    1. [HODGES-L] Obit on Mahala Hodges, wife of Thompson Hodges, Benton County, AL
    2. Hello! I joined the list today in order to get this obituary to the right person or persons. I visited my local library today. While reading a book called Marriage and Death Notices From the South Western Baptist Newspaper, I came across a great obit on Mahala Hodges, the wife of Thompson Hodges. She died in Benton County, AL on 10-23-1856. If there are any of her descendants on this list, please contact me. I will be glad to send you a scanned copy of the obituary. I would dearly love to find something like this on one of my ancestors!! Debbie

    3. Thanks to all who replied to my post about Creed Clay Hodges. I know he was born in Sumner County, TN in 1826 after his father Ezekiel had migrated from Franklin County, VA with the whole family some years earlier. (You can read about this in Juanita Patton's book.) Creed married Caroline Gray (who was four years older than he was) on February 16, 1849 in Sumner County. They had a bunch of children, the first few born in Sumner County, others born in Illinois. (They are 5th generation from Isham Hodges.) 5 George Hodges 1851 - Unknown .......... 5 Rebecca Hodges 1853 - Unknown b in IL, USA .......... 5 William J.E.Hodges 1855 -1922 b in IL, died in TX .......... 5 Adaline Hodges 1859 - Unknown b Sumner,TN ......... 5 Andrew J. 1861 - Unknown born IL ............5 Thomas J. 1863 - Unknown born IL ............5 Daniel Franklin 1865 - 1937 b. Saline Co. IL died in PA It looks as though they were back and forth between Tennessee and Illinois, although I know the youngest child (my grandfather) went through the schools in Galatia, Illinois, so they were there quite a while. I just don't have any proof where anyone went except William J.E. who went to Texas and Daniel Franklin who stayed in Illinois until 1932, then came to PA and died 5 years later. Ann

    1. [HODGES-L] 1880 and 1900 Census
    2. Ann Gasser
    3. To all: I recently learned some more about my Creed Clay Hodges family ancestors and heard from two descendants of his son William J.E. Hodges. I now know that William (my grandfather's brother) moved to Texas around 1900 and I am trying to find out where his siblings located--or did they stay in Illinois? I also would like to know what happened to Creed and his wife Caroline. Did they go to Texas with some of their children? If anyone has access to the Saline County IL censuses of 1880 and 1900 would you please be so kind as to see if Creed is listed on them? He would have been about 54 in 1880 and 74 in 1900. I guess there is no 1890 census which might have been more helpful determining where this family went. Even if they were still in Illinois in 1880, they could have left after that. Thanks, Ann Gasser

    1. [HODGES-L] obituary John H. HODGES from newspaper of Perry, Houston Co., GA - March 18, 1926
    2. Gerry Hackley
    3. The following obituary is from the newspaper of Perry, Houston County, Georgia (Publisher: John L. Hodges) dated March 1926: "JOHN H. HODGES Claimed by Death ---------------- Editor of Houston Home Journal and a Leader in County Affairs for 50 years ---------------------------------------------- John H. Hodges died Thursday afternoon March 11th at his home on Evergreen Street. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the home, Rev. J. E. Barnhill, pastor of the Perry Methodist church officiating. Interment was at Evergreen Cemetary with Masonic rites. He was born September 25, 1851 and was reared to manhood and lived here nearly all his life. On January 21, 1879, he was married to Miss Kate V. Norwood of Perry. He is survived by his wife, five daughters; Mrs. T. L. Hendrix and Miss Ethel Hodges of Lakeland, Florida. Miss Teresa Hodges of Petersburg, VA and Mrs. T. D. Mason and Mrs. Sam P. Houser of Perry; also three sons, Major Courtney H. Hodges of Fort Benning, John L. Hodges of Perry and Sam N. Hodges of Atlanta, and one brother Dr. Fred S. Hodges of Jacksonville, Fla., and one sister, Mrs. O. G. Conner of Gainesville, Fla. He was a member of the Methodist church, a member of the Masonic Lodge of Perry, of which he was Secretary for a number of years. He was Mayor of Perry for several years and postmaster here under the Wilson administration. He became editor and publisher of the Houston Home Journal about 1873 and edited same up to four years ago, with the exception of a few years when he was editor and publisher of a paper in Irwinton, Ga. He was a man of strong convictions, and was a leader in public affairs of his native town and county. He was a member of the press association of the state and was held in the highest esteem by this body of representative men. His editorials were copied extensively by other papers throughout the state. He was an affectionate and kind husband and a kind and indulgent father. His life was one of devotion to his family, and his many friends throughout the county and state will mourn his loss, and miss him from the everyday walks of life. a truly, good man has gone to this reward to join these loved ones in the Eternal City, who have gone before him, watching and waiting for his coming. J. H. C. " ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- Sounds like an exceptional tribute to a very special man. I proofed my work and hope that I did not miss any errors but I was working with a badly faded copy of an old newspaper and did the best that I could. Please forgive me if I made any errors. 2. Gerry Hackley
    3. Stephanie - I don't know where you live but many libraries have books about the county they are located in as cemetary books, marriages, etc. on the county level. What I suggest you do is go to the web site, www.google.com and search for the county you want like "Tattnall County, GA" and see what you get. Or "Tattnall Georgia library" and then I would phone that library "reference desk" and request the information that I wanted or write them an email and request the information and give them your "snail mail" address. so they can copy the pages you need and the name of the publication or source. Many counties have published their local histories and I have found them excellent sources. 1. [HODGES-L] Robert Hodges died in Sumter Co., AL in 1843

    3. May I add my Robert Hodges in the mix? Robert Hodges died in Sumter Co., AL in 1843 leaving a will naming children: Allen, James and Cely Ann Hilson. There was another son, Robert Hodges, Jr., who predeceased his father. Descendants of Allen and wife, Elizabeth ___, moved on to Kemper and Lauderdale Co., MS while James moved his family to Arkansas. In the 1850 Census, James was listed as being born in 1890 in NC. Allen served in the local militia while living in Jones County, GA between 1811 and 1821. In 1821 he qualified to draw land in the Georgia Land Lottery; he drew Lot 92 in Section 5, situated in Irwin County. In the 1830 Census, Robert, Allen and James Hodges were in Autauga Co., AL. I would love to compare notes with interested persons! I have a collateral Hendrix line in Monroe County, AL. There is definitely a JONES line which connects with either my DuBose or Hodges line. I will forward a copy of this message to one of my fellow researchers who has a direct line of descent from Hannah Colson. Perhaps she may be of some assistance to you. Later, Kaye
