I am new at these mailing list, and have only been researching for about ten months now. I really need help finding my Hodges line. The information that follows came from my grandmother. All of these people were born in East Tennessee. Probable Sullivan or Washington County. If anyone has John William Hodges (aka Buck) m. Annis Crouch in TN, PLEASE help me. The ten months that I have been working on this family, I haven't found any connection to any other Hodges' lines. John William Hodges (aka Buck) m. Again from the Alice D. Pritchard book "Pioneers of Coffee County Tennessee Their Ancestors and Descendants" - page 54 Alexander Hodge was appointed administrator for the estate of Charles W.L. Hodge. (Oct Court 1854, Pg. 76) Coffee Co. TN.Deed Bk. H, pg. 100 records Articles of agreement between Susan Hodge and Alexander Hodge. Susan surrendered the Farm "on which her late husband Charles Hodge resided, she also agrees to surrender to A. Hodge a note executed to her and her late husband C.L. Hodge, for fifteen hundred dollars given for the two slaves belonging to Mrs. Parkes..." in exchange Alexander promised to pay to her eighty dollars rent for the said farm for one year "and giving to her all the property of every description that she had when she married C.L. Hodge" After his father died, Alexander sold some land to Willis Blanton. The old HODGE family cemetery was on the plot of land sold. Willis Blanton later buried a child slave in the cemetery, which irritated A. Hodge so greatly that he took the case to Coffee Co. Court, where he lost. Alexander Hodge then pursued a verdict in his favor by taking the case to the Supreme Court. (May, 1858) This time he won. A news item (Manchester Times) for Supreme Court Land Sale, 17 May, 1873, adds a twist of irony to the Blanton vs Hodge case just mentioned. Eighty nine (89) acres of the very same plot of land was being sold, in Normandy, Tn. at public auction to the highest bidder, reserving space around the graves of William Hodge and his grand children in the field. This was the result of another court case, "Wm. Frierson & Jno. W. Burton. administrators, VS. Willis Blanton et els. Dec. 1872. The genealogy of Hodge land is interesting. This was part of a land purchase made 8 Jan. 1818. (Bedford Co. Deed Bk. J pg. 177). " submitted by Gerry HODGES Hackley in Houston "Gerry" Hodges Hackley 11714 S. I have just returned from a trip to Nashville and the State Archives & Library there. One very interesting book which I saw there was the "Pioneers of Coffee County Tennessee Their Ancestors and Descendants" compiled by Alice Daniel Pritchard 1996. Ms Pritchard's address is given as 1247 Cinchona, Vista, CA 92083. The Library of Congress catalog card is 94-12045. The above referenced book outlines her HODGE lineage and excellent information about her paternal great grandmother, Ann Hodge (1817-1861); Eleminta "Minta" Hodge (1865-1995); Archibald Hodge (1830-1892) son of Riley Hodge (1808-1839); William Hodge (1783-1853) and John Hodge (ca1785 - ) and Robert Hodge, Jr. On page 52, she says, "All records hint that William-418 and John Hodge-296 were brothers. But who was Isaac Hodge and what were the names of his children? (Listed on Pg. 71, of Bedford Co., 1830, census, no further record.)" I believe that the information she seeks on Isaac Hodge is that he is the one who goes to live in the area of Guntown, Itawamba Co., MS. I believe that he is the same Isaac Hodges who was married to Rebecca McClain of Georgia. This Isaac is in the 1860 Federal Census for Itawamba Co., MS but not 1870. This lineage is on my site at www.hackley.com, click on genealogy, then click on the family info that you want.
