Greenwood County, or parts of it, used to be in the old Abbeville Dist, and the 96th Dist. before that. Hodges, South Carolina is now in Greenwood County. Abbeville County is on the West side, and Laurens County is on the East side of Greenwood County. Hodges is in the middle. Greenwood is the largest City between Greenville and Columbia. Hodges is almost right in the middle between Abbeville, Abbeville Co, and Laurens, Laurens Co. There is a little town South East of Greenwood called "Ninety Six." It is all in easy reach of the Columbia Airport, and there are plenty of accommodations in the area. The three counties have court houses and historic societies, land records, church records and military records. It might be a good idea to spend a few weeks down there trying to tie all the Hodges together. It appears that there were two or three different families. However, because my ancestor Richard was killed early, we do not have a record connecting my ancestor to the other Hodges, or the others to the others, if you know what I mean. Records aren't the first priority on a fronteer. We may never find the whole truth, but I believe that there is information still out there. It also seems to me that almost everyone has focused on Abbeville because it was the seat of government two hundred years ago. I am willing to bet that there are records in Greenwood Co, and Laurens Co that haven't been explored as well. Eventually I will be back to Ft. Jackson for another eight weeks of fun and games. During the off hours I intend to explore a little larger area around Hodges, SC. Gerry, This John, listed in the Moragnes In America, is incorrectly named, and the listing in this book caused many years of pain in misdirected searching by hundreds of genealogists, both professional and amateurs. The John in said book turns out to be Richard Hodges who married Elizabeth Jones in Virginia. They later moved to South Carolina where Richard was killed by Indians during the historic uprising caused by the selling of Indian lands in Western South Carolina by a gentleman from England known as "The Jew." The family is well documented. I believe that many of the Hodges from the surrounding country was probably related to Richard. It would account for the reason some of them moved to the 96th district after becoming adults. The Hodges family that stayed in the 96th District became powerful, and might have had influence in helping other family members get jobs. My ancestors moved to Tennessee, then Kentucky, and later to South Eastern Indiana. The family that moved to Indiana is well documented, as are many of their descendants. My family descended from William, then Gabriel, who ran an underground railroad. Gabriel moved his family to Missouri after some of his cousins moved there. Tradition has it that he barely escaped slave catchers getting out of Indiana. The little proof I have shows Gabriel walking over a hundred miles to borrow money to buy a second farm in remote Northern Missouri. The told his family in Eastern Missouri that he was going to use the farm to run slaves North! My grandfather wrote his own life story and tells that his grandfather Gabriel ran an underground railroad. The book Moragnes In America was wrong about some of the family history, and I have stopped relying upon it for information about the Hodges family. I do hope you are able to make a connection for your ancestor. The bounderies did change during the nineteenth century. Abbeville and Hodges South Carolina are in different counties now. If you get a chance take the trip. Gerry, have you ever come across a John N. Hodges born around 1815 in SC and moved to Limestone Co., Texas? Ann - I just moved here, 17 Feb 2003, to be exact. That was the closing date on our home. We previously lived in Houston. My grandparents were moved around like gypsies by the oil company that employed my grandfather. He was from Matagorda County, TX and had moved there about 1897 from Stonewall Co., TX where his Grandfather was one of the county commissioners when Stonewall county was formed (about 1882). Grandpa, Dennis Newton Hodges, had moved from Itawamba Co., Miss about 1868 to Johnson County, TX (about 30 miles SW of Dallas) after serving as a LT in the 10th & later the 12th MS Cav during the Civil War. My father was also an oil field production worker so we moved a lot also. I mostly lived in and around Jefferson County (county seat: Beaumont). I did have a great-aunt who lived in Corpus until she died 17 Aug 1964 and she had moved to Corpus about 1947; however, her name was Gertrude "Trudy" E. Hodges Hicks. You can see some of my "pedigree" on our website which is www.hackley.com.; at near the bottom of the left frame, click on genealogy, then click on HODGES. Some photos are also there. Good luck. Dear Gerry Hackley, I did not realize you live in Corpus Christi. My grandfather, Daniel Franklin Hodges lived there with his family, including my grandmother, Daisy Hodges, my mother, Lucile Hodges and my aunt, Byrda Hodges. I would guess the girls were about 12 and 14 at the time, maybe a couple of years older. That was back in the early 1900's and they lived in Corpus Christi about a year and a half, then moved back to southern Illinois. I have always wondered whether there were Hodges relatives living in Corpus Christi at the time and that was the reason they had moved to Texas. Were your Hodges ancestors in Corpus Christi at that time? If so, I wonder if there was a connection. Gerry, I do keep hearing about this John Hodges, but can not connect him to the John Hodges that I am hutting. Do you happen to know any thing else about the children of the son of the Col. Hodges, by the name of John Hodges born in VA.? My GG Grandfather, Leroy H. Hodges born in 1806 in Laurens Co., SC, did move from Laurens Co., into Abbeville , the Old 96th Dist., SC , Leroy stayed and moved into Jefferson Co., Alabama by the 1850's. Peggy - The book, Moragnes in America and Related Families by Nell Hodges Howard and Bessie W. Quinn does not show a LeRoy Hodges in the index. The families in this book have been researched by a number of contributors to this list, one in particular is Al Metts and perhaps you should look at his contributions to this list in the archives. He has not made any postings in quite some time. I do not know if he is still alive as I believe that he is either in his late 70's or early 80's now. He is still shown in the San Antonio phone book but I did not get an answer or a machine the last time I was there. That was late Dec. 2001 or Jan. 2002 so he may have been visiting family or out of town for something. Hi... This is what I have on my Hodges line....I will start with me and work on down... Stephanie McPherson married Joseph Grohol Jr Donnie Lee Hodges married Walter McPherson Clifford Hodges married Allie Hersey Joshua (Sometimes also named John) Hodges married Courtney Victoria Crews (daughter of Archibald Graham and Honor C. Bradley Crews) Willis Aaron Hodges married Mahalia Johns and after she died he married Basheba Heath Gainey. All in all, Willis had 17 children. William Henry Hodges (1770-1849) married Ann Blitch and then after she died he married Hannah Colson. He had all together 10 children(6 with Ann and 4 with Hannah) This is where it gets a bit confusing....no one really knows who William's parents are..some say it is John Robert and Tabitha Little(Which is what I now believe) or John and Polly Smith. John's parents were Richard and Sarah Hodges. So that is what I have....what I have is that my Hodges line originated from Lenoir Co, NC and moved to GA..settling Lowndes Co, and later some stayed and the rest eventually moved to Tattnall County, GA. By the time Joshua was born, he was born in Charlton County, GA before eventually moving to Baker County, FL. I do have a Newton...her name was Sarah Ann Newton and she married James Hodges who was the son of John Robert Hodges Jr and Tabby. So that is what I have.... Stephanie
Was this John and Richard HODGES ever in Laurens Co., SC? And if so what time frame?
