    1. [HODGES-L] HODGES of New York & New England
    2. Eva Kinnard
    3. Trying again on message I tried to post Saturday: I don't have any proof, but believe my HODGES ancestors may also descend from the New England line -- and may be closely related to Ezekiel who settled in Hoosick, Rensselaer Co, NY. My gggg grandfather William HODGES was born ca 1762/3; was head of a household in Hoosick, Rensselaer Co, NY, in 1800; briefly lived somewhere in Canada; but was in Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co, PA, by 1810. He moved to Warren Co, PA, by 1816, built the Warrren Co. Courthouse ca. 1826, and died in Warren Co. in 1837. William HODGES was married to Eleanor (CORNWELL?) ca 1791 or earlier, probably in New York. Eleanor was born 3 March 1776 in New York. Their children included: Ruby Eliza HODGES, Derrick G. HODGES, Walter W. HODGES, John Bryant HODGES, and Amos B. HODGES. 1- Ruby Eliza HODGES was born 4 Oct 1792, married ___ DUGAL, and died 10 Aug 1815 in PA (a few days after the birth of her daughter Ruby DUGAL). 2- Derrick G. HODGES was born 22 Sep 1795 in NY, lived in Warren Co, PA, until 1840 or later, then moved to Richland Co, OH. He and his wife Sarah had several children. Derrick died sometime after 1860. 3- Walter W. HODGES was born 22 June 1797 in NY, and died 24 Sep 1863 in Warren Co, PA. His wife was Marvel Bowers JACKSON. 4- John Bryant HODGES was born ca 1799/1801 in NY, and died 2 June 1880 in Warren Co, PA. He and wife Rachel FOUNTAIN had seven children. 5- A son born in 1804 and died in 1807 was given the name Amos HODGES. (Another son born after his death was given the same name.) 6- Amos B. HODGES was born ca 27 July 1812 (probably in PA). He married Sarah DEEN (DEAN?) in Morgan Co, OH, in 1832, and was living (in Burnet?) near Atchison, KS, in 1858. His whereabouts after that are unknown. Does anyone have any information on this HODGES line? I would especially like to find something linking William HODGES to his ancestors and other relatives. Thanks. Eva

Their daughter Lillian Jane HODGES possibly lived in or near No. Stockholm NY and married Julius CHAPMAN (b 1841 No. Stockholm NY) in MN in 1867 at her age 14. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Diana Chapman Owen

    2. To Bill Hodges in Virginia. Thanks for the feedback-- I don't see any names that connect to my Hodge line but as you know the (s) seems to come and go like the wind. My Grandfather, Levi J. Hodge told my dad that his family was "from the Carolina's" as well. Unfortunately I have not been able to get back any further than the Shadrach in Western Ky. There is a strong possibility that he was one of 3 brothers named from the old Testiment, Shadrach, Meshach and Abendago, Any of those names tie to your line? I will keep your Phone and Address on file. Really appreciated the short biography of your living in the Mo. area. Take care, Bill Hodge St. Charles Mo.

    1. [HODGES-L] Missing Message
    2. Eva Kinnard
    3. I haven't seen the message I sent Saturday, October 6, although I've received copies of others posted Sunday. I tried to check for it on the archives, but the last messages there were posted in September. Is there any way now to look at the messages posted during the current month? Should I post my message again? and do you have any idea why it might not have appeared? I know I pressed SEND because a copy appeared in my SENT box. It was properly addressed, but I didn't include HODGES-L in the subject line. Would that have caused the problem? Thanks for your help. Eva

They had 11 children: Mary, Esther, William, Charity, Henry, Benjamin who died at sea, Joseph a major in the army, John, Ephraim, Elizabeth and Abigail. My line goes: William, (1) John, (2) Samuel, (3) Samuel, (4) Simon, (5) Samuel, (6) Samuel, (7) Dewitt, (8) James (9) Nola (10) Frances (11) I will be going to Kansas the end of the month and hopefully I can ask my mother more about the Hodges Family. My mother is nearly 93 years old but she remembers so much when she was a young lady and when she got married. Her short term memory is not good. The Hodges came from Bristol and Tauntan England and settled in Massachuetts and co owner of the Tauntan Iron Works. Have you seen the book by Almond D. Hodges? Hope this is of some help. I have quite a bit more but have to get it all back in order as in moving things got disarrayed. 3. Hi Gerry, Remember what I said was the definition of an expert. [a has-been drip under pressure] I have quite a bit on the Tauton Hodges but I've never seen proof that any of them ever lived in Virginia, although others have claimed it. It may be true but I don't vouch for it. An early reference says that the first record of a Hodges in America appears in the records of Tauton Mass in 1643. This reference was to Captain William Hodges and his wife Mary Andrews, who was a shipmaster born in England. They had two sons, John and Henry. HOGG FAMILY 1. Hannah Hogg, born perhaps 1750, the servant of Stephen Phillips, was the mother of "Mulatto" children: Tom, Cary, Bill, and Leah who were ordered brought to court in April 1775 so they could be bound apprentice in Cumberland County, North Carolina [Minutes 1772-76, 41; 1777-82, 79]. On 18 June 1808 the court bound Elizabeth Campbell, a two-year-old "orphan of Colour," to him as an apprentice. His heir was probably Lam(?) Hogg, head of a Cumberland County household of 9 "free colored" in 1820 [NC:155]. ii. Cary, 23 September 1769. iii. ?Cader, born perhaps 1772, a "mulatto man" who was released from Angus and William Philips' service in Cumberland County on 16 January 1794 when he proved that the was born free of a white woman [Minutes 1791-97]. iv. The 8 October 1799 Robeson County Court bound Elizabeth Hogg, a three-year-old girl, to her.
