DATABASE OF THE DAY (Free for 10 Days!) <<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>> ======================================================= Kansas Territorial Census, 1855-1856 With the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, Kansas became a territory. However, with the issue of slavery still undecided in the Union, this new territory became "bleeding Kansas," as pro- and anti-slavery factions sought local control. This database is a transcription of the territorial "census" performed the following year. In reality, this "census" was a voter's list, and may not necessarily contain all residents of the territory as some voters boycotted elections. It provides the resident's name along with city, district, and precinct or township where they were registered to vote. Page numbers are included to aid the researcher in finding the original record. Including the names of over 16,000 persons, this collection can be a great aid to those seeking early Kansas ancestors. Bibliography: Graden, Debra, ed. "Kansas Territory Census, 1855-1856." Researchers will find the child's name, race, sex, birth date, and parents' names. Page numbers refer to the original county document from which these records were taken.
