    1. [HODGES-L] HODGES GRAHAM TUTTLE Effingham and Screven Cos GA
    2. Peavy, John R SAS
    3. Dear Barabara ZEAGLER, I must make this uncharacteristically brief for now. I have been trying to restore a draft TUTTLE message that I lost with some computer problems, and I'll be out of town next week -- I'll make a more complete response later. You will find Caroline [Amanda GRAHAM/TUTLE] HODGES b c 1833 listed with the family of Samuel HODGES d 1861? and Margaret Ann GRAHAM [HODGES buried at Little Ogeechee Baptist Church] in the Effingham Co GA Censuses of 1850 and 1860. I believe that her father is your James TUTTLE. James TUTLE had his daughter's name changed from Caroline Amanda GRAHAM to Caroline Amanda TUTLE in late 1835 by act of the GA Legislature, and then aplied for her guardianship in Effingham Co GA in 1836 (abstracted as TUTTE). Her mother objected to the guardianship shortly after. Her mother married the divorced Samuel HODGES in 1840 in Effingham Co GA (I haven't looked at the 1840 census as to the makeup of the household of the newly-married couple -- his first family was still in Screven Co GA, including his first wife, Ja(y)ne BLACK HODGES -- my wife's ancestors). Caroline Amanda was enumerated as a HODGES in 1850 and 1860. I do not know what became of her after that. I believe that these matters are the first that I found recorded for your TUTTLEs in the two counties, so they must have arrived by the early 1830s (from NC?). By the late 1830s, James TUTTLE had positions of responsibility in Screven Co GA. I had not previously heard of his guardianship of John P. J. TUTLE (please share with me any details that you may have for the guardianships in 1843 and for James TUTTLE's estate in 1848 - which county?); this latter fellow was a Confederate soldier. I've not yet collected much about the MORTONs. Later I can also give you some of the background of Sophia BOYKIN (twin of Henrietta); administration of Rachel NEWTON TUTTLE's estate in 1863 was by Sophia's father, Flerl M. BOYKIN b c 1797 (brother of my ancestor Tobias BOYKIN b 1802). FLERL was a Salzburger surname in St. Matthews Parish/Effingham Co GA. May God Bless You and Your Family, Bob (John Robert) PEAVY Post Office Box 1519 Rincon GA 31326-1519 Note: My Aunt Evelyn Perlie BOYKIN FLOYD's first grade teacher (c 1918) in Screven Co GA was Ada SHARPE d 1989, later the wife of Henry TUTTLE; I don't believe that this couple had any children; they are buried at Mizpah Methodist Church in Effingham Co GA -- I'll find the dates that I jotted down while there. Note: My own HODGES ancestry (primarily Methodist) is from Francis HODGES of NC/Joshua HODGES Sr RS of Bulloch Co GA/Nathaniel HODGES of Bulloch Co GA/Asenith HODGES b 1814 d 1863, wife of Tobias BOYKIN of Screven Co GA. Joshua HODGES Sr RS had several sons including Joseph HODGES Sr RS of Bulloch Co GA. I have found no connection between the two HODGES families (so far). The Effingham Co GA/Screven Co GA HODGES family (I believe they were primarily Baptists) may also have originally been from NC, but had Tory leanings and some of them were in East FL during the Revolution (where Samuel HODGES of Screven and Effingham Cos GA was b c 1782, evidently to William HODGES Sr d by 1802 Effingham Co GA, the earliest "proved" ancestor of the Effingham and Screven Cos GA HODGES family -- I hope that we'll one day find some help on extending this line back). Although they had cousins that were RS, the Screven Co GA BOYKINs were also Tory (perhaps more than "nominal" Tories like the area MIZELLs -- the BOYKINs had land confiscated, then restored in 1805 -- the MIZELLs are my father's ancestors). ________________________________ From: jczeagler@webtv.net 06/03/99 Subject: Hodges/Graham/Tuttle Hi: In your information on HODGES you stated that Samuel HODGES B 1783 married Margaret GRAHAM(sister of Flora GRAHAM) b 1811 d 1897. You said Margaret GRAHAM already had a child born 1833. by James TUTTLE. I have a James TUTTLE who was in Sc.Co.,Ga in 1840. This James TUTTLE was married to Rachael Newton B 1801. Is he the same TUTTLE? He died in 1848 in Screven Co.,Ga. He became guardian of Mary Caroline TUTTLE and John PJ TUTTLE in 1843. He had a son named James L.S. TUTTLE and Martha L. TUTTLE. James L.S. married Sophie BOYKIN. Martha married Ezra David MORTON. James L.S. was 24 and Martha 17 on 1860 census. If my James TUTTLE and yours are the same, do you know the childs name the Margaret Graham had.? Thank you very much. 2. Please post a correction to any error. As these were for personal notes I do not have attributes given to the sources, my apology. Jim Sims Part II Virginia: References to Hodges in Va. and particularly along Licking Hole Creek are given because of the tie of William Hodges to Francis Kearby by the marriage of Wm. Hodge to Elizabeth Kearby, dau. of Francis Kearby. 1727- It is probable that the William Hodges, who died prior to 1732, was the same William Hodges who had lived earlier in Chesterfield County, and then on the north side of the James River near Elk Island, and that he was the father or brother of Robert Hodges who lived on Jenitow Creek. No evidence has been found that Robert Hodges or Hoges of Jenitoe Creek ever lived on LickingHole Creek himself, even though he acquired a tract of 400 acres there and deeded part of it to John Hodges and part of it to William Hodges, giving rise to the conjecture that they were his sons. Although we find Edmund Hodges on Licking Hole Creek six years after William and John, they were likely of the same generation (Hodges Msg Board file 214) 1727- A patent is issued to William Hodges for 380 acres on 16 June 1727 and recorded in the patents book 13, page 89 (Archives of Virginia State Library in Richmond.) 1728- Goochland Co. created from Henrico Co. 1728- Two Goochland Co. deeds, both date 1 July 1728 and recorded 16 July 1728 indicated that Robert Hoges/Hodges and William Worters exchanged respective 200 acre tracts of land on the north side of the James River in St. James Parish, and by description lying on Deep Creek of Licking Hole Creek. Both deeds were witnessed by John Hoges, Thomas Carter and Austin Moore. The language of the two deeds is almost identical. 1732- A patent to William Swift mentioned a tract of land adjacent to the land of William Hodges, deceased. 1733- Estimated date of birth of William Hodges who was father of William Hodges 1754. 1733- Francis Kearby on March 12, 1733 purchased from William Mills and Mary, his wife, 100 acres on Licking Hole Creek the deed being witnessed by Richard Kearby, Edmond Hogges, and William Grimes. 1740- will of David Walker, presumed from wills as father of Sarah Davis, mother of Elizabeth Davis Kerby, Goochland Deeds 434. 1742- Cumberland Co. created from Goochland Co. 1745- On 6 August 1745 William Owen (Father-in-Law of John Kearby) sold this (?) land to Michael Holland Sr. for 25 pds. current money. Added to the above description was Licking Hole Creek and Thomas Machem as a bounding owner. Witnesses were Henry Martin, James Graves, and William Attkins and the deed was recorded 17 Sept. 1745. His mark was a right side up “W”. His wife Lydia released her dower right. Of significance is the name Attkins, since William’s daughter Lydia married an Atkins. 1749- a Thomas Hodges dies in Cumberland Co., Va. 1749- Goochland and Henrico Co. were divided to form two new counties. All of Goochland County and the part of Henrico County that lay on the north side of the James River would remain (even until today) Goochland County and Henrico County. The parts of Goochland Co. and Henrico Co. that lay south of the James River would become Cumberland County (from Goochland) and Chesterfield Co. (from Henrico).

    2. Part I Introduction (first of 8 parts) Some notes on the mIgration of the family of William Hodges, b. ca 1754 possibly Halifax Co., Va.-d. 4/4/1843 Lawrence Co., Al. Note is also given to the familes of Kearby and Davis who were the family of his wife, Elizabeth Kearby of Henry Co., Va. Elizabeth’s parents were Francis and Elizabeth Davis Kearby. Francis was the son of John and Joanna Owens Kirby; Elizabeth Davis parents were Samuel and Sarah (?) Davis of Pittsylvania Co., Va. Family lore from relative in north Alabama says that most likely Elizabeth Kearby Hodges is buried at Lacy’s Spring in near the Tenn River in Morgan Co., Alabama. An elderly descendent of Wm. Hodges says that as a boy in the early 1930’s he and his father visited with Davis and Kearby relatives in northern Alabama. A second line cited is the Sims line of Culpeper Co., Va. into Laurens Co., SC, Lincoln Co.,Tenn. and then into Morgan Co., Alabama. William Hodges in 1830 married the widow of Joel Sims who had died in 1827. At an elderly age Wm Hodges became the step-father of six sons and two daughters. These Sims step children became active in the blacksmith shop of Hodgesand latter as adults participated with Hodges step children in farming and trade in Alabama and Mississippi. Three Sims children married sons or daughters of Jane Hodges Fuller and their descendents are therefore also of the Hodges line. My line derives from a marriage of David Sims (step-son of Wm. Hodges) and Nancy Fuller (grandaughter of Wm. Hodges). Some posted data on the second marriage of Wm. Hodges 1754 in error lists the second marriage of his son William. (Many of the sources cited are from the Hodges Msg. Board file in Roots-L. I hope that this adds to the note of Bob Hodges re Hodges Digest #318 on the migration of families and I would like to thank Bob Hodges as his work is most often cited. Any error is mine, Jim Sims simsacoma@aol.com) Speculative lineage for research is, going backwards William Hodges 1754-1843 William M.(?) 1. [HODGES-L] HODGES Effingham and Screven Cos GA
    2. Peavy, John R SAS
    3. To: ddavis@logicsouth.com Dear Diana DAVIS, Below is a slightly revised message which lists eleven children b 1791-1820 for John HODGES Sr (name of wife unknown); I don't know who another two might be -- I've not seen more than eleven listed anywhere. A John HODGES divorced a Tabitha _____ in the early 1800s (I don't have the record handy which indicates date and possibly county - it's in The Georgia Black Book Volume II). Although this message by now needs some serious updates, that list of the children is based on the Isaac HODGES-Flora GRAHAM Family Bible Record (two transcriptions). I don't know of primary evidence for a number of the middle names that appear with many of these folks in secondary sources, shown thusly {?} below, including my wife's ancestor Samuel {? ?} HODGES, younger brother of John HODGES Sr, for whom I have never even seen a middle initial in the records. John {?} HODGES Sr appears to be the son of William {?} HODGES Sr d by 1802 (based on deed records). Most importantly, I know of no primary evidence to link this family to other, earlier HODGES. The secondary sources listing William HODGES Sr's wife as Mary _____ may also be based on the HODGES-DAMPIER deed record from 1802, where Mary HODGES is listed with the children (John HODGES [Sr], William HODGES [Jr], Samuel HODGES, Nathan HODGES, Mary HODGES & John DAMPEER who m Esenure HODGES) and thus could be a daughter or the widow (that deed is posted at the Screven Co GA genweb site). The Tory leanings and East Fl connections for this family may provide us some answers as to earlier HODGES connections. May God Bless You and Your Family, Bob (John Robert) PEAVY Post Office Box 1519 Rincon GA 31326-1519 Carol: The Nathaniel HODGES data is on my list for getting together soon (we'll be out of town next week, but I hope to finish soon since I won't be able to get to the Statesboro Court House to see his will and transcribe it -- I'll have only an abstract for now). I also track down that JACKSON blacksmith data. ________________________________ 06/02/99 Subject: Re: [GASCREVE-L] Re: JOHN AND TABITHA HODGES Do you have John and Tabitha's 13 children? I only have 9--Elizabeth,1791; Lucretia, 1793; James, 1796; William, 1798; Patience, 1801; John, 1804; Hardy, 1806; Elihu, 1809; and Isaac, 1813. Diana ddavis@logicsouth.com Updated 4/27: Gen. Site: http://www.my-ged.com/davis/ ---------------------- Forwarded and somewhat revised --------------------------- From: John R Peavy 12/12/98 Subject: [GASCREVE-L] HODGES Effingham and Screven Cos GA Dear GA HODGES researchers, I will not have the opportunity to greatly revise this 3 Jun 1998 message to Cousin Joyce right now (we're moving next week), but I hope that it will be somewhat helpful until I can. Consider this message as notes on a work in progress. My wife is descended from this HODGES family which is predominantly in Effingham and Screven Cos GA (and Cousin Joyce's bunch to Lowndes Co GA). At about the same time as this family appeared in early Effingham Co GA (founded 1777), another HODGES family appeared in another part of early Effingham Co GA in what was to become Screven Co GA (formed 1793) and then Bulloch Co GA (formed 1796)(my ancestors, whom I outlined in a post to HODGES-L on 23 Nov 1998, Subject: HODGES Bulloch Co GA & BOYKIN Screven Co GA). Similar names in the same general area sometimes make difficult the division of records between them. My wife's Samuel HODGES m2, and I will be on the lookout for more information concerning him and his two wives and their children. Yet another complication (a third bunch or a variation on the first?): There is another Samuel HODGES b 1815, the son of William {Henry?} HODGES (b 1770 NC d 1849 m1 c 1805 m1 Ann BLITCH b c 1775 d 1815 Tattnall Co GA m2 11 Mar 1827 Tattnall Co GA) & Hannah COLSON (b 1787). Samuel HODGES b 1815 d c 1848 m Elizabeth DANIEL. This data is generally taken from Hodges Family History - Allied Family: Little - 1675-1849, compiled by Robert Ellis COLSON of Huntsville AL (5 pp, published 1992?) which begins with Robert HODGES in MD/VA in the 1730's and continues through his grandson John Robert HODGES b c 1735 d c 1810 who was a property owner in Effingham Co GA by 1790 who m c 1756 Tabitha {LITTLE?}, parents of William {Henry?} HODGES who moved to Tattnall Co GA in 1806. At this point, lacking the data on which the analysis in this paragraph and that of The History of Screven County, Georgia Family History Article F173 are based, I can't tell if the families are all one or if data from the one has been confused with the other (recurrence of John m Tabitha). Although the effect of this message will perhaps be confusion, the intent is to point out that the similar names among these two or three (or more) HODGES families in South GA makes caution a high priority when plodding through the data. ... ------- To: jfeazell@datasys.net Subject: HODGES Effingham, Screven and Bulloch Cos GA Part II Dear Cousin Joyce, I've added the information that you shared and a couple of other tidbits concerning your (and my wife's) HODGES line, the children of William HODGES d by 1802: John HODGES [Sr] m by 1790 Effingham Co GA m {Tabitha?} _____, parents of Elizabeth HODGES b 12 Mar 1791 m 18 Feb 1819 Bulloch Co GA d < 1850 m Henry FERN ?b 1794 England d > 1850 Lucretia HODGES b 19 Mar 1793 James HODGES b 6 Feb 1796 William {James?} HODGES b 8 Nov 1798 GA m 4 Apr 1833 Effingham Co GA d > 1860 m Martha {Margaret?} [W.] COLSON b c 1812 GA d > 1860 (granddaughter of Mouring WILLIAM SHEPPARD who at age 95 is with them in 1850) Andrew E. Hodges and Mary Ann Dampier were in Lowndes County, Ga in the 1850, 1860, 1870 Census. I don't have a marriage license for them but feel sure they were married in Lowndes County since he was born and raised in Lowndes. His father Nathan came to Lowndes in 1828 settled on Land Lot 85 and stayed until his death. Daniel G. stayed with him and ended up buying Land Lot 86 and kept it until his death and it was divided among his 6 children. William Calhoun Hodges the second child of Daniel G. Hodges bought the other 5 childrens part of the land lot and it was again divided among his children. A large portion of the land is still with decendants of his, which included my father, Perry. When dad died his land was divided among five of us, and we all still have that portion of Land Lot 86. The question of John Hodges b. 22 Nov 1807, he married Julia Ann Boyd and he was the son of Nathan Hodges and Mary Graham. I have Samuel Hodges married to Jane Black as first wife and Margaret Graham as second wife. Samuel and Jane had a son named Ambrose. I have other information on both these families if you would like to have it. The other names you mentioned in Bullock County, Ga, I think, are from another line of Hodges. 2. John. The information on page 3 concerns me. Listed at the bottom are a Nathan and Nathaniel Hodges. My research includes a Nathaniel and Nathan Hodge with their background in Maryland, at least Nathan is. there. His father is suppose to be Nathan or Nathaniel. I know Hodge and Hodges are the same family in this country, We are in the same time frame. do you think this line could connect. ?m / I am not sure there was another line in the Hodge family book with Nathan and Nathaniel. The people I have talked to seem to think this is one group. IWe shared information several months ago, I am researching George Baird Hodge from Kentucky. WJPteach@AOL.com,

    1. [HODGES-L] Early Settlement Along Pigg River (part 1)
    2. This will be the first in a series of posts dealing with the early settlement along the Pigg River in eastern Franklin County and western Pittsylvania County in Virginia, beginning about 1747, by a group of families from he Lickinghole Creek area of Goochland County,Virginia. I am posting this to the Hodges list, because my primary interest is in the Hodges family, and to the Melungeon list, because the information also involves the Mullins, Halls, Belchers and Adkins. I am also sending this to a few individuals that may not be on either list, but have an interest in one of these families. As a result, the posts may tend to wander a little far afield but I think that this is necessary to present the evidence. Part of my thesis is that the frontier was settled not by rugged individuals but by family groups. I also offer this research in partial response of John K. Gott's admonition that he wishes that genealogists would concentrate intensively on a particular area and not focus exclusiely on a single family, because we will all learn more that way. I also hope that this will be a conversation, so I encourage everyone to offer comments, criticism (I am not thin-skinned: I am a lawyer) questions and answers. The earliest definite record of my Hodges ancestors are land entries dated March 20, 1746 (1747 as we reckon it) on page 54 of the Land Entry Book for what was then the Western District of Lunenburg County (later old Halifax). My working assumption is that this Robert Hodges is the same as the Robert Hodges who deeded land on Amos's Branch of Lickinghole Creek in Goochland County, Virginia, in 1728. The recurrence of names -- Kerby, Owens, Hall, Walton and Atkinson --in the area where he settled that also occurred in the area where I think that he came from, convinces me that this is the same man. The evidence provided by these names also documents the movement of a group of families to what was then the frontier. To be continued. Bob Hodges
