Last Will and Testament John Hodges In the name of God Amen. I John Hodges of the State of South Carolina Abbeville District. being weak in body but of sound mind thanks be to almighty God for the same, and knowing the uncertainty of this life and that it is appointed for all men once to die, and being desirous to settle my affairs in order do make this my last Will and testament in manner and form as hereafter mentioned. First I recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God who gave it, hoping to be saved by the precious death and merits of my Saviour Jesus Christ and my body to be buried in such decent and christian like manner as my Executrix and Executor, hereafter mentioned shall think proper. First My will is that all my lawful debts shall be paid. Item I give unto my dear and loving wife Frances Hodges, the plantation I now live on, during her Widowhood, I give her also one Negro man named James, and one Negro Woman Named Harriot, and her increase from after my death, the same Negroes to remain hers during her widow hood, I give her also two choice of horses, two Cows & Calves and two feather beds, Bedsteads & furniture, also two Sows & pigs all her provisions for the first year - I give her also sufficient plantation tools all the above mentioned property to continue hers as above mentioned and after her death, or marriage all the said property with the increase of said Harriot, to return and to be equally divided among my children (excepting my son John and son Armstead Jones) Item I give unto my daughter Malinda one Negro Girl named Mariah and her increase during her life and after her death the said negro Meriah and her increase to be equally divided among her children. Item I give unto my son George Washington one Negro Girl named Dorias with her increase to him and his heirs for ever. Item I give unto my son Gabriel one negro Girl Frances with her increase to him and his heirs for ever. Item I give unto my daughter Drusilla one negro Girl named Amanda with her increase to her and her heirs for ever. Item I give unto my daughter Elizabeth Bowes (sic Bowie's) children Namely Rhoda Frances, Gracy, Matilda, John and James, their Mothers part of my estate to be equally divided among them she bearing an equal part of my estate with the rest of my children. Item I give unto my daughter Sarah one Negro boy named Edward to her and her Heirs for ever. Item I give unto my daughter Margaret one negro boy Henry to her & her heirs for ever. Item I give unto my daughter Mary one Negro boy named Heram to her & her heirs forever. Item I give unto my son Samuel Anderson one negro Girl Mary to him & his heirs forever. Item I give to my daughter Frances one Negro boy named Carolina to her & her heirs for ever. Item I give unto my daughter Huldah one Negro Girl named Mahala to her & her heirs for ever. Item I give to my son Absolum Turner one Negro Girl named Matilda to him & his heirs forever. Item I give to my son Robert Wardlaw one Negro boy Modaua to him & his heirs for ever. Item I give unto my son James one Negro boy named Edmund to him & his heirs for ever. Item I give to my son Benjamin one Negro boy named Hazard to him & his heirs for ever. Item I give to my daughter, Lucy Wardlaw two negroes Adaline & Margaret to her & her heirs forever. Item as I have been at a great deal of expense on the education of my two sons Namely John & Armstead Jones I leave them thirty dollars a pair to be their full portion of my estate. Item my will is that the balance of my estate be sold and equally divided among my children above mentioned excepting my two sons Namely John & Armstead Jones, and I do hereby appoint and ordain my loving Wife Frances Hodges, George W. Hodges & Gabriel Hodges my two sons to be my executrix and Executors of this my last will and testament, and I do revoke renounce and make void all wills formerly made by me, and this to be taken for my last Will and testament. George died 1862 at Antietam wearing a grey uniform. Some relatives were told that a family Bible stated that-..- Simeon Jones was from New York and married to Nancy Driggers. They were the parents of James Alfred Jones-..- That is as close as I have gotten to James's parents. Altho, the names Simon Jones, Mary Driggers and William E Jones have been flashed across my screen a couple of times!!!! James may have had brothers Thomas J, Jerome and Mathew. Story goes that George Rawls took James's place in the CSA and was killed in 1862. James later took up with the USA and took part in some raids along the west coast of Fla. Anyway, he showed back up in Manatee Co in 1870. A "vigilante" group in 1886, with some Rawls boys in tow, confronted James and later hanged him...but he didn't die for two weeks later!!! Mr. Metts - I have long been puzzled by the story of the Indian raid of the John Hodges family in South Carolina and have wanted to know the name of the boy that was fathered by the Indian chief and his mother Dorothy Hodges returned home to Abbeville County and remained there to marry a man named Rosamond. Then from the Moragne Family in America book by Nell Hodges Howard and Bessie W. Quinn, they seem to have no answer to the name of the "indian boy" or where he may have gone. I saw a posting on the GenForum http://genforum.genealogycom/ewing/messages/876.html by William Allison Welker or [email protected] where he states "Indian" John Ewing, my 5G-grandfather, was b. 27 Dec 1747 in Orange Co. NC. At the age of 16 he was taken captive by the Shawnee Indians, led by Chief Cornstalk, in what is known as the Celendennin Massacre, in a raid on a Greenbrier settlement near Lewisburg, W.VA. The indians brought him through Gallia Co. OH to the Indian towns near Chillicothe. John was a captive for 22 months until his release, by treaty in May 1765. John was the son of James Ewing b. 1720 - s/o William ewing b. 1660. On 22 Apr 1774 he married Ann Smith and they had ten children: William, John, Susannah, Sarah, Jeanet, Ann, Andrew, Elizabeth, Lydia, and Samuel. John died 23 Dec 1747 in Vinton, OH, and is bu. in Glenn Cemetery there. Thought this info might spark your interest. It certainly did mine. You probably do not remember but I sent you family group sheets about 1992 or so when we still did "snail mail". My father was Jesse Ewing HODGES, Jr. and of course my Grandfather was Jesse Ewing Hodges. I have been looking for a connection to a Ewing family and feel that I am getting close. OK, I am aware of the marriage of William Hodges (b. about 1827 in ? Franklin Co., TN) to Frances E. McNutt (b. abt 1828 in AL m. 15 Nov 1849 in Itawamba Co., MS) and I believe that this William Hodges is a son of Isaac Hodges & Rebecca McClain. Another son of Isaac & Rebecca, Dennis Newton Hodges was my GG-Grandfather and I have a copy of his marriage certificate to Sarah Jane Walker, d/o Allen Wood Walker & Bethany E. Howard. To me, the interesting note is that the marriage certificate of Dennis N. Hodges & Sarah Jane bears the signature of the Justice of the Peace, William A. Hodges. I believe that this is the one who was referred to as "Uncle Billy". Yes, I suppose that it is possible that McNatt could have been changed to McNutt.
