Joseph Collings (Collins ?) is appointed Surveyor of the road leading from Booker's Ferry on Staunton River to this Courthouse, beginning at Bannister extending to the Mill Stone Road, and it is ordered that he with William Pearman, William Beach, William Wilson Holmes, Thomas Hornsby, Frederick Hicks, JAMES HODGES, William Murphy, Edmund Hodges, AMBROSE HODGES (my ancestor), Welcom Hodges, William Lavour, John Rounden, and Peter Tribble do forthwith clear and keep the same in repair according to Law. Inventory of goods for estate of Edward Dean, appraised by James Hodges, Welcome Wm. Hodges, and Joseph Collins, 20th day of August 1761. (Halifax Co., Va.) Exerpted from Milner Echols History of the family of James and Jesse Hodges: About 1982, Laurent Hodges of Ames, Iowa was in possession of a typescript version. The original was apparently brought to Texas after the War Between the States, probably by the grandson of the author. The history was written by Milner Echols June 14, 1850. [[Old English John Echols had three daughters which I could have inserted had I known enough about them to give any satisfactory account of them. I only know they married outlandish men, one an Englishman named Nicholas Gilington. Of their family I know nothing. The second daughter married an Irishman named Murphy. ** We see in other records that William Murphy married a Martha Hodge. Could she have been a widow of another Hodge and born Echols?** I know nothing of their family only they had two sons, Joseph and William, that was called the greatest Baptist preachers that ever was known in Virginia of their day. Old English John Echols third daughter married a Scotchman named Marshbank. I know nothing of their family only the family of Deens in DeKalb and Floyd County sprang from that family. ]] [[ Old Abraham had one daughter married James Hodges, a very worthy man, his family moved to Tennessee. He had one son named Jesse and he [Jesse] had a son named James who was a commanding officer in Tennessee and got drowned in the Cumberland River near Cairo. Jesse had one daughter named Tabitha - that is all I know of the family.]] **Tabitha Hodges married Thomas Barton.** The Bartons mentioned are of one family. Rev. 2. I was wondering if any of you knew who Jesse B. (the son of Jesse and Elizabeth) wife and children were. I have Hodges family that lived in TN and haven't been able to find a connection to any other Hodges family. There is a Jesse Blaine Hodges in my line at a later date that I though may have gotten his name from your Jesse B. Since names were pass down through several generations. Were any of your Hodges from East Tenn? Please let me know if you find anything. Thanks, April from East Tenn. [email protected]

    3. I am in the Hodges line with a John Hodges as my ancestor.. I was reading some of the info you sent me here, and I couldn't help but to be taken by all the things I found similar.. But I know the John you speak of isn't the same John I've studied... fact;;; John Hodges settled near Abbeville SC,,, fact;;; he was in the revolution,,, fact;;; the log cabin where he lived is still standing,,,,, fact;;; the name of the SC plantation is WILDWOOD.... all of this about knocked me out of my seat... I don't know where you got this info, but I'd like for you to check on the name George Washington Hodges ... he was one of the many children of John Hodges... The small town of Hodges SC was named for him.... with all the similarities between your John and my John, I can't help but believe there is a connection somewhere... Thanks for any help you can give..
