    3. Hi April, The earliest Hodge/s in the NE corner of Tennessee arrived in the mid to late 1700's so there were many families after 1800. One of the lines was of Francis Hodge (Irish, b. 1745 d. 1798, my line) in Sullivan Co. and John Hodges (Welsh, b. ca 1740) in Washington Co.. Both had an Annis in the line but can't tell if one is yours. Do you have any additional info that might help me to narrow the choices. Do you live in this area? 3. The Drury Hodges in TN I believe is the Drury married to Diana Griffith in 1800 in Franklin Co. VA. Most of the evidence that I have seems to suggest that he is the Grandson or Great grandson of Thomas and Christian Hodges. Mike Hodge ----- Original Message ----- From: Tony & Linda Kmiecik <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, July 08, 2001 3:06 PM Subject: [HODGES-L] Hodges-Cumberland Co., VA The 7/7 posting by MDHodge of a James Hodges' TN will and information from related documents included a Drury Hodges. I wonder if he could be Drury Hodges, son of Thomas Hodges died 1749/50 in Cumberland Co., VA. This Thomas' November 1749 will (Will Book 1, pp. 6-7) names his wife and executor Christian and children in these groupings: my two sons William and John 400 acres on branches of Willis's Creek to be divided between them, my son Drury, 150 acres of land with the plantation where I now live, my son Thomas 3 cows & calves after the death of my loving wife Christian, to my son Edm'd Hodges 3 cows & calves in like manner, to my daughter Mary Hodges 3 cows & calves in like manner, to my daughter Delany (Hodg?)es 3 cows & calves in like manner. Some additional bequests are made, but the page is torn, making those pretty much illegible. Witnesses were Henry Bell, John Chafin, and William Mills. Christian Hodges came to court and proved the will at March Court, 1750.! The appraisement appears in Will Book 1, pp. 23-24, and was done by Daniel Coleman, Sr., Joseph Terry, and Daniel Coleman, Jr., 21 April 1750. It is believed that some of these Hodges migrated to Halifax Co., VA. An Edmund Hodges appears there in 1756. In the March Court 1758, there is a suit, Christian Hodges, plaintiff, vs. John Trig/Triss. Sheriff having returned the Defendant no inhabitant of the county, same is dismissed (Halifax Co. Court Orders Index to Plaintiffs, and Plea Bk. 2, p. 298). She also witnesses a deed in this period in Halifax Co., but I cannot lay my hands on the citation. A Thomas Hodges (wife Elizabeth), believed to be the son of Thomas and Christian, appears in Halifax Co. from at least 1759 (see Plea Bk. 2, pp. 501-502), the Defendant in numerous actions and suits, often for debt. This Thomas last appears in Halifax Co. in the late 1760s. In 1762 William and John Hodges of Halifax Co. sell tracts in Cumberland Co. inherited from their father Thomas to Thomas Davenport (Cumberland Co. Deed Bk. 3, pp. 301, 483). The deeds state that Thomas Hodges (deceased) acquired the land by paten! t dated 25 Sep 1746. On 7 December 1771 Drury Hodges of Henrico Co., VA sells to Samuel Meredith of Hanover Co. a 150 acre tract in Cumberland Co., VA inherited from his father, part of a 400 acre tract granted to Paul Pig dated 17 Mar 1736 (Cumb. Co. Deed Bk. ____). Can anyone sort out these Drury Hodges men? Linda Kmiecik Other Hodges appearing early in Halifax Co. are Welcome William, James, Robert, Isam/Isham and others. ==== HODGES Mailing List ==== Faye Dyess [email protected] Listmanager Thou shalt include a clear and specific subject line. 3. Phil: Congratulations on getting so far back on your HODGES line. The book which I have in my possession, Genealogical Record of The Hodges Family of New England, ending December 31, 1894 (Third Edition) compiled by Almon D. Hodges, Jr. on page 75 states as follows: "Henry Hodges b. 1652, Taunton, Mass; d. 1717 Sept. 30, Taunton, aged 65; m. 1674 Dec. 17, Taunton, Ester Gallop, dau. of John & Hannah (Lake) Gallop b. 1653 July 21, Taunton. 11 children born in Taunton: Mary Hodges, b. 1675/6 Feb. 3 Esther Hodges, b. 1677/8 Feb. 17 William Hodges, b. 1679/80 March 18 Charity Hodges, b. 1682 April 5 John Hodges, b. 1684 Henry Hodges, b. 1685 or 1686 Joseph Hodges, b. 1688 or 1689 Benjamin Hodges, b. about 1691 Ephraim Hodges, b. about 1693 Elizabeth Hodges Abigail Hodges Henry Hodges lived near the residence of his brother John. His house, it is stated in the first edition of this genealogy, was "within a few yards of the place where a red school house stood in 1820. At that time there were some indications on the surface of the earth of the spot where the cellar had been." The site of the red school house, on High street, opposite the Central Railroad Station is now occupied by the old Niagara Engine House, used at present as a ward room, and during the winter months, the Niagara Evening School is held here. The exact location of Henry Hodges's house is difficult to fix. Henry Hodges certainly owned the ground here, and the city authorities have placed on the engine house a tablet inscribed "Homestead of Elder Henry Hodges, 1681-1717." From an examination of the ground, a consideration of the manner in which the roads were laid out in this vicinity and the testimony of persons (some now deceased) who have been well acquainted with the locality for many years, it seems probably that Elder Henry's house stood where the freight house of the railroad now stands, on the corner of Tremont and Oak streets. Henry Hodges was a leading man in all the affairs of the settlement. He was Captain of the military company, held the highest town offices for very many years, and was a deacon and Presiding Elder of the church, occupying, it is said, a seat in the pulpit with Rev. Samuel Danforth. He acquired a large amount of real estate, and his farm of "Crooked Meadow," at Burt's Brook, adjoining the boundary line of Norton and Taunton, is often referred to in the records. He was administrator of a large number of estates, and from his prominence in the matter of allotment of lands, it would seem that he was a surveyor. He was on a coroner's jury at court held at Plymouth, Oct. 30, 1678, and on the Grand Jury, June 6, 1683. In 1681 he was appointed constable at Taunton. He was selectman for 28 years (1687 to 1701, 1703 to 1709, 1711 to 1716), was member of the Town Council 2 years (1689, 1690), and represented Taunton in the General Court 5 years (1704, 1713, 1715, 1716 and 1717). His name appears, April 8, 1682, in the roster of the 3rd squadron of the military company, ordered to bring arms to church on Sundays. He was elected Ensign of the First Military Company in March, 1690, when the town was greatly excited over the question as to who should command the company. At some undetermined date prior to 1703, the Second Military Company was organized. He was the first captain of his company and retained command until 1714. He was a subscriber to the fund for the Canada Expedition of 1690 under Sir William Phipp. When the North Precinct of Taunton was established, although he had been opposed to the separation, he donated land as an inducement for a minister to settle in the new parish. He was a shareholder in the first Taunton iron works. He was buried in the "Neck of Land Burying Ground," where is still to be seen his gravestone inscribed, "Here lies the body of Elder Henry Hodges. Died Sept. 30, 1717. Aged 65 years." submitted by "Gerry" HODGES Hackley in Houston At 05:04 PM 7/8/2001 -0700, you wrote: >My Hodges line: > >Henry Hodges / Esther Gallop >Benjamin Hodges / Abiah Deane >Ephraim Hodges / Rachel Cox >Ephraim Hodges / 1st: Lola ______ 2nd: Katherine Johnson >(Moved first to Vt., then to Broome Co., NY) >Benjamin Hodges / Laura Page >Daniel Hodges / Aurena Loghry >Laura Hodges / Wilson Marsh (migrated to Steuben Co., NY) >Donna Ward / Glenn B. According to the family lore in my branch, Frank Cheatam Hodges remarried after Stella Heath died in 1922 to a "Miss Anna" who had three children of her own prior to the marriage. Miss Anna was apparently not too fond of the Hodges children and ran them all off the farm, except Frances, who she kept on to help in the kitchen. Frances died in her teens; according to my grandfather L.D. Hodges, her death was a result of the severe and frequent beatings doled out by Miss Anna. I have a Hodges family history written by my father, Robert Louis Hodges, which contains much more info about the above descendants of Frank Cheatam Hodges (which is as far back as he had traced). It's not too great for dates and places, but it's a fun read for the Hodges folklore. 3. The 7/7 posting by MDHodge of a James Hodges' TN will and information from related documents included a Drury Hodges. Christian Hodges came to court and proved the will at March Court, 1750. Deed Bk. 3, pp. 301, 483). The deeds state that Thomas Hodges (deceased) acquired the land by patent dated 25 Sep 1746.

    3. Thanks for your reply this morning (Sunday) regarding Jesse Hodges. I am descended from William Cayson's brother, Josiah B. b. 12-22-1782 in Pittsylvania Co., Va. He married Mary Wilson in 1807 then Mary Patton in 1839. Josiah d. 10-11-1851 in Henderson Co., Tn and is buried in the Hodges Cemetery in Chester Co., Tn. You may already have this info. I am further descended from Josiah B. Hodges son William J. Hodges and from William's son, Ludie. (My mother was Lucile Elizabeth Hodges, b. 1899; d. 1985.) The only thing I have on William Cayson is b. 9-22-1778. Nothing more. I would appreciate any information you have on any and all of these Hodges including Jesse's father and mother, James and Martha Elizabeth Echols. Also, the only thing I have on Elizabeth Collins (Jesse's wife) is b. 8-28-1760 in Pittsylvania, Va; d. 1-6-1842 in McNairy Co., Tn Her father was William Collins and mother was Mary (unk surname). I think this is correct, but I have no more data. Thanks very much. Charles M Duncan
