I tend to agree with Ms. Young in this discussion: Below are 2 sites that may prove interesting: You may also wish to muck about in Jamestown VA. Old Dominion University Libraries: Special Collections At http://www.lib.odu.edu/aboutlib/spccol/hodges.shtml Which in part states The Hodges family arrived in America in the first half of the seventeenth century. Once again we see an author who states and or implies the beginning of the HODGES in America. Additionally, you may find http://www.apva.org/resource/jjrc/vol1/blanton.pdf An interesting document: Ill leave the Beginning for others to determine: Unless I find solid documentation of the facts. Thank you for your quick response! You asked for more info on Tabitha. This might get to be a long story but here goes: I am researching the Carrs from Halifax Co., VA. William Carr married Tabitha (no last name). However, I have long suspected that she might be a Hodges, because one of their sons was named William H. Carr and also that Tabitha's husband William bought land on Bradley Creek in 1777 from James Hodges. This was part of an original grant from George 2nd King of England to James Hodges. James disappeared several years after William Carr bought the property and it was only recently that I found James Hodges' Will abstract online. Since other names in the will, Glass and Shaw, are connected to Halifax Co, VA , I thought this might be the James Hodges from Halifax, VA. I also read James left ten shillings to Tabby and immediately thought this might be my clue to "Tabitha". As we all know, this might not be the case at all, but it sure is worth pursuing. I also saw the Chancery Case of William Carr vs William Glass et al that you sent me. Again this further peeks my interest. Why is William Carr in Chancery against all the heir of James Hodges? Is he looking for more money from the estate of James? I went to the Library of Virginia trying to find "anything". There are two chancery cases, but nothing in detail on either case. The only thing that I found was that it was ordered to be posted at the court house and in the newspaper for a period of two months. I tried to find it in the newspapers, but that time frame does not complete issues of newspapers. I am hoping that there is more information in Newberry Co on this chancery case, but I haven't written the archives to ask. I am guessing that James was at least 21 when he got the grant from the king. That would place him in the 1727 time frame for his birth. I am guessing that Tabitha was born abt. 1755/65 and that she and William Carr were married around 1779. I know this is all supposition, but I have been working on this line for about 14 years and this is the first clue I have found on Tabitha's maiden name. Any suggestions? Again thank you for your interest. Julia

Hello cousin, Jimmy! Yes, the years were pretty well rounded out because of when and where some of Richard and Sarah's children were married, and by where the grandchildren were born. All of their children, and some of the grandchildren were born in Abbeville Dist, SC. Richard moved what was left of his family to first Tennessee in about 1810. Then to Kentucky about 1812, and on to Ripley Co, Indiana about 1814. The goal was Indiana. He had been commissioned by the Baptist Church to go to the wilderness of Indiana and hold meetings in his home there until an ordained minister could be sent to the region. I do not know why he spent so much time in Tennessee and Kentucky. I suspect it was because the roads were all but non-existent and they were moving by wagon through wilderness and mountainous terrain. I don't know the story, but two of his daughters married Connell brothers who were born in Kentucky. I strongly suspect these two young men were recruited to help the family move to Indiana and stayed. They were married in Ripley Co, Indiana. Richard and Sarah had grandchildren in the Abbeville Dist, SC before they left for the wilderness. A note about the Pioneers. All who settled the 96th Dist, Abbeville Dist, SC in the 1760's and 1770's were pioneers. That includes all of the children. Richard and Elizabeth and their family were pioneers. Richard and Sarah and their families were pioneers to Indiana. Richard fought in the revolutionary war, as did at least two of his younger brothers. Richard and Sarah's son William died age 33 in Indiana. His son Gabriel was running an underground railway and was forced to pioneer to Northern Missouri in 1842. Gabriel's first child Robert Walker Hodges fought in the Civil War for the North. He moved his family to the wilds of Kansas in the 1880's, and then to the wilderness of Southern Missouri in later years. The Kansas State Historical Society wants a copy of my grandfather's life story. I'm still re-writing it. Other lines have had politicians, doctors and military officers of some note. I think the Hodges family as a whole was and is a great one! I noticed a posting recently that mentioned three Hodges names as being in the Abbeville, SC census of 1790. Per an index I found there were five Hodges Heads of Household in Abbeville. I show there were twelve Hodges listed as Head of Household in all of SC. All reference Microfilm Roll No. M637-11 which I presume is the NARA microfilm number. Names below are shown as in the index and I have included the census data for each household. For any who might not be familiar with the 1790 and early 1800s census records, the numbers taken were primarily for purposes of taxation and congressional representation and a whole lot of data wasn't needed. So we don't get names, ages or any other good stuff about the other members of the families. The census data numbers in order indicate the number of free white males 16 years of age and older, number of free white males under 16, number of free white females including head of household if Head was female, number of all other free persons living in the household, and number of slaves. We know she was still alive at this time because her will wasn't written until 1999. A transcript of her will I received courtesy of Al Metts is posted below. Before me this 7th signed Samuel Anderson October 1816 Tal Livingston Q at D The Richard Hodges listed could be her son, the Richard that married Sarah F. Rosamond, and later moved to Versailles, Ripley County, Indiana. Elijah - Do you know what year Richard and Sarah Rosamond Hodges went off to Indiana?? Altrnatively, this could be Richard A. Hodges whose estate was administered in 1843 who was married to Phebe Dunn. However, I favor the first alternative since Richard A. Hodges left three minor children James, John and Charles who were put under the guardianship of Andrew Dunn in 1845. Jno. Hodges is in all likelihood the John Hodges that married first Margaret Long, and after her death at an early age, married second Frances Anderson. This is the John Hodges who served under Capt. Samuel Rosamond in the Revolutionary War. Capt. Samuel Rosamnd was married to Sarah Hodges, a sister to Richard. And a sister to the Dorathy Hodges mentioned in the Moragne book as being taken by the Indians. This Dorathy Hodges according to the book later returned and married a Rosemond man. The most likely prospect for her husband would have to be Capt. Samuel's brother James Rosamond, however there are items in the report that would preclude this. Also, of interest regarding James Rosamond is that in his will (dated 1806) he leaves a horse to his wife's son James Doherty. I suspect this James Doherty and the James Doughtary that is a witness to Elizabeth Jones Hodges will above are one and the same individual. I suspect that the William Hodges and the James Hodges listed are those who were later involved in founding the Old Walnut Creek Baptist Church on Mulberry Creek. The records of this church were reprinted in a series of newpaper articles(Our Old Roads) written by Harry Legare Watson, which were the basis for much of the information on the Hodges family and others in his daughter Margaret Watson's book, "Greenwood County Sketches (Old Roads and Early Families)". The entire series of articles is available for viewing a the South Carolinian Library at the college in Columbia, SC. I have transcripts of some of these but not nearly all. If you haven't seen this book, check it out. Hodges data is on pages 259-267. Thats it for me for now. Jimmy Rosamond jdrosamond@adelphia.net

Elijah - I would like to spend a few weeks in Abbeville, Laurens Co., etc. I have been to Hodges, SC and some of the areas near there; however, I had my husband with me and he was anxious to go play golf with his son-in-law or something and as usual, my wishes were rushed delegated into the back- ground. Next time, I am there, I will try to go off by myself. Our daughter & family are now living in Clemson again so perhaps this fall I will have the opportunity to return there and research and/or spend some time with our grandchildren. I am aware that Al Metts said there were errors in the book; however, he did not say what they were. I am certain that it will take some time to sort out all the proper HODGES as there were many families in that area. Your theories may be correct. If we keep digging, I feel certain we will find the answer. I see no mention of my Isaac HODGES and Rebecca McClain in the Moragnes book, however, Rebecca Hodges may have been the daughter of the HOWARD family. Rebecca had a sister, Sarah or Sara McClain who married Edmund Hodges so it was a case of sisters marrying brothers and that has happened a lot in my family. Some of my lines with photos are on our website which is www.hackley.com. What is it that takes you to Fort Jackson for 8 weeks???? The Moragnes book mentions the story of the Hodges family being attacked by indians and one of the daughters being taken by one of the chiefs as his wife. The name of their son is never mentioned. I wondered if he used the name of Hodges. My GGG Grandfather, Isaac Hodges was born 1790 in Abbeville dist. as were so many other HODGES. I thought there were only 3 Hodges in Abbeville during the time of the 1790 Federal Census, namely, John, Drury and Isaac. Wonder where Richard come in???
