Hi... Yes, Oscar was Joshua Hodges oldest son.... Stephanie Grohol
Hi All: I am posting this query in the highest hopes someone out there will recognize this name. If anyone has a Corneila Hodges, Corneila Francis Hodges, or Corny, Nelle, Nelly or Neila Hodges in their tree, I would love to hear from you. I have been researching Corneila for over 4 years and cannot find a thing. All I have is what was written in a family bible: Corneila Hodges born March 1, 1863, and died September 25, 1891. She is believed to have been born in Kentucky and resided in Macon/Sumner County Tennessee with her husband John Lester Carter. She is thought to be buried in Shiloh Cemetery (Macon County, TN) in an unmarked grave. I have no idea who her parents and/or siblings are. I have been over and over the 1870 to 1880 census records and can't find a name/age remotely close to being Corneila in Macon/Sumner/Allen Counties. Nothing comes up at Ancestry.Com, nor have I had any luck with all the other records I have been through the past 4 years. It could be the i! nfo I have on her is not entirely correct, but it is all I have to work with. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you so very much for any help, suggestions you can share. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! SiteBuilder - Free, easy-to-use web site design software
Hi Bob, I always appreciate your research and would like to contribute what informationI can to the cause. I list the William who married Mary Lax as a son of Thomas and Susanna (Bomar) Hodges. I haven't seen any of them in Giles Co. but they moved to Hart Co. and La Rue Co., Ky. and Grainger and Claiborn Co.'s TN. (Following are Lax/Hodge(s) marriages in Va.) William Hodges. md Mary Lax December 30, 1805 in Halifax Co. Va. Barsheba Hodge & John Lax, Dec 7, 1805 Mary Hodge & Royal Lax, Dec 17, 1805 Following is some data that I found which was done by another researcher. As you probably know, Knox Co. was formed in 1800 and Clay was formed from Knox in 1807. The first was shown on sheet 115 as residing in Clay county Kentucky. The second was shown on sheet 292 as residing in Knox; the third was shown on the first unnumbered sheet following sheet 71 as residing in Warren county. It is most probable that our James HODGE was the one shown in Clay county as that is where the only "Mashack" was listed and our James had a son Meshack HODGE. I have just a few more thoughts to add to my Bermuda triangle posts. The one William Hodges who married a Mary born between 1770 and 1780 that I have found is William Hodges who married Mary Lax in Halifax County in 1805. The numbers fit, but could he have moved to Giles County, Virginia? I would appreciate hearing from someHalifax County researchers. James Hodges appears in the Knox County, Kentucky tax lists of 1800, 1801, 1802 (with Stephen Hodges), 1803, 1804, 1805, 1806 (with Mashac Hodges and Luther Hodges), 1808, and 1809, and in the 1810 Census (over 45 or born before 1765). In 1811, he is in the tax list for Clay County (formed in part from Knox). In the 1820 Census of Clay County, he is shown as 40-50, and in the 1830 Census, now in Laurel County, 50-60 (or born 1770-1780). If this is the same man as in the 1779 deed in Hanry County, Va., he was born by about 1758. I would appreciate any feedback thathelps connect upthe branches and twigs to the rest of theHodges family tree. Bob Hodges.

The William who turn up in Giles County in 1830, appearing to have been born between 1770 and 1780 is very early for a Hodge/Hodges in this area. I think I can identify most of the ones who came through Franklin County that early, but I don't have anything on this one. He is close in age to Isham's sons Moses, Robert, Aaron and Asa. We seem to know his wife's name, approximately when he was married and when he died, and the names of several of his children. It would seem unusual if we couldn't place him. There was a William Hodge in the Russell County tax list of 1810. But there are several other very early mystery men, one of whom may figure in this story. Shadrack and Meshack almost fall into the category, flashing briefly throughthe records of Franklin County before turning up in Tennessee and Kentucky, but there is also a very early James who turns up in Knox County, Kentucky. A James Hodge makes a very brief appearance in Franklin (or Henry, as it was then) when he witnessed a deed for the sale of a slave to Josiah Hodges June 17, 1779, signing his name with an X along with William Hodge, who did the same. A Stephen Hodges is mentioned in the estate accounts of Isham Hodges when Isham died in 1782. It is interesting that a Stephen Hodges lived in Scioto County, Ohio, in 1820, along with a Robert Hodges who appear to be his son. Here is a record mentioning his filing for a pension for service in the Revolution. HODGES, Stephen, Revolutionary War soldier; pension application filed in Scioto County, 16 August 1821, age 75, wife age 57, daughter, three grandchildren. [Common Pleas Court Journal 3, p. 184] Could he be the same Stephen? The recrod would indicate he was born about 1746. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find the pension application or any record that anyone named Stephen Hoddges ever served from Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, or Georgia (if he served from anywhere else,it seems unlikely he would be related to the Franklin County family). To the mystery list we can now add Reuben and Polly Hodge of Guilford County, North Carolina. Bob Hodges
The Grayson Prong The Grayson prong of the problem looks like this. There are a group of Hodges is Grayson who appear to be related. I don't have the details. In the 1840 Census, there is a James Hodge age 50-60. He continues to appear in the Census in Carroll Co., Va. He is a single man and I assume he does not have any descendants. Here is another: 1860 Census, Grayson Co., Va. William Hodge wm35 laborer b. Va. (b. ca. 1825). There is obviously a strong link between the Hodges and the Sextons, though, and my little bit of research into the Sextons seems to indicate that they located primarily in Grayson and Wythe Cos., Va. One though is that the Reuben of Reuben and Polly mentioned by Major in 1868 might be Reuben, son of William Hodges of Franklin County, and probably Moses Hodges' nephew. I checked the North Carolina Census of 1810 and did not find a Reuben. Reuben Hodges is listed in the personal property tax lists for Franklin Co., Va. in 1803 and 1804, 1809-16 (there are no lists for 1808), 1820, 1824, 1827-32, 1847 and 1848. Here is my summary on Reuben: Reuben Hodges b. ca. 1770 (50-60 in 1830 Census; 80 in 1850 Census 1468/1462) or 1784 (1820 and 1830 Census). m. Susan Hall (b. ca. 1780, d. [This chart will get deforamtted; the key is he is not in the 1840 Census.] 1810 1820 1830 1840 1850 1860 M 1784-1794 M 1775-1784 M1770-1780 Reubin 80 Reuben 80 M 1800-1810 M 1810-1820 M 1810-1820 M1815-1820 Heston 25 F 1784-1794 F1775-1794 F1790-1800 Susan 70 Susan 75 F 1810-1820 F1810-1815 F 1810-1820 F1815-1820 F1815-1820 So he does have a son born during the time Major was born, but we have no evidence he ever lived in Guilford County, and these records suggest his wife was named Susan. Reuben's know children in Franklin Co. were Rowland, b. ca. 1813, Judy, who married John Campbell in 1843, and probably Jane, who married Jesse Nicholas in 1843. There is much about this family that is still veiled in mystery, but if anyone has any insights on how they connect to any of our Hodge/Hodges families, I would appreciate their sharing them.
The Giles Prong The Giles County prong of the problem is this. In the 1830 census, there is a William Hodge who appears in Giles. His family is as follows: m50-60 William, b. 1770-1780 2m10-15 b. 1815-1820 2m5-10 b. 1820-1825 m<5 b. 1825-1830 f40-50 wife Mary Ann, b. 1780-1790 f10-15 b. 1815-1820 f20-30 b. 1800-1810 [The Hodge in the 1830 Census of Giles is often listed as "Philey" but looks to me like Pheby (f20-30). I think is the same Pheby Hodge in the census of neighboring Monroe Co., [West] Va. in 1820.] >From looking at the personal property tax records, it seems like a reasonable inference that William came to Giles County about , that he dies about 1838, that his wife was Mary Ann, and that Andrew, Elijah, and Gabriel are three of the five sons of William Hodge. What do we know about them? Well, Mary Ann Hodge appears in the 1840 census of Giles Co. with this lineup: m20-30 b. 1810-1820 m15-20 b. 1820-1825 m10-15 b. 1825-1830 m5-10 b. 1830-1835 m<5 b. 1835-1840 f40-50 b. 1790-1800 f20-30 b. 1810-1820 f<5 b. 1835-1840 I think this indicates one of the sons and his wife and young children living with the widow Mary Ann. Andrew appears in the 1840, 1850, and 1860 censuses of Pulaski Co., Va., usually in the community of New Bern, and his widow Cynthia is there in 1880. In 1870, he was in Montgomery Co. (Auburn Twp.). He is 20-30 in 1840 (1810-1820); 42 in 1850 (1808), 56 in 1860 (1804), 62 in 1870 (1808) and dead in 1880. Elijah was in Giles Co. in 1840 (age 20-30, with f20-30 and f<5) (b. 1810-1820); in Montgomery Co. (Blacksburg) in 1860, age 43 (1817); same in 1870, age 52 (1818), and in 1880, age 64 (1816). I don't have the 1850 Census. Gabriel may be the Gabriel in the 1880 census of Lawrence Co., Ky. (Louisa), p. , b. Va. ca. 1816, both parents b. Va., living with his son William, age 28, b. Ky. both parents b. Va. Others who may belong to this family are George Hodge in the 1840 Census of Pulaski Co., (age 30-40; b. 1800-1810); James Hodge in the 1850 Census of Pulaski Co. Va., age 45 (b. 1805); and Joseph Hodge in the 1880 Census, Montgomery Co., Va. (Christiansburg), b. ca. 1816. All we need is a William, b. 1770-1780 in Virginia, who married wife Mary Ann about 1810-15,and died about 1838, and we have the whole family. Does anybody have any idea who these people are? I have a couple of clues. I did the work on Andrew Hodge with wide Cynthia because I thought he could be the Andrew Hodges of the Franklin Co., Va. marriage bond to marry Cynthia Clowers, dau. John, Sept. 22, 1829, surety Jacob Clowers, Jr. (Wingfield, Marriage Bonds of Franklin Co., Va. 1786-1858, p. 116. The names fit. It is hard to tell much else. There are two Andrews in the personal property tax lists of Franklin Co. in 1834 and 1845. In other years, it is not possible to tell which Andrew might be referred to,but my assumption is that Andrew Hodges usually refers to the son of William Hodges who married Amey Hall in Franklin Co. in 1796,and their son Andrew born about 1795. That Andrew married Avarilla Hodges and appears to have spent his life in Franklin County. The other is the name of Elisha Hodges William's son that appears on the Franklin County lists of 1836 and 1837. Just as with Andrew and Cynthia, I have found no other reference anywhere to this man. The one in the Valley was named Elijah, but Elisha and Elijah are names regularly confused. Both are used in Franklin County (Elisha Abednego's son and Robert's sons Elisha and Elijah).
First, let's deal with Moses. We know from Franklin County records that George is his son. In the Census of 1810, his family looks like this (remember George is already on his own): m26-45 Moses b. 1765-1784 2m10-16 b. 1794-1800 f26-45 b. 1765-1784 f10-16 b. 1794-1800 3f0-10 b. 1800-1810 In 1820: m>45 Moses, b. bef. 1775 2m16-26 b. 1794-1802 (because there are no males inthe16-18 bracket) 2m10-16 b. 1804-1810 2m<10 b. 1810-1820 f10-16 b. 1804-1810 f16-26 b. 1794-1804 f26-45 b. 1775-1794 f>45 wife b. bef. 1775 If we make a few assumptions, we see that these could be the same family. Moses b. 1765-1775 son b. ca. 1794-1800 (10-16 in 1810 and 16-26 in 1820) son b. ca. 1794-1800 (10-16 in 1810 and 16-26 in 1820) son b. ca. 1804-1810 (not in 1810 and 10-16 in 1820,so might be twins b. ca. 1810) son b. ca. 1804-1810 (not in 1810 and 10-16 in 1820,so might be twins b. ca. 1810) son b. ca. 1810-1820 (not in 1810 and <10 in 1820) son b. ca. 1810-1820 (not in 1810 and <10 in 1820) wife b. 1765-1775 an unmarried daughter b. ca. 1794 (10-16 in 1810 and 26-45 in 1820) daughter b. ca. 1800-1804 (<10 in 1810 and 16-26 in 1820) daughter b. ca. 1804-1810 (<10 in 1810 and 10-16 in 1820 daughter b. ca. 1800-1810 (not in 1820, possibly infant mortality) daughter b. ca. 1810-1820 (not in 1810; <10 in 1820) With the exception of the two boys in 1820 age 10-16,this is a pretty good fit. In addition to these, there are at least three other children. One is George. George Hodges b. 1784 (16-26 in 1810, 26-45 in 1820) married Elizabeth Flowers August 25, 1808. Giles County Marriage Register 23. In 1820 I think that George is in the census of Adams Co., Ohio. A second is Ransom. Ransom appears in the Franklin Co., Va. personal property tax list of 1814. As shown above he is on the Giles County list in 1815 (both he and George are in the area that is today Mercer Co., W. Va.). He is on the Kanawha Co., Va. list in 1818. Finally he is on the Adams Co., Ohio Census with George in 1820. He appears on the 1830 and 1840 Censuses of Scioto Co., Ohio. Ransom Hodge b. ca. 1794-1800 (based on 1820, 1830 and 1840 censuses. This Ransom died in 1849. The Kanawha Trace forms a nice thread tying that pattern of residence together. The third additional child is Sally: Sally Hodge married Nimrod Smith April 7, 1807. Giles County Marriage Register 23. In the 1815 tax list of Giles County, three names in sequence are George Hodge, William Murphy, and Nimrod Smith. One last marriage record: Mose Hodges married Elizabeth Jarell, April 29, 1816. Giles County Marriage Register 26. Whether this is a son or Moses himself remarrying is a good question. Now the next little piece about Moses. He gave his age as 44 when he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1814. In the Boland Cemetery in Nile Twp., Scioto Co., Ohio is this grave: Hodges, Moses, died 20 January 1838, age 69 years, 14 days; native of Virginia. Placing him among the known ages of Isham Hodges' sons would suggest he was born 1768-1770. His enlistment record suggests he was born about 1770. His tombstone suggests he was born Jan. 6, 1769. So I think up to this point we have a fairly good fit. We can't be sure we have the same Moses in Giles in 1810 and in Grayson in1820, but it looks close. One of the mysteries about Moses is what he was doing between 1797 and 1806. In 1797 he was arrested for horse-stealing. Although he was acquitted, he may have had a reason to leave the county. The following tax records are interesting in this context: 1799: Grainger County, Tennessee, Moses Hodge 1804: Grainger County, Tennessee, Moses Hodges 1805: Grainger County, Tennessee, Moses Hodges 1802: Russell Co., Va.: Moses Hodge There was a Moses Hodge who married Delilah Ivey in Grainger Co., Tenn., Aug.11, 1797, who probably accounts for these records (it could not be Moses Hodges of Franklin Co., who was in jail at the time), but Mesheck Hodge was in Grainger in 1804, probably the same one from Franklin County.
As some of you know, I am compiling a history of the Hodges family of Franklin County, Virginia. From time to time I have posted my ideas on how the various branches of the Hodge/Hodges family relate to one another. (By the way, whose idea was it to start up a competing Hodge board? I always though one of the best things about this board was it dealt with both spellings, which do not often represent different families. I think we should keep them together). This project has caused me to venture into the Bermuda Triangle of Hodges, the area between Giles County, Va., on the north, Ashe County, N.C. on the west, and Surry County, N.C. on the east. I call this the Bermuda Triangle because it is so hard to tell where the Hodges in the area came from. They are south of the Hodge family of Bath Co., Va; west of the Hodges of Franklin and Pittsylvania Cos., Va.; east of the Hodges in southern WestVirginia; northwest of the Hodges of Surry Co., N.C.; and northeast of the Hodges of Watauga, Ashe and Alleghany Cos., N.C. Plus, the area is on the crossroads of several major migration routes. The Great Wagon Road down the Valley of Virginia into Tennessee is one. The Kanawha Trace, leading from North Carolina up the New River Valley, and down the Kanawha into Ohio is another. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~maggieoh/Migrate/merle.htm I wandered into this problem in trying to solve the riddle of what happened to Moses Hodges, the son of Isham Hodges who died in Henry (now Franklin) Co., Va. in 1782. There is a Moses Hodges in the Giles Co., Va. census of 1810. This is almost certainly my Moses. He is there with his son George, b. ca. 1784. In 1820, there is a Moses in Grayson Co., Va. Grayson is up the New River from Giles. Moses disappears from the record in Virginia in 1829. But a number of Hodge/Hodges (usually Hodge) individuals pop up in Grayson about this time. The two aspects of the problem are these: (1) Who are the Hodge individuals who show up later in Giles (and Montgomery, Pulaski and Craig Counties), and what family are they from? and (2) who are the Hodges of Grayson, and what family are they from? First the facts, then the speculation. Here is a list of personal property tax records on Moses Hodges: 1787: Franklin County, Moses Hodges [1 tithable under 21.] 1789: Franklin County, Moses Hodges [1 tithable] 1790: Franklin County, Moses Hodges [1] 1791: Franklin County, Moses Hodges [1] 1792: Franklin County, Moses Hodges [1] 1793: Franklin County, Moses Hodges [1] 1794: Franklin County, Moses Hodges [1] 1795: Franklin County, Moses Hodges [1] 1796: Franklin County, Moses Hodges [1] 1797: Franklin County, Moses Hodges [name listed but no entry.] 1798: [not listed in Franklin County] 1806: Giles County: Moses Hodges [2] 1807: Giles County,Moses Hodge [1] 1808: [no personal property tax lists for Virginia for 1808.] 1809: no record in Giles County 1810: Giles County, Moses Hodg, George Hodg 1811: Giles County, Moses Hodg, George Hodg 1812: Giles County, Moses Hogg, George Hodg 1813: Giles County, Moses Hodges 1814: not recorded in Giles County; list taken May 30, 1814. 1815: Giles County: George Hodge Ransom Hodge 1816: Giles County, Moses Hodge, George Hodge 1817: Giles County, Moses Hodges [2], George Hodges 1818: Grayson County, Moses Hodges [3] (not recorded in Giles County) 1819: Giles County, Moses Hodge 1819: Grayson County, Moses Hodge [3] 1820: Grayson County, Moses Hodge [3](not recorded in Giles) 1821: not recorded in Giles or Grayson* 1822: Giles County: Moses Hodge 1823: Giles County, Moses Hodge 1824: Giles County, Moses Hodge 1825: Giles County, Moses Hodge [enumerated in March.] 1825: Grayson County, Mofes Hodge [enumerated February 14.] 1826: Giles County: Moses Hodge 1827: (not recorded in Giles or Grayson): Giles County: Henry Hodgefs 1828: (not recorded in Grayson; Giles list illegible) 1829: Giles County, Moses Hodges 1830: [not in Giles County] 1831: William Hodges 1832: William Hodges, Andrew Hodges 1833: William Hodges (not tithable), Andrew Hodges 1834: William Hoges (not tithable), Andrew Hoges 1835: William Hoges, Andrew Hoges (both tithable); Henry Hodges 1836: William Hodges [2], Andrew Hodges [1], Henry Hodge 1837: William Hodges (not tithable), Andrew Hodges 1838: William Hodges (not tithable) 1839: Mary Hodges [1]; Henry Hodge 1840: Henry Hodges, Elijah Hodges, Mary Hodges [0] 1841: Gabriel Hodges, Wilson Hodges, Mary Hodges 1842: Gabriel Hodges I draw three things from this. First, there is a likelihood that the Moses in the Grayson census of 1820 is the same man as the Moses in the Giles census of 1810. The only time the two appear in the to different tax lists for the same year is 1825. Second, it appears that, starting in about 1830, there is another Hodge/Hodges family, William Hodges. Third, I know who Henry Hodges is. He is the son of Robert Hodges and Susannah Hall of Franklin Co., Va. (thus Moses is his uncle). He will remain in the New River Valley until after the War Between the States, when he will move up along the Kanawha Trace to join the colony of Franklin Co., Hodges in Putnam Co., W. Va. So Henry is not part of the problem. He may be part of the solution. Although the evidence is not free from ambiguity, I believe his sister Mary married William Link of Giles County in 1825. A family letter in the 1840s refers to a journey to Tennessee and staying on the way at "Henry's or Links".
Phillip Hodges was born in 1797 in North Carolina and married Mary Goss in 1819 in Indiana. They resided in Morgan Co., IN and they were the parents of ten children......one of whom was John Hodges who was born in 1823. Can anyone tell me anything about this John Hodges? Did he marry, and if so, who? When and where did he die? ANY help you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thank you, "PJ" at bigwayne@preferred.com

Elijah, Thank you for your response. However, I feel that there should be some evidence that I am missing that would support your comments. Do you have a deed or other record for the property in Putnam County? Gabriel had another brother that moved to Clark County so I would assumed that they moved basically together there. Hi Cousin Harvey! I have the answer to your question it is easy for me. Gabriel bought the farm in Schuyler County to run an underground railroad. It was used as a farm by the family, but they lived, and had those last children in Martinstown. He moved to Putman County, in Martinstown in 1842 or so. Then several years later he borrowed money for a second farm from family in Eastern Missouri. I wasn't aware of the Clark County property, but would bet my bottom dollar that he was running an underground railroad there too. He'd left Indiana because the slave catchers were getting to close sometime between 1842 and 1852. My ancestor Robert Walker Hodges told my grandfather Elias that his dad had moved to Missouri to get away from the slave catchers and that he had run an underground railroad in Missouri until the end of the Civil War. The home was always Martinstown, Putnam County, MO. Elijah ----- Original Message ----- From: "Harvey L. I have a question of those who are descendants of Gabriel, son of William and Deborah L. Creath Hodges. According to the information that several of you have posted showed that several of his children from 1853-1868 were all born in Martinstown, Putnam County, Missouri. However, Gabriel purchased land in Clark County in 1852 and it wasn't until 1857 that he purchased land in Schuyler County. This would indicate to me that the children born between these dates were most likely born in Clark County. Gabriel is on the census in 1860 in Schuyler County. I would think that the two children born between these dates would have been born in Schuyler County. At some time between 1860 and the 1870 census, the family did finally move to Putnam County. Does anyone have any idea when he moved to Putnam County?
