    1. Re: [HODGES-L] Fw: Re: Hodges of Pittsylvania - Franklin Counties, VA
    2. Thanks Gerry. I meant to put a litle intro to see if anyone could help Dennis on his Anna Hodges question. Luther H. Hodges was my great-uncle. Most of what you posted is accurate but my great-aunt Beulah used to get furious whenever that line about Luther being the only one to go to college was repeated because she did, too. He ws raised in Leaksville, in Rockingham County, NC, but he was born in Pittsylvania County, Va. near the town of Cascade. My dad was named after him. I will post the information on his brothers and sisters. Meanwhile, if anyone can shed any light on Dennis' Anna Hodges question, I will pass the information on. Scroggs came here about a year ago and he is making himself a great nuisance. He proposes to be a great temperance man and officiously seeks to enlighten the Barbarians out here as he calls them. I am told you can give some light on his true character. We wish to know whether Scroggs ever carried on a Drug Store in your place or rather a dram shop. Did he sell whiskey to back door customers? Did he keep a station on the underground R.R.? Was your neighborhood glad when he left? Was he a man of integrity, of good moral character, was he a notorious s—t-as or a gentleman? 3. Bob & Dennis, etc. I am writing to remind you & others who may be researching the Luther Hartwell Hodges lines, that I sent some info on Luther H. Hodges 9/28/1999 regarding the honors he received from the Rotarians and other citizens of North Carolina. Luther had requested that no buildings, highways, or other structures be named in his memory. But the Rotarians wanted to place a portrait of him in the Raleigh Durham Airport and his family gave permission. The Rotary bulletin had a picture of one of his daughters. This was from the Oct. 1998 Rotarian magazine. His daughter is Betsy Bernard. Luther wrote his biography "Businessman in the State House." Luther was raised in poverty near Larksville, NC, one of his parents' nine children to attend college. He graduated from the U. of NC in 1919, and was President of the Student Council and senior class. He immediately joined Marshall Field & Co. as an office boy eventually rising to become VP of worldwide manufacturing by his reitrement in 1950. A WW II veteran, he served as administrator of the Marshall Plan, working in several German cities, and chief of industry, US Div. of Economic Cooperation, upon retiring. In 1952, Luther ran as a political outsider and was elected Lt. Governor of NC, becoming governor when William B. Umstead died in office in 1954. As US Secretary of Commerce, he established the Business Ethics Advisory Council.l Continuing this theme, he wrote "The Business Conscience" in 1963 and expounded on ethical behavior in his autobiography, "Businessman in the State House." The Luther H. Hodges Distinguished Professorship of Business Ethics, funded by his friends, was the first such chair at the University of North Carolina School of Business. Luther Hodges died at his home in Chapel Hill on 6 Oct 1974, at the age of 76. Does anyone have his autobiography? Do you know who his eight brothers and sisters were?????? My Great Grandfather, Isaac Allen Hodges, first child was named Luther but he died at the age of six (6) in Johnson Co., TX. I would like to know more about this great individual. 2. Thank you for your prayers and concern. My parents work at the front desk of the library, lucklily they were late today due to a dentist appointment. They were walking up the sidewalk as people were running out the door yelling about a gunman inside. They were sent home to watch about their friends on TV. They are so thankful for that loose crown.

    3. I am very emotional as I write this. A shooting has just occurred at the LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake City. As I write, the shooter(s) is apparently still at loose. Some reports say that a number of people have been injured and one person is dead. Please join with me in prayers for the families of those who have been injured or (hopefully not) killed by this mindless act of terrorism.
