Here is a post from the Hodges GenForum site. It fills in a line that Juanita Patton did not in her book. Daniel Goolsberry Hodges was the son of Samuel Woodrid Hodges (1814-1891, son of Isham Hodges and Sally Cockran) and Miriam Hodges (1818-1888, daughter of Aaron and Elizabeth Markham Hodges). Here is the post: Daniel aka "Goof" b. 04/19/1849, m. 1867 Penina Catherine "Kate" Eckels/Echols (05/18/1850-11/18/1898). Daniel's parents were "Big Sam" Hodges & Miram ? Big Sam was a slave owner according to family legend & lived Bethpage, TN. Daniel & Kate had 11 children: Cora Cornelia* (1868-1941)m. Sanford Paris Perdue 1884, Mary Anvalline "Lena" (1870-?),Eugene, Andrew, Joseph D. (1874-1963?)m. Winnie Isabell Amalia/Omaha, Elisha E. (1877-?)m. Dolly Ward, Maude Spain (1878-?)m. George J. Martin, Brodie Wilson (1881-?)m. Elva?, Sophie Ann Elizabeth (1884-?)m. Bob Lowrance, Francis Goolsbury (1886-?), & Chester Abraham (1888-?). The information I have was written by my greatgrandmother at age 84 in 1970. The dates may not be exact. My Granny's (Myrtle Davis Perdue)parents were Cora Cornelia Hodges & Sanford Paris Perdue. Cora died 1941 & is buried in Paradise, CA at Magalia Cemetery as well as her husband. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I hope to hear from long lost relatives. Hi. I received the following from a nonsubscriber and wondered if any of you have information on this family? The brother of my maternal direct line Benjamin Hodges was Samuel Harvey Hodges who married the sister of my paternal direct line James Albert Shirley. They were all born in Virgina and migrated to Kentucky in the early 1800s....but I haven't researched all of the collateral families so there is always the possibity of another connection. My gg grandfather was Paul Shirley born in Glasgow KY in 1828 and went to California in 1849. connie Falls Church VA. ~~~snip In a message dated 8/2/99 9:37:20 PM Pacific Daylight Time, VOLTAGE888 writes: << I found your site on aol and was interested to see that you had Hodges-Shirley connections in your family. My husband's great-great grandfather was James I Hodges (1830-1897) from Kentucky who married Mary Jane Shirley(1842-1910). They traveled to California and first settled in the Sonora area. In the 1870's they moved to Hollister CA, where the Hodges family still can be found. If any of this information connects to your research, please let me know. >>
Ken: The only Evaline Hodge that I have was a daughter of Simon Hodge and Caroline Church. Birthdate of 1862. I don't have any marriage record for her though. Simon Hodge b 1832 was the brother to Littleton Hodge b1826. Another one of the Hodge people who should be Garland. Evaline's siblings that I have were Murphy Hodge b. abt 1860, Cassandra 'Cassie' Hodge b.abt 1866 and Nancy Hodge b 1866. Nancy musta been named after her grandmother. I don't have it in my Family Tree Maker but, I think there was another Evaline in this general line. I previously mentioned that Nancy Hodge b 1812 married Hardin Hurley and had several more children. One of them was named Evaline Hurley. I'd have to go thru my papers to find out who sent that to me though. Isaac Garland, Nancy's first husband later married Anna Estep, and they had eleven childen that I know of. One of the daughters, Angeline Garland b. 1843 married a Levi Hodge b.1836. Do you have any knowledge of where this Levi Hodge came from? I have six children listed for them. The other child of Nancy Hodge and Isaac Garland was Julie Ann Hodge and she reportedly married John Estep, No children. If I remember correctly, down there in Stoney Creek there was a Hodge Road that connected to Estep Loop and back out Richardson Rd. Maybe some day I will get a chance to go drive those roads. Jim

Hi Jim, Now I remember your line (must have had one of those "senior moments"). The name of Nancy brought it back. At the end of the RW North and South Carolina was giving bounty land in Tennessee for services. There were many that moved from SC to Tn. during this time and I have record of some Hodge/s from SC who received land in eastern Tn.. I sent a letter to the gentleman who was listed in the "Carter County and it's People" book as a source on the info on Evaline Hodge who married Levi Estep. His response added nothing as his source was verbal from local people, nothing documented. Ken in Orlando At 12:21 AM 08/03/1999 EDT, you wrote: >Ken: I don't have any documentation, just hear say. John Hodge(s) was likely the son of John Hodge(s), Sr., who came to and settled in the Cheraw District sometime in the early 1750's. I know our site looks professional that is because my dau Becky is so good at it. we are just like you, not in the business, just looking for our kin. We share all info with anyone. We always list the submitter on the record. This is a draw back sometimes because they contact each other and we don't get the new information. We try to be as accurate as we can, but it is a work in progress and we don't want anyone to take it as the final proof on their line. thanks, josie jbass@digital.net 216 Beach Park Lane Cape Canaveral, FL 32920-5003 Home of The *HARRISON* Repository & *MY FAMILY* http://moon.ouhsc.edu/rbonner/harintro.htm My Family WWW: http://moon.ouhsc.edu/rbonner/index.htm LINDSAY & HARRISON Surnames & CSA-HISTORY Roots Mail List GENCONNECT: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/indx/FamAssoc.html Data Managed by beautiful daughter Becky Bass Bonner and me, Josephine Lindsay Bass

Ken: I don't have any documentation, just hear say. Supposedly Benjamin was the father or grandfather of Nancy Hodge b abt 1812. She had three children out of wedlock with Isaac Garland, later married Isaac Garland and then in 1845 married Hardin Hurley. One descendant of Hardin and Nancy had some information given to her by a family member that was done by a genealogist that stated that Benjamin was the father or grandfather of Nancy Hodge and that he was born in SC. I've seen no documentation. I've requested some documatation but unless you constantly pressure the people it seems that it kinda goes by the side Its always seemed a little strange that a person would move into Tenn. from SC, seems like most of the SC people were on their way further south. Benjamin was in the 1830 census of Carter Co TN, but not in the 1840. I suspect that he was the gentleman of the house that was 70 - 79 yrs of age. In 1840 there was an Elizabeth Hodge in the Carter Co census that had a man age 90-99 and I have often wondered if he could have been Benjamin with a misquoted age. I have no idea who Elizabeth Hodge was either. I've run into one other Hodge family in Carter Co. that had an Emanuel and a Calaway Hodge in it, but these people were reported to have moved back to Lee Co. in Virginia. Down the line from Nancy was Littleton Hodge (should have been Garland) who had a bunch of kids. My direct line is thru James Calloway Hodge the first born of Littleton Hodge. Enough said for now. Thanks and keep me informed if something comes up. Jim Hodge
Wow Marita, I finally have someone researching this Hodges line. Ckeck the web site - http://moon.ouhsc.edu/rbonner/myff/d0078/g0000075.html#100114 That Lanier should be the brother of Seth. Get the book Some Colonial and Revolutionary Families of North Carolina and check page 228. Please let me know what you deciphered from your search. Also, the book, Cotton to Kaolin, a History of Washington County, (in Georgia) has this family on page 431. I need to get Kinfolks by Modena Hodges Peterson which also lists these family members. I am a descendant of Redding Othaniel Augustus Hodges b. 1790 son of (according to family) Henry Hodges, Jr. brother of your William. Please look for my Redding. He hides from 1790 until about 1830. Also, go to http://www.my-ged.com/db/page/davis/9057 That William should be the father of Seth and Lanier. (as in book sources above) Please share further data. Hi all, i am back on the list - I have the McCants Wall Book my cousin Robbie jane wrote in 1982; I have picked up the mantle and enlarged all lines in our family to 25,000 on web site now - have found almost nothing to correct in her original research of our family, just found more. i sent out copies of the McCants Wall book to the NEHS; American Gen in Washington DC and several others abt 2 yrs ago. below is some pertinent info that might help. can anybody add to as all is still hazy. ROYAL or COLONIAL PLATS on LITTLE PEE DEE RIVER Province of South Carolina Contributed by Jo Church Dickerson, 1998. These plats were recorded between 1735 and 1775. Usually, they were surveys for lands subsequently granted to the same individual by the King of England, known now as the Royal or Colonial Plats. Royal Plats Marion County, S.C. _ Victoria Proctor 1998 Marion Co. Phearby HARRELL could this be her family?) plat for 200a in Craven Co; 1772/01/18 0009 003 0015 00307 02 Timeline 1682- Craven county - from the NC line southward to Seewee (Awendaw) Creek - (where is this creek?) 1769 - Judicial Districts Formed: Cheraws - a triangle northwest of Georgetown, bounded by the North Carolina Line, and on the southwest by Lynches River. (details?) 1785 - Cheraws District: Marlborough, Chesterfield, and Darlington. (Long Bluff-Greenville is now Darlington or Bennetsville?) I had not tied Francis Hodges data to our line until the Arbruthnot info came out in Sandy's message - possible if we can find some proof. The old cemetery mentioned in Sandy's post may be the Old STANDARD FIELD. Does anyone have any news of this cemetery and a marker being planned for Capt. William STANDARD? I did not find any further info on Francis in SC, who came from Belfast in 1761. So as not to confuse Francis's I looked up others as well. This one is interesting as it may connect to Roger Hodges of Isle of Wight. Description: The Virginian county of Norfolk was created in 1691 and merged into the city of Chesapeake in 1963. This database is a collection of abstracted wills by county residents between 1710 and 1753. It was originally published in 1922. Containing detailed information regarding the decedent's family, friends and possessions, researchers will find the names of over 7000 persons. Researchers will find valuable information on over 7000 persons either written in the will or included as witnesses. For persons with ancestors from eastern Virginia, this can be a helpful source of information. Extended Description: Dotted lines indicate matter intentionally left out by the Abstractor. Italics indicate uncertainty of spelling. The testator's name in heavy type is taken from the spelling of the name as given in the body of the will and not from the signature. When the will has been torn, decayed or is illegible it is so stated in parenthesis. The List of Wills so far as possible is made up from the spelling of the testator's name in the signature and is not taken from the body of the will. Where the exact mark of the testator or witness cannot be set in type, a plus (+) is used. Bibliography: McIntosh, Charles Fleming. Brief Abstracts of Norfolk County Wills, 1710-1753. Igot carried away here, but hope this will be useful to some one. If anyone recognizes them please post to the list. josie CENSUS This collection contains Federal Census Indexes, State Census Indexes, and indexes to various Federal non-population schedules (Mortality Schedules, Veterans Schedules, Slaves Schedules) for most of the U.S. and parts of Canada. The scope of the collection includes colonial records (pre-1790 tax lists, resident's lists, etc.) and censuses from 1790 to 1870. Some census indexes for later years exist for some states (i.e. Hawaii 1910, Colorado 1880, etc.). It is estimated that the collection contains information on some 35 million people. This collection of marriage records includes the names of over 300,000 men and women married in the state between 1740 and 1850. In addition to providing the names of bride and groom, researchers will find the date of marriage and county in which the ceremony was performed. For those seeking married ancestors from Virginia, this database can be a valuable source of information. Extended Description: Bibliography: Dodd, Jordan R, et. al. Hi Russ, Thanks for responding. I actually was also aware that this information came from that transcription , and , like you , have searched and hoped I'd find the person with the original Bible in their hands!! I hate working off an "official family group sheet" , but , unfortunately , that's all that's available at this point.I keep hoping someone who has it or knows of it's whereabouts , will see one of these posts and will respond. Thanks again.
