This database is a listing of men who served in the colonial militia from those early years as a mere settlement up until the early 1770s. It was compiled in 1913 from sources available to the author in the Virginia State Library. Researchers will find the name of soldier and the reference in the original work where the record was found. Containing the names of over 6000 men, it can be an extremely helpful resource for those seeking colonial Virginia ancestors. Bibliography: Eckenrode, H. J. 2. Gerry: Re: Abel Hodges (1775-1843) married Charlotte Harrell in Jeff Co. Ga in 1811 This Abel Hodges family history says that they came from down from the Carolinas/Virginia area thru South Carolina, so its probable that the Abel Hodges in the 1790 South Carolina Census (Greenville dist) and the 1800 census (Pendleton Dist) is this Abel Hodges, but I have no proof. There is an Abel Hodges listed in the 1820 Census Heads of Families in Baldwin Co. 1830 Census Wash Co. lists Abel Hodges lists 2 adults, 7 children (3 male and 4 female) and 8 slaves. 1840 Census Wash. Co. lists Abel Hodges - 1 male (50-60), 1 female (40-50), 1 male, 2 females (15-20), 1 male (5-10), 1 female (under 5) and 56 slaves in the 98th GMD. The Hodges family lived in that vicinity for many years. He and Charlotte along with other Hodges family are buried in the Hodges Family Cem on old Indian Trail Road. Abel and Charlotte had 8 children that I'm aware of. Abel H. Hodges born 1821 was the third. I have no further info on him. Their oldest son Augustus George Washington Hodges (1813-1879) is my line. He married Ann C. Avant and had 7 children....the fifth was a son named Abel Hodges born in 1857 in Wash. Col GA. I would sure like to connect Abel to his parents.....but so far no luck. Keep in touch Lynda

    3. Lynda - I can't help but be curious if your Abel Hodges who m. Charlotte Harrell could be that same Abel Hodges who is in the 1790 Fed. Census of Abbeville Dist., SC? Do you happen to know. Also, would you happen to know more about his son, Abel H. Hodges???? What does the H. stand for? Do you know approximately when & where he was born? You mention that another son had a son named Abel. Did anyone have a son named Isaac? The will left equal shares of the estate to a son Samuel, a son Shelton, and to six daughters; Elizabeth, who married Andrew Speare/Speer; Anna, who married John Ridings; Agnes, or Agey, who married William Hodges; Judith, who married Amos Hodges; Sarah, who married Elisha Isaacs; and Susannah, who married Joseph Ratcliff. Joseph's son Shelton also received 75 acres of land on which he was living (adjoining Joseph's land). A granddaughter Mary (daughter of William, deceased), was to be given 15 pounds, and Joseph's wife, Agnes was to receive the residue of the estate. Agnes, Samuel, and Shelton were named as executors. When Joseph died in 1813, Samuel had left Surry Co. for Barren Co., KY, and Shelton was left to administer the settlement of his father's estate. In the probate papers filed in the NC State Archives, Samuel's share was signed for by his brother-in-law William Hodges as attorney for Samuel.
