    3. Thanks , Ken, You are wonderful! I do appreciate any help I can get. I'm one of those generally silent list members , who reads it all , but doesn't usually speak up . However, I am always appreciative of what you and many other "regulars" contribute. You are an amazing bunch of researchers. Thanks again. 2. Don Williams
    3. Hi list - I have a couple of different HODGES in my tree. I have been looking for the parents of J. B. Hodges, born Dec 1831 in SC. I have seen his name as John Bedford Hodges, as well as Bradford Hodges. He moved from SC and ended up in Jefferson county, Alabama, where he died in 1903. The other Hodges, John, was born around 1765 in Essex, VA. He married Frances Anderson, born 1764 in Albermerle county, VA. Any information, especially on John B., would be welcome. Don

I found that the source may not have been the original Bible, but rather a transcription by Mrs. J. B. 3. Hi Jim, Don't know a lot about this Benjamin. I do have some on a Benjamin from SC and I'll check further on him. The one in Elizabethton, Carter Co., Tn., which incidently is my hometown, was believed by some to be the brother of my ancestor, Ambrose Hodge. I have found no evidence to support this and in fact what I have disputes it. This Benjamin was from the Clinch River area near Claiborne Co. and was the father of Samuel, Thomas and Evaline Hodge. Evaline married Levi Estep on 8/14/1823 in Carter Co.. What do you have that connects him to SC? Ken in Orlando At 09:53 PM 08/01/1999 EDT, you wrote: >Ken: Jim Hodge here. 3. I recently saw the posting at the bottom of this letter on this Hodges list. I am hopeful someone can help me clarify things. First , I am a descendant of JOHN F.HODGES , SR,and his wife ANN STANDARD , from Darlington District , SC. Far better researchers than myself have evidently tried for years and been unable to come up with who this JOHN's parents were; thus , I was quite surprised and excited when I came upon an entry by chance in a book " The Arbuthnots in North America" , by Margaret Arbuthnot Ridall and Elizabeth Ridall Henry. The entry was regarding John Wesley Arbuthnot and wife Mary Elizabeth Waddell. Acording to this book , Mary Elizabeth (Lizzie)Waddell was born in Baton Rouge 26 July 1850 and died in Albuquerque NM 6 April 1913. It said she was a daughter of Hugh T. Waddell and Mary Frances nee Yersin. It further stated : "Lizzie's brothers were Robert D. and Charles Waddell. Her grandparents were Abel Waddell , migrated from Darlington , SC and died in MS, and Loretta nee_______. Abel Waddell's parents were NOEL WADDELL and MARY ANN nee HODGES , daughter of JOHN F. HODGES , SR.and ANN STANDARD . NOEL WADDELL and MARY ANN HODGES were first cousins. MARY ANN HODGES WADDELL was a sister of JOHN F. HODGES , JR. , father of MARY ANN HODGES who married the Rev. John Sawyer Arbuthnot.Noel Waddell's parents were ABEL WADDELL and RACHEL nee STANDARD. RACHEL'S sister ANN married JOHN F. HODGES , SR........" Now , here comes the part which was a HUGE surprise for me........ " JOHN SR.'S parents were FRANCIS HODGES , born in Belfast , Northern Ireland , and ELIZABETH. They came from Belfast 21 July 1761 , to the United States on the Brigantine Chichester , with ROBERT , age 8 ; ALEXANDER , age 6 ; and JOHN , age 4 . JOHN F. HODGES , SR. and ANN STANDARD had : MARY ANN , born 18 Nov. 1780 , married NOEL WADDELL 21 Dec. 1797; JOHN F. , JR. , born 24 Jan. 1783, married THEREBY HARRELL ; SARAH ; WILLIAM ; ANN ; REBECCA ; NANCY ; DORTHY ; WILLIAM HENRY ; ROBERT ; ELIZABETH ; GEORGE ; and RICHARD ." As you can see , this is the same information regarding FRANCIS HODGES which was posted to this list , and which is at the bottom of this page.I contacted the author/compiler of the Arbuthnot book , and she put me in touch with the lady who said she was the person who had researched this and who had come to the conclusion that JOHN F. HODFES , SR. was the son of the above FRANCIS HODGES and his wife ELIZABETH. She said that she had "found that information years ago digging around in a library somewhere in South Carolina. I even went to Doveville ? (I think that is the name of the town) where the Waddells and the Hodges are located. The church foundation is still there but nothing is let now but an overgrown cemetery with water mocasins. I was tooafraid of the snakes to venture into the cemetery. Anyway there was a book that I found which gave this information about the Hodges....." She then went on to say that she is extremely busy , but would try to dig up the information when she could. I don't want to continue to hassle her regarding how she came to these conclusions , what she found in the cemetery , and what book she meant, and would have just waited patiently til she hopefully had the time to fill me in-- but then , the posting came across the Hodges list which referred to the very same FRANCIS HODGES who this lady feels is the father of JOHN F. HODGES , SR. I then saw a posting to the list from Kenneth Hodge , who stated that he thought this FRANCIS was probably the father of a GEORGE HODGE from Burke Co. , NC. I know Kenneth is a meticulous researcher , so was hopeful that maybe he , or someone else on the list , could help me either prove or disprove the father/son kinship of FRANCIS HODGE and JOHN F. HODGES , SR. My research time is rather limited at certain times also , and it just happens that I have a little freed up time now and in the next week or so.After that , my time will be at more of a premium , unfortunately. That's another reason why I'm attempting to enlist help from list members now, rather than waiting for the lady I contacted to eventually get back to me. Thanks for any help that any of you can give me. 2. Kenneth Hodge
    3. Finally located something on James Valpeau that was posted on the list a while back. I believe by Brenda Hester. James b. ca 1841 and md. Terrie Edith Gowan, had 14 siblings, 4 in the Civil War. His father was Dr. Joseph Alexander Hodges who was born in SC in 1809. Joseph married Harriet Caroline Watts in Clark Co., Ms. in 1834. Harriet was b. in Ga. in 1815 and was probably the d/o James and Nancy Watts of Wayne and Clark Co.'s. Joseph's father was Thomas, b. ca 1773 in SC and his mother was unknown. Thomas moved to Wayne Co. before 1820 and was listed in the 1820 and 1830 census for Wayne. It appears that Thomas only had one child and that his wife was somewhat older than him. It is possible that they had other children but Joseph was the only one living at home in 1820. I'll work on the siblings and see if I can connect them. Ken in Orlando

    1. [HODGES-L] Moonshinin' Hodges....
    2. Aha....perhaps my William W. Hodges went to Kentucky for the water instead of the land? All I know for sure is that all secondary sources say he died in Harrodsburg in 1813 and that he was a Revolutionary War veteran, and that he had 7 sons: Benjamin=Jane/Jenny McCombs, Samuel Harvey = Martha Yates (Patsy) Shirley, Jesse, Thomas=Matilda Brown Lewis, John Pleasant, William, and David=Nancy Ann James. Were there moonshiners in Goochland? One of my favorite memories of coming to Virginia from California was my introduction to white lightning....whooeee. connie

    1. [HODGES-L] Liquor Conspiracy Case
    2. Bob Hodges
    3. I am resposting an e-mail I sent to someone inquiring about this same topic: Wingfield's Franklin County history book says that J.P. Hodges was sheriff from 1912 to 1926. Then his son D. Wilson Hodges served out his unexpired term. The Salmon history recounts that Deputy Sheriff J. P. Hodges took part in the capture of bootlegger Cephas Poindexter in 1905, after Poindexter killed U.S. Deputy Marshal Zackfield B. Wade. D. Wilson Hodges ws indicted by a federal grand jury in Harrisonburg in 1935 for conspiracy to defraud the government of whiskey excise taxes. The Salmons have an extensive discussion about how Sheriff Peter Hodges organized protection for bootlegging in Franklin County after his election in 1928. The account mentions the brothers D. Wilson Hodges and Joseph P. Hodges, Jr. and their mother Betty as testifying in the case. D. Wilson Hodges left office Jan. 1, 1932 after he was defeated for reelection. You should look at the Salmon book first. Its source is the Roanoke Times (newspaper) for dates around April, 1935. The Salmons note that a fictionalized account of the conspiracy can be found in Jess Carr, The Moonshiners. Other Hodges mentioned are Kent Hodges, George S. Hodges, Alphonso Hodges, and Willard R. Hodges. Now you know why no one wants to talk about it a whole lot. As far as Si Hodges, my guess is that he is a Josiah. A Josiah Hodges in the War Between the States from Franklin County was in the 57th Va. Infantry. My best guess would be that the one you are looking for is the son of William and Lavinia Hodges, married 1825, and born about 1840. His brothers and sisters were Mitchell, Caleb, Peter (d. 1865), Nancy, Ferdinand, and Fanny (and possibly others). But you should be able to look in the 1870 or 1880 Census and spot Joseph Peter, Sr's family right away.
