Prior to 1809, there were only two counties in what was to become AL; Washington County formed in 1800 (the first county) and Madison County on the Ala.-Tenn. State line. Also formed in 1809 were Baldwin Co., AL and Clarke Co., AL. Next were, if memory serves, Monroe and Conecuh Counties. When Sumpter Co. was formed (can't recall the date) it contained all that area which is contained in present day Choctaw County, formed in 1848-49. Later, Kaye

    1. RE: [HODGES-L] Unified Family Theory 2003: Philemon Hodges
    2. Another William to add to the mix: My ancestor is William ELIAS Hodges m. Elizabeth Dubose; called Elias and so reflected in records. We obtain his full name from his con's gravestone in TX. At least two of his sons were born in SC and he was resident for some time in Jefferson County, GA before removing to Conecuh County, AL where he, his son Elias, Jr. (who returned to Jefferson Co, GA) AND Philemon Hodges are found in the tax rolls in 1819 and the 1820 Conecuh County, AL Census. ============================== 1820 Cumberland County, NC Census Records Pg. 148: James Hodges Pg. 149: Col. John Hodges Pg. 156: Philemon Hodges: This is Philemon b. 7-9-1795, son of Joseph Hodges & Sarah who appear to be living with him. This Philemon was Veteran of War of 1812. New Hanover Co., NC Muster Roll 1812-1814; Third Regiment, Moore's NC Militia. Rank Induction: Corporal and Rank Discharge: Ensign. He was Philemon H. (or S.) Hodges. In 1820 he had young wife and a daughter under 10 years of age. Pg. 158: Joel Hodge Pg. 162: William Hodges; Overseer for B. W. Williams Pg 170: Jesse Hodge ============================ I've traced Rev. War Sol. Philemon Hodges as follows: Possibly the Philemon Hodges of 1910 Cumberland Co., NC Census 1820 Conecuh County, AL: Philemon Hodges b. 1760-1770 (same age range as our ELIAS Hodges) 1830 Green County, AL; Pg 410: Philemon Hodges age 60/70 born 1760-1770, a Widower. Also resident in the household is one Philemon Hodges, age 30-40 (b. 3-7-1797) and his wife Eliza Ann Caroline Brewer who he married 15 Feb. 1828 in Marengo County, LA [we're all aware that, RWS Philemon Hodges had son Samuel Kitrell Hodges who lived in Muscogee Co., GA. He also had son, Philemon b. 3-7-1797 and son named John b.1787 - d. 1832. This John Hodges married 4/18/1819 Winifred Turner b. ~1783, who married (2) James Campbell). 1832 GEORGIA Land Lottery: Muscogee Co., GA: Resident in Few's (Ignatiaus Few) District; Drew as RWS; drew Lot 173, 25th Dist., 2nd Section, Cherokee Co., GA. 1840 Muscogee Co., GA: RWS Pensioners List, age 83. He resided with his son, the Rev. Samuel Kitrell Hodges who died on or about 8 October 1840, Muscogee Co. 1840 Sumpter Co., AL; Pg. 153: Philemon Hodges (b. 3-7-3797) age 40/50, wife 30/40 with one son (10-15) and 2 daughters (1 age 5-10 and 1 under age 5). The last record I find for this Philemon Hodges is Dec. 15, 1841, where Philemon Hodges of Sumpter co., AL purchased, as assignee of Archibald M. Griffin , 2 parcels of land in Kemper Co., MS. Also, 1 December 1831, Philemon Hodges of Greene County, AL purchased, as assignee of John Nelson and James McDonald, an 80 acre tract of land in Hale County, AL. He also made three other purchases in Sumpter Co., AL in 1837 and 1839. ============================================= Our Elias Hodges was resident in Conecuh County, AL from 1819 until after the 1840 Census. He died sometime between 1840 and 1850. His brother-in-law married Elizabeth Hodges and resided in Baldwin Co., GA until after her death (sometime after 1824) when he removed to Conecuh County, AL where he is enumerated in 1830 with his second wife Dorcas. (We have family letters which identify Aunt Dorcas Duboss marrying in 1839 her second husband, Archibald Glidewell who was first married to Betsy Jones). There is an Abram Jones also resident of Conecuh-Covington, identified in the letters as Uncle Abram (Abraham) Jones who d. 1839. He connects with the Hodges Line or the Dubose Line; just don't know which yet. Now, this Elias Hodges, and his wife Elizabeth Dubose, were related to the Hodges and Dubose families of Washington County, GA. Two of his sons, Elias Hodges, Jr. and Richard Hodges both lived and died in Jefferson County, GA where their estates were probated. Their brother, George Hodges was co-executor of both his brother's estates. He resided in Washington Co., GA in 1820, Jackson Co., FL in 1830 and from 1840 until his death (bet. 1840-1850 if memory serves) he was resident in Barbour County, AL. Several Dubose families were also resident in Barbour County. Believe our William ELIAS Hodges connects back to Elias HODGES the 2nd who removed from NC to SC where he died. This line, I believe, traces back to Elias Hodges, son of Robert Hodges. Had initially felt that RWS Philemon Hodges and our Elias might be brothers. Now feel they're probably cousins. Haven't absorbed all of the info that has been shared on the list these last two weeks. I would welcome any insight if anyone sees anything familiar from the NC, SC, to GA migrations. Thanks Kaye

    3. Elijah, Thanks for your email, I am not sure where in Laurnes Co., Leroy was from, he just stated on all of the Census that he was born in Laurnes Co., SC, even when he got to Alabama in the 1850 and 1860's. He would say that he was born in 1906 in Laurnes Co., SC. I have had several people that has help me do Census Look Up and they all say the same. But, I have not had any one saying that they had a Leroy in their files either. I have Leroy in Laurens Co., in 1810, 1820 and 1830, and he was on the census in Abbeville Co. the Old 96th Dist. for the 1840 Census. I still would like to know more about the John and Richard Hodges that was in the Laurens Co., Living next door to each other, Census for 1800, 1810, 1820 and 1830, on the 1810 John had a male child that could have been the right age for Leroy, and in the 1830 Leroy live not to far away. Thanks for any help and information that you have. From Leroy until now there are a lot of the same names that you all have been mentioning, so I do feel like Leroy does belong some place in some of the last few days of the Hodges that you all have been talking about. Leroy H. Hodges was my GG Grandfather, born in 1806 Laurnes Co., SC Thomas Daniel Hodges was my G Grandfather, was born in 1839 in Abbeville. Charles Wesley <Wess> Hodges was born in Jefferson Co., Alabama. 3. Peggy, Can you tell us where in Laurens County, SC Leroy was married. If you pull out your Rand McNalley you will see that Waterloo is an easy ride from Hodges, SC. Waterloo is in Laurens and is all but right across the creek from Hodges. Laurens County might have had a special attraction to a Honeymooning couple, a Hotel with a special Suite or some early resort. I'd put all my money on your Leroy coming from the North Eastern part of Abbeville Dist, SC where I believe that two, or three related Hodges moved about 1756. I don't believe you will find a relationship in Laurens County. More research on the names of children in Abbeville Dist, SC should bear fruit. 3. BJ Thanks, I am trying to find any connection to any HODGES in Laurens Co., SC in the early 1800's. By any chance do you have a Stephen Hodges from Tennessee that came into Jefferson Co., ALA?
