By his first marriage a son, Steven, was born to him, who died in infancy. He later married VILATE WALKER (#979) in the Logan Temple 27 Sept. 1905. She was born 17 Feb. 1888 in Preston, Ida., a daughter of Joseph Harrison and Drusilla Dorris (VanNoy) Walker. This couple went to work on the railroad, helping build the first narrow gauge track from Ogden to Butte, Mont. An interesting incident happened; while breaking camp because of a flood, he had to cross the Missoula River. They just got on the bridge when the water rose so high the team had to swim. His wife held the baby above her head to keep her from getting wet. They could just see the horses heads once in a while. When they left the railroad they settled in Oxford. They left the homestead in the fall of 1913 and moved to Preston where they lived until 1920. While in Preston he owned and operated the Isis Theater, also a candy kitchen and ice plant. He moved to Swan Lake on the farm for a brief time, then back to Preston. In 1940 they moved to Ogden and he worked at the Naval Supply Depot as a guard during the second World War. She worked at the same place as a supervisor in the packing department. She passed away 16 May 1949 in Ogden, Ut. He spent his remaining years at Ogden where he passed away 3 Mar. 1958. 2. Gerry Hackley
    3. Kevin - When I first started in genealogy, I wrote the main or Grand Lodge of Masons in Waco for information about my GG Grandfather, Dennis Newton Hodges, and they wrote back and said they did not have anything. Some months later, a cousin sent me a copy of one of his enrollment cards showing the date he got out of the Masons which was about the time he died. Last year, a man from the Masonic Lodge in Johnson County (S. of Fort Worth) was in town because his wife was having a kind of cancer treatment and he contacted me because he had gotten my name from the officers of the Johnson Co. Historical & Genealogical Society. He knew that Dennis Newton Hodges was a former Grand Master (position like President or Leader) of the Masonic chapter in Johnson County. He wanted his picture as they were trying to ob- tain the pictures of all past Grand Masters for their Lodge Hall. I made him a copy and he paid me for it. He was excited and so am I. The Clayton Library here in Houston has books about Masonic membership for some states. Maybe your library does also? About the end of 1993, I wrote the Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Assn., 1301 W. 7th Street, Fort Worth 76102 about Charles Hodges. They hired C.E. Hodges in 1944 and he retired in 1978. His birth date was given as 1913 and ss# 455-05-6698. He worked as a market inspector, a brand inspector and became Asst. Secretary of the Association in 1953. He died in 1987. Also employed there was Hattie Lucille Hodges. She was hired 1947, retired 1967 and date of birth was 1917, ss# 457-24-6162. The last address in their files is 1201 Harris Avenue, Hurst, TX 76053. They make no mention of whether they were related. I wonder if this Charlie is related to your Charles? From another article they sent me (the obit.) Hattie was his wife. The obit. further states he was born and raised on the Johnny White Ranch in Menard County, Texas. After finishing high school, he worked as a bookkeeper at Union Stockyards in San Antonio. After WWII, he returned to San Antonio to become a brand inspector. In 1946, he was transferred to the Fort Worth headquarters, where he was in charge of market inspection and field work. Later Hodges was assigned to the field inspector force primarily working the Fort worth district. He served under four secretaries and one acting secretary during his TSCRA tenure. Survivors include his wife, Hattie Hodges (a 20-year TSCRA employee); three grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and a niece, Betty Ramsey of Midland. So, you can obtain information about your ancestors from lots of sources besides census and cemetaries. Good hunting!
