I have a Henry Hodges who married Appolonia Cole (Cherokee Indian and not sure of spelling of first name). I do not have dates or locations yet but they would be ggg grandparents of my husband and family has told us they are buried in Tennessee. I believe they might have some Kentucky connections at some point also. Does anyone recognize the names? Thanks Kathy
Hello all-- I like to post this every so often because we are always getting new subscribers. I am searching for info on Henry Perkins and Sarah Bryant Hodges. Henry was born somewhere in NC in 1881 and died in Galax Va in 1947. Sarah was born in Carroll Co Va in 1883 and died in 1958 also in Galax. I have found info on Sarah but have found next to jack on Henry. I do know that his parents were Perkins and Elizabeth Hodges but I have no dates or places for them. Any help would be appreciated. Don't remember exactly. I am certain that he lived in Itawamba Co. of MS from about 1841 or thereabouts until he died after the 1860 Fed. Census for Itawamba MS. After the Civil War,(about 1868) his wife leaves MS for Johnson Co, TX with her son, Dennis Newton Hodges and wife Sarah Jane Walker with about twelve (12) wagons of friends and/or family from the Itawamba area. This fact is published in the "History of Johnson County (TX) in the information furnished by Betty Burr (a former Pres. of the TX state genealogical assn.) in her article on "The Walker Family". I do have a copy of the Civil War service record of Lt. D.N. Hodges who served in the 10th MS Cav. Also, in that outfit was his brother Edmund Hodges who was a Sgt. Dennis was a POW at the end of the war and was incarcerated at Beaufort, SC. It is said that when he returned home with torn and tattered clothing and long beard, the occupants of his home were afraid and ran and hid in the chicken house and/or the barn because they did not recognize him. I thought the same as you about the j may be an I. for Isaac. reason is parks sent me this info last year about an Isaac and i have not been able to follow it up. Isaac Hodges 1785 John Hodges of SC appears as legal representative of Isaac Hodges of Essex County, VA John Hodges 1794 Will in Essex County, VA; This was all he told me. There are several names in your line that are similar to mine. do you have any data on WARREN name - where they are from? and where in GA was Rebecca Warren born? just wondering why you think Isaac was born in Abbeville? i was looking thru my old msgs trying to separate all the Hodges of SC and came across your post. below. I was wondering if this book deals with MORGANS. I have some Morgan gps m. to Quinn in Pike Co. MS. Quinns from NC/SC. can you please tell me where was this Henry Hodges from? one msg said prob. born in Cokesbury SC. where is that? and what was its name before? thanks, josie At 10:55 AM 2/20/98 -0600, Gerry Hackley wrote: >This is the Hodges from the book (page 393) of Nell Hodges Howard >and Bessie W. My GGG-Grandfather was Isaac Hodges who was married to Rebecca McClain, daughter of William McClain and Rebecca Warren. Isaac is thought to have been born in 1790 Abbeville Dist., SC and Rebecca was born 1805 in Georgia. I believe that they had nine (9) children which are as follows: Sally Hodges Liza Louise b. about 1821 ? Mary Hodges b. 1824 circa m. Asa Hill Edmond Hodges b. 27 Dec 1824 ? Itawamba Co., MS spouse: Mary Elizabeth Stephens m. 19 Dec 1850 Itawamba Co., MS d. 15 Jun 1896 Itawamba Co., MS DENNIS NEWTON HODGES b. 10 Dec 1831 in TN m. Sarah Jane Walker in Guntown, Itawamba, MS 17 Jan 1850 d. 18 Jan 1887 buried at sea off Seattle , King Co., WA Leatha Jane Hodges b. 11 Nov 1837 Cofffee Co., TN m. 2 Oct 1856 in Itawamba Co., MS sp. Franklin Murrow Herring d. 1913 in Comanche, Comanche Co., TX Benjamin Hodges b. 2 Nov 1842 Narcissus Rebecca Hodges b. 1849 in MS m. 15 Aug 1872 in Johnson Co., TX sp: Sylvester Vespucias Seale Jacob W. Hodges b. 1851
Recently someone mentioned a HODGES line with their children and one name which was difficult to read or part of the page was torn and all they could see was a "J". I am wondering if this might have been mis intrepreted as the cursive "J" frequently is misread as a "J" when it was intended to be an "I". My Great grandfather was an Isaac as was my GGGreat Grandfather and I know that some thought his first initial was a J when it was an "I". Thoughts or comments???? Gerry Hodges Hackley in Houston

Here is the information I have about the Milner Echols History of the family of James and Jesse Hodges: About 1982, Laurent Hodges of Ames, Iowa was in possession of a typescript version. The original was apprently brought to Texas after the War Between the States, probably by the grandson of the author. The history was written by Milner Echols June 14, 1850. The part I have is as follows: A Short History of our family - from the first that landed in America till the present time, as far as I can assertain - John Echols an Englishman came to America about the end of the 16th or beginning of the 17th Century and settled in Carolina County, Virginia and married a tall red-headed woman named Mary Cave - an d by her had 5 sons and 3 daughters. I shall begin with the sons first and carry out their family as far as my knowledge extends- John was his forst son who left Virginia as a young man and settled in the lower part of No. Carolina and raised his family - of whom I know nothing - Abraham was (old John's) second son, married Sarah Tamer and by her had two sons and several daughters. His sons were Joseph and Joshua. Joseph married a mIss King, had by here two sons and 5 or 6 daughters -- his sons Abraham and Jeremiah who left Virginia in the mtime of the Revolutionary War and went to Pennsylvania. Of their offspring I know nothing. Joshua married Hannah Brown and had a number of children, of whom I know but little; he had one son named Dorius, a conspicuous man in Habersham County, Georgia; the rest of the family lives chiefly in the upper part of Georgia. Old Abraham had one daughter married James Hodges, a very worthy man, his family moved to Tennessee. He had one son named Jesse and he [Jesse] had a son named James who was a commonding officer in Tennessee and got drowned int he Cumberland River near Cairo. Jesse had one daughter named Tabitha - that is all I know of the family. Bob Hodges
this question originally came from the Franklin Co., VA list. I think this ties into the Hodges, and I'd appreciate those of you on the Hodges list who've researched the Franklin line(s) adding any comments: My theory here comes from the following marriage bonds: 1. Steagall, David Pinkard and Jane Warren, 4 Aug 1828. Sur. John Dearen. Married by Moses Greer 2. Scott, Michael W. and Sarah K. Steagall, d/o Wm., 19 Oct 1839. Sur. Rivers Steagall. Married by Arnold Walker 3. Steagall, Wm. and Mary Hodges, d/o Abednego, 24 Nov 1804, Sur. Rives Hodges. It's widely accepted that Rives or Rivers Hodges was s/o Abednego Hodges. My guess would be that William Steagall married Mary Hodges. She had a brother, Rives or Rivers, depending on the info you see floating about. William and Mary then had Sarah K. Steagall who m. Michael Scott. Her brother Rives would have been the surety. Secondly, David Pinkard Steagall would have been a good candidate to have been her brother, since he ended up in Rives household in 1870. The surety for David's bond was John Dearen, likely the one who in 1834 married Evalina Belcher d/o Isham. The Belchers and Hodges also intermarried. Any thoughts anyone else? tim -----Original Message----- From: Ktrygal1@aol.com <Ktrygal1@aol.com> To: VAFRANKL-L@rootsweb.com <VAFRANKL-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Tuesday, September 07, 1999 2:39 AM Subject: [VAFRANKL] Drinkard Stegall >I am searching for info on >Drinkard Stegall (Stigal,Steagal, Steagall) He may be David Drinkard Stegall. >Born about 1803 >>From Franklin County,VA. >Married Jane Warren in Franklin County in 1828. > >In the 1870 Franklin County Census there is a Drinkard Stegal in the HH of >Rivers Stegal. >Are they brothers? >Who are their parents? >Siblings? >I would like to find proof of this family and share info. >Thanks, >Donna > > >==== VAFRANKL Mailing List ==== >Planning a Family Reunion?
