Halifax County, Virginia We have two deeds from Cumberland County, Va., that we know are from the sons of Thomas Hodges who died in Cumberland County, Va., in 1749, because the deeds dispose of land left to these two sons in Thomas's will. In the deeds, John and William are described as being "of Halifax County". We have to look at the other early records of Halifax County and some related records to see what they can tell us about Thomas, William, and John. I have used the detailed compilation by Linda Kmiecik for the following. June 28, 1734 Anne, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Hodges, christened in Bristol Parish, Prince George Co., Va. Cumberland County, North Carolina I had said before that I thought the following 1735-41 records dealt with the same Thomas Hodges: Sept. 13, 1735 patent of Benjamin Soul 320 ac. Bladen Co. South west side of North West Branch of North West River, joining Mrs. Plumer, Thos. Hodges and the river. Patent Book 3, page 351. [The North West River is the Cape Fear. Hard to locate this without more, but read on. The southwest side of the North West River would seem to refer to a location west of the main branch of the Cape Fear. The other branch is still called the Northeast Cape Fear River.] Sept. 15, 1735 patent of Benjamin Soule 320 ac. Bladen Co. South west side of North West Branch of North West River, joining Mrs. Plumer, Thos. Hodges and the river. Patent Book 3, page 351. Mar. 7, 1736/37 patent of Thomas Hodges 120 ac. in B. precinct on West side of North West River above Swann's Creek joining Nath. Platt. Patent Book 3, page 329. [There is no Swanns Creek in Powell's North Carolina Gazetteer, but there is a Swans Creek on the west side of the Cape Fear in modern Cumberland County, just above the Bladen line, that may be this one. It is near where Cumberland, Robeson and Bladen meet. The closest town appears to be St. Pauls]. New Hanover (N.C.) Deed Book C, page 83. [This probably refers to Long Creek west of Rocky Point in present day Pender Co., but there is a Long Creek that flows into Swan Creek in present day Cumberland County. In 1740, however, Bladen County had already been divided from New Hanover. This occurred in 1734. So while the Cumberland location is more compatible with Thomas Hodges' involvement, the geographical clues point to the location near Wilmington.] Nov. 20, 1740 deed from James Innis of New Hanover to John Smith of Bladen for L100 640 aces in Bladen South West side of river 20 mi. above Rockfish Creek adjoining upper side, Thomas Jones' corner. Wit. Thomas Hardjes. Acknowledged Sept. 22, 1747. Cumberland Co. (N.C.) Deed Book 4, page 434. [This is the most interesting and may suggest that all of these are related to the same Thomas Hodges. There are two Rockfish Creeks. The two patents below are on the one that is a tributary of the Northeast Cape Fear River (itself a tributary of the main Cape Fear River) in modern Duplin County. The other, probably the one mentioned here, flows into the Cape Fear itself near Fayetteville. Not 20 but may 25 or 30 miles above the mouth of the latter Rockfish is the area where Thomas and William Hodges are found -- the Lower Little River and Upper Little River, which are two different tributaries of the Cape Fear. So this may indicate that Thomas Hodges was in the area as early as 1735 or 1740. These records show a pattern of settlement in the area along the Cape Fear River from present-day St. Pauls up into the watershed of the Little Rivers and over into the Deep River watershed towards Chatham (then Orange) County]. . May 22, 1741 patent of Thomas Hodges 200 ac. New Hanover County on a branch of Rockfish Creek at a place called Iron Mine between Jones and Cummings land. Patent Book 8, page 99. [Bladen County was formed from New Hanover in 1734. If the original entries were made in 1734 or before, they might still show New Hanover County.] Apr. 19, 1745 patent of Jacob Wells 300 ac. in New Hanover County near a branch of Rockfish Creek at a place called Iron Mine and a point near Thomas Hodges. Patent Book 5, page 331. [Present day Duplin County near Wallace.] I think the first two records refer to the Swanns Creek patent of 1737. Patent dates may vary from the time of actual claim to or residence on the land, due to the length of time required to complete all the paperwork for the grant. So these records seem to show that Thomas Hodges was living on the Cape Fear by 1735, and was there intermittently until at least The Duplin County records may relate to this Thomas or to a different person entirely. Someone will need to check the deed records to see when that property was sold to see if the records suggest that we are dealing with one man. Orange County, North Carolina Now here is where I think things get interesting. We have seen William and Thomas Hodges acquiring land from the Cape Fear up toward the Deep River in present-day Lee County. The next county to the north is Chatham, which, along with part of Lee County, was Orange County before 1771. The earliest deed books of Orange County, North Carolina, are lost (I think the story is that they were buried to save them from Cornwallis in 1781 and got wet and deteriorated). Anyway, all that is left is the register of deeds, but that includes these records: Dec. 14, 1756: Bartholomew Hodges to Henry Shaddock sale of 200 acres May 14, 1765: James Ray to Teasley Hodges sale of 60 acres wit: Charles Clanton Aug. 13, 1765: Bartholomew Tucker to Thomas Hodges sale of 100 acres wit: John Brantley So we have Thomas and Bartholomew showing up in Cumberland and Orange (N.C.), in circumstances that I think suggest that the two families may be one and the same. So I would hypothesize that the William and Thomas who appear in the Cumberland County records are the William and Thomas who are the sons of Thomas Hodges who died in Cumberland County, Va. in 1749. That would lead to the further hypothesis that the John Hodges of Marlboro County who is known to be related to William (probably his brother) is the son John in Thomas's 1749 will. We also find Bartholomew in Halifax County, Virginia, where we also encounter several children named in Thomas's will.. March Court 1755. Bartholomew Hodges to work on the Road from Joseph May's to John Law's in Bannister, with others, under John Anderson, surveyor appointed. Halifax Co., Va. Pleas Book, #2, Part 1, Pg 10. Halifax County, Virginia Pleas Book #4, Pg 32, May Court 1763. Mary Echols, Adm. of Isaac Echols decd pltf. against William Murphy, Bartholomew Hodges deft., on a petition. Suit dismissed, the Co-Defendants not being summoned. We have some additional evidence of the relation of this family to North Carolina. About 1756, William Murphy moved to Orange County, N.C. William Murphy married a Hodges (probably a daughter of Welcome William). He transferred land for which he had received a patent dated March 4, 1756, in three deeds: July 8, 1756 William Murphy of Orange Co., in the Province of North Carolina, to William Laws of Halifax Co., Colony of Virginia, for L12 , 100 acres on the north side of Banister River part of a patent of greater quantity dated March 4, 1756, beginning on sd river. Wit. George Watkins, Isaac Eckhols, Thomas (T) Smith. Rec. Aug. 19, 1756. Halifax Co. (Va.) Deed Book 1, page 199. July 8, 1756 William Murphy of Orange Co., North Carolina, to Thomas Smith of Halifax Co., Virginia, for L17, 100 acres on the north side of Banister River part of a patent of greater quantity dated March 4, 1756, beginning nr the sd river. Wit. Geroge Watkins, Chesley Davis, Wm. Roysdon, William (x) Laws. Rec. Aug. 19, 1756. Halifax Co. (Va.) Deed Book 1, page 203. July 8, 1756 William Murphy of Orange Co., North Carolina, to George Watkins of Halifax Co., Virginia, for L30 paid by sd George Watkins to Welcom William Hodges & aforesaid William Murphy, 200 acres on the south side of Banister River (the river being the division line from the part sold to William Laws), beginning at a red oak on the river. Wit. Thos. Watkins, Wm. Roysdon, Chisley Davis, William Laws. Rec. Nov. 19, 1756. Halifax Co. (Va.) Deed Book 1, page 223. Welcome William left Halifax County and moved to North or South Carolina. My contention is that he returned befor emoving west, first to what is now Franklin County, Virginia, then to Surry County, North Carolina about 1770. Other shave a different interpretation. This record is listed to show the connection of the Hodges family of Halifax to the Carolinas. Aug. 26, 1757 Welcom William Hodges of Carolina Province, to Edmund Hodges of Halifax Co. for L8, 100 acres on both sides of Bradleys Cr, being part of a patent of 430 acres granted to him by patent 10 September 1755, which part is bounded, beginning at James Hodges corner. Wit. Joseph Collins, Peter Trible, Lucy (x) Collins. Rec. Nov. 17, 1757. Halifax Co. (Va.) Deed Book 1, page 354. We also have a record (which, like the record above, names the Collins, who intermarried with the Hodges in Halifax), that shows a transaction between a grantor from Cumberland County, North Carolina and a grantee from Amelia County, Virginia, for land in Halifax County, North Carolina (in this case on the Staunton River in present-day Pittsylvania County). Note that this is the same basic route we postulate for Thomas Hodges (generally, U.S. 501 from South Boston to Pittsboro, N.C., then N.C. 87 into Harnett and Cumberland Counties). Oct. 13, 1763 Zachariah Green of the Carolina Province, Cumberland Co. to John Chisum of Amelia Co., Va. for L45, one certain tract or parcel of land on Stanton River opposite to the Long Island adjoining the land first surveyed and granted by patent to Joseph Collins. Wit. Joseph Collins, James Collins, John Hurt. Rec. Feb. 16, 1764. Halifax Co. (Va.) Deed Book 5, page 7. So, my theory is that these records show that there is a connection between William and Cumberland, and Thomas moving back and forth between Amelia and Halifax Counties in Virginia, and Cumberland County, North Carolina. The relation between this William and John is based on the Revolutionary War pension declaration of Philemon Hodges, a son of William Hodges of Cumberland County, North Carolina: The following is from the pension application of Philemon Hodges, born 1760, Cumberland Co., NC. S32326, Applied Baldwin County, GA.Frame 859: "In April 1776 John Hodges my cousin living near Long Bluff, So Ca came to my father's house in No C., a recruiting officer. my brother William, George Draughan & Robert Draughan & myself enlisted & went with him to his father's house in So Ca thence to Nilson's ferry Santee River, about forty miles from Charleston. There we joined Col Thompson's regiment, was sworn in for six months service, remained there for a few days then we ------the return of the soldiers, who having gone home on a furlough as I understand returned, the said John Hodges and his bros Edmund and Joseph being part of the company, we marched near Charleston to a place called the Ten Mile House and remained there a few weeks. We then marched to the city & on boats went to Sullivan's Island in the night. Our regiment was stationed on the lower end of the Island. etc." Philemon does not specifically give the name of his cousin's father, so the idea that it was John Hodges is based on several inferences. First is that by "cousin" he means first cousin. The fact that it is John is inferred from several records. First, we have the Cheraw District jury lists of 1779 and 1783. In 1779, we have Isham, John, John Senr., John Junr., Richard, and William. In 1783, we have John (Cashaway), Robert (Cashaway), and Wilson (possibly an error for Welcome). In my opinion, the evidence for which we will explore below, Isham, John and William are from the Cumberland/Virginia branch, while John Senr., John Junr., and Richard are from the Beaufort County, North Carolina branch. Then we have this record: Page 238 "St David's Parish [S.C.], August 8th, 1775." "Whereas, I, John Mitchell, of Meldrum, in the said parish, merchant, having sent three judgment bonds to Thomas Phepoe, Esq., to be by him entered up, and having received three executions of the said gentleman in may last, one of which has been since personally served by the Sheriff on John and Bartholomew Hodges, and one other on Enoch James, contrary to the Resolves of the first session of the Provincial Congress..............." Thus, in all three places, we find Bartholomew. We have seen how William Hodges had land up toward what is now Chatham (then Orange) County, N.C., and Thomas acquired land in Orange County. So how about this one? Oct. 1, 1789 Isom Hodge of Marlborough Co., S.C. to Richason Swaner of Chatham Co. for L200 a tract lying on the west side of Rocky River formerly granted to Moses Gin and David Pone 100 acres. Wit. James Lawrence, John Hurly. Chatham Co. (N.C.) Deed Book D, page 616. The west side of Rocky River doesn't narrow this down much. It could be almost anywhere along the River. But it is tempting to think it might be the same 100 acres Thomas Hodges acquired in 1765. I found two other Hodges connections in Chatham County. Welcome Hodges was a witness to the will of James Anderson in 1793: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/nc/chatham/wills/jamandwi.txt Edmond Hodges was a Revolutionary soldier from Chatham County. He does not tell who his father was, but when he moved to West Tennessee, one of his neighbors was Wade H. Hodges from Pittsylvania County, greatgrandson of Edmund Hodges, who is generally thought to be the Edmund named in Thomas Hodges' will in Cumberland Co., Va. in 1749. Wade H. was the son of Polly Hodges and grandson of Jesse Hodges, b. ca. 1814. In his will dated Jan. 20, 1816, proved Feb. 19, 1816 (11 Pittsylvania Co. Deeds & Wills 430), Jesse names his seven children: Dorcas Parrish, Susannah Grubbs, Polly, Nephanah Bowling, Nancy Hundley, James, and Sally Grubbs. Wade m. Nancy W. Giles Nov. 15, 1838. While he did not identify his family, Edmund did relate the places in which he had lived: B. 3/20/1756 in Chatham Co., NC. and lived there until 1772 in 1782 moved to Jefferson Co., Tn. until 1794 in 1794 moved to Bedford Co., Tn. until 1829 in 1829 moved to Obion Co., Tn. where he applied on 10/9/1833 Next we need to closely analyze the records from Halifax County, Virginia.
Cumberland County, North Carolina Here is the list of records I have on the Cumberland County Hodges family. I have more, but I will concentrate on the ones that give the locations, dates, and possible relationships. As noted above, the first record of William Hodges in this area is in 1747. The first record of Thomas Hodges is in 1744, although there are records back to 1735 naming a Thomas Hodges that may be the one we are seeking. The following are the Cumberland records: William Hodges and William Dawson 1751 entry Bladen Co. south side of Deep River about 1 1/4 miles above its mouth and up sd river. The area where they settled was largely populated by Highland Scots who came directly from Scotland, so the tradition of a different origin has some significance. Next, some earlier records from this area.
Northampton County, North Carolina In looking for the origin of the Hodges of Cumberland County, North Carolina, I found a William a little way north in Northampton County. The earliest record I have is for this William Hodge serving as an appraiser in Bertie County in 1730 for 200 acres of land on the Occaneche Neck. My reference looks like Bertie Co. (N.C.) Deed Book C, page 366. The other appraisers are James Millikin, John Law, John Bobbit, George Smith, Andrew Ireland, Peter Jones, and William Baldwin. Northampton County was part of Bertie until 1741. By 1739, William Hodges acquired land in Ocaneechee Neck. This is on the north side of the Roanoke River about six or eight miles below Roanoke Rapids-Weldon. William and Ann Hodges sold this land in 1752. Patent Book 8, page 44 June 6, 1739 Robert Forster 300 acres Bertie Co. on Oconechey swamp adj. William Hodges, Gildon's line, Cypress Swamp and Oconechey swamp. William Hodge (W his mark) was a witness to a deed from Rowland and Phillis Williams of Northampton County to Captain Anthony Robinson of York County, Virginia for a hundred acres on the north side of Moratoke River and west side of Oconeeche Swamp joining Robert Sims, Mr. William Little, decd., the gum pond, the swamp, part of a patent to William Brown decd. For 600 acres granted 5 March 1742. Registered Nov. Ct. 1741. The reference appears to be Northampton County (NC) Deed Book1, page 1. The reference is page 77. William's wife Ann may have been a Brooks. In his 1769 will, William Brooks names his daughter Anne Hodges and grandchildren Richard, Mary and Betty Hodges. Other legatees are daughter Joyce Brooks, son William Brooks, and daughter Elizabeth Bourum. Northampton County Will Book 1, page 165. Hoffman, Northampton County, North Carolina, 1759-1780 Genealogical Abstract of Wills, page 26. I have seen unsourced representations that Thomas Hodges was born in Northampton County in 1747 and died in 1816: http://www.angelfire.com/ar2/pbrooks/CThompson.html This site states that Mary Hodges, daughter of Thomas Hodges, born 1769 in Northampton County, North Carolina, and died 1848, Dickson County, Tennessee, married Charles Thompson, Dec. 23, 1786 in Northampton County. http://www.angelfire.com/ar2/pbrooks/CThompson.html Thomas was a witness to the will of Henry Meachum in Northampton County in 1804, proved in Northampton County in 1809. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~dwhisent/meacham/d1978.htm These records suggest that William was born by 1709 (at least 21 in 1730). The area in which he was living suggests he may have come from Isle of Wight Co., Va., but I do not find any record that connects him to that family. Richard is a name that is rare (almost unheard of) in the Cumberland/Marlboro and the Franklin/Pittsylvania/Halifax families. So I think this a dead end. The Northampton family interested me because there is some connection between the Cumberland County family and Granville County, North Carolina. Philemon Hodges, the son of William Hodges of North Carolina, married Winifred Kittrell, and Philemon's brother Joseph lived in Granville County for a while. The best site for collected information on the Hodges families of Cumberland County, North Carolina, and Marlboro County, South Carolina, is Josie Bass' My Southern Family: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mysouthernfamily/ I will refer to it extensively in this discussion. Phillemon Hodges wrote to his grandson James Phillemon Hodges on 22 May 1839 shortly before his death. Three Hodges brothers came over from England. One settled in Virginia, one settled in Eastern NC and one William from whom we are descended settled near Kittrell Springs. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mysouthernfamily/myff/d0019/g000008 7.html#I43650 Kittrell Springs, now more commonly called Kittrell, is in Vance County, North Carolina, about five miles south of Henderson. Until Vance County was formed in 1881, it was part of Granville County, North Carolina, since 1746. The Hodges in Granville County Moses Hodges was a witness a grant from Lord Granville to James Pace, Nov. 28, 1760, for 425 aces in the Granville District in the Parish of St. John on the east side of Sols Creek. Patent Book 14, number 2588. Hoffman, The Granville District of North Carolina, Vol. 2, page 137. Moses Hoges was a witness to a grant from Lord Granville to James Pace, Nov. 27, 1760, for 225 acres in the Granville District in the parish of St. John on the west side of Haw Tree Creek. The record shows the land surveyed for Solomon Pace deceased but the grant made out to James Pace his heir at law. Patent Book 14, page 14. Hoffman, The Granville District of North Carolina, Vol. 2, page 130. Joseph Hodges (1 white) appears on the Granville County tax list of 1769. Ray, Granville County Kinfolks, page 274. Here is a site with a number of Granville County tax lists. None of them contain anyone named Hodge or Hodges. http://www.mindspring.com/~baumbach/index.html Here is another list. http://members.aol.com/vafdking/grantax1.htm Again, though, there is nothing we can connect directly to either of the two families in question. So where do the Cumberland County, NC Hodges fit in?

HUNTSVILLE RES.LIST 1819 This is likely William of Lawrence County, and his son Fleming, but who are the others? All of them have something in common. They are part of the Sims Settlement, the "Intruders". Here are a couple of links that give a lot of information on this group: http://www.tngenweb.org/giles/history/1809.html http://www.tngenweb.org/giles/history/1810pet.html So there are at least two other Hodge/Hodges families in the Sims Settlement. One is James and Rachel Hodges. Other information tells us that James and Rachel came from South Carolina. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mysouthernfamily/myff/d0068/g000004 7.html#I25987 This may be the James Hodges of Marlboro County, South Carolina, who asked to be excused from court to join his wife Rachel in 1790. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mysouthernfamily/myff/d0068/g000004 7.html#I25987 Just to continue this line a little, James and Rachel's son Hezekiah Claibourn Hodges moved to Union County, Illinois. http://www.iltrails.org/Jackson/deg1b.htm Here is a link to the archives showing that other Hodges from Goochland County, Virginia, also moved to Union County, Illinois. http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ifetch2?/u1/textindices/H/HODGES+1997+ 8942615016+MESSAGE-BODY The other Hodges in Madison County, Alabama, is Johnson Hodges. We know that Johnson Hodges came from Goochland or Cumberland County, Virginia and was the son of Johnson Hodges and Lucy Page. Here is some information on this family from the archives of this list: Lucy Page b. ca.1735 md. c1755 (by Rev. William Douglas) Johnson Hodges (b. ca. 1735 d. intestate 11/25/1771 in Cumberland Co., Va. per Va. Court Order Book 1770-1772, p. 369; inv. returned Apr. 27, 1772 - Cumberland Co. (Va.) Elizabeth Mulles (Mullins?) The latter Johnson thus appears to be the one in the Sims Settlement records. Could the son of Johnson Hodges and Lucy Page, William Hodges, born 1757, be William of the Sims Settlement and later of Lawrence County, Alabama? Douglas Fuller pegged William's birthdate as 1754, probably based on his son John being born in 1775. If William was 18 instead of 21 when his eldest was born, he fits. It would make sense that they would be part of the Sims Settlement together. If someone knows more about Johnson and William, the sons of Johnson Hodges and Lucy page, I would like them to post it. Here is a link to a post about Lucy Page Hodges. This seems to indicate that there is deed from all of her children for the property that she purchased in Goochland after Johnson's de ath, after her death in 1805. http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ifetch2?/u1/textindices/H/HODGES+1998+ 11612851841+MESSAGE-BODY We know from the war record of William Hodges of Lawrence County, Alabama, that he was in South Carolina in 1778 and 1780. Some researchers have identified William with the William that married Elizabeth Cocke in Goochland County, but here is link to a post that says that William is from another family and which Elizabeth William married is unknown. http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ifetch2?/u1/textindices/H/HODGES+2000+ 13193218826+MESSAGE-BODY William of Lawrence County, Alabama is said to have married Elizabeth Kirby, daughter of Francis Kerby. This has been used to connect William to Franklin County, Virginia, where one or more of the several Francis Kerbys lived. But one of those returned to Fluvanna County (the next county west of Goochland) about the period we would expect William and Elizabeth to have married. I simply don't have enough information to sort out the Francis Kerbys. I point this out to show that the idea that William came from Goochland County is a realistic one. In fact, here is a link that relates that one of the Kerby lines moved to Greenville County South Carolina, after the Revolution, and then on to Sumner County, Tennessee, where they intermarried with the Hodges that moved there from Franklin County. (scroll down to Thomas Kerby in America - II): http://members.tripod.com/~adriannehopkins/va-halif.htm Here is another link from the same site giving more information, some of it contradictory, on the Kerbys: http://members.tripod.com/~adriannehopkins/va-hanov.htm The last one suggests that there was an elder Francis Kerby in Goochland-Albemarle and a younger (son of John) in Franklin-Pittsylvania. It also relates movement to Greenville County, South Carolina, where William Hodges spent some time during and shortly after the Revolution. But it is clear from the following records that the Francis Kerby north of the James R iver had real estate interests in Franklin County: Henry County Deed Book 2, page 480, Nov. 23, 1784: Francis Kerby of the County of Fluvanna to Bottom Estes of Henry County for one hundred pounds 275 acres of land being on the head of Bull Run, joins Davis's line. Wit: Jesse Kerby, Stephen Loy, James Hubbard. Henry County Deed Book 2, page 492, Nov. 23, 1784: Francis Kerby of the County of Fluvanna to Stephen Loy of Henry County for one hundred pouns sells a parcel of land containing 214 acres more of less lying on Olcat fork of Winns Creek. Wit: Jesse Kerby, Bottom Estes, James Hubbard. [actually on Polecat Branch of Owens Creek]. Adams, Abstracts of Henry County, Virginia, Deed Books I and II 1776-1784, pp. 101, 103. Another interesting aside is that the first tract was purchased from Bottom Estes by Robert Hodges, son of Isham Hodges. The problem with this solution, if it stands up, is that it cuts off the supposed connection of these Hodges (at least directly) to the Cumberland County, North Carolina, Hodges that we thought most probable. Who were the Cumberland County, N.C. family?
When I first came to this board I put up a series of posts that I called (just a little facetiously) the "Unified Family Theory". My idea was that most of the Hodges in the Southeast and lower Midwest came from one family group. Some of those connections I could show, and some I surmised based on evidence. Now I am going to go several steps further and provide a hypothesis connecting other branches. Remember, these are ideas, not conclusions, but they potentially break down a few brick walls. What I want you all to do is (1) tell me what evidence shows that I am wrong, or (2) go out and find further evidence that I am right. This came to me when I saw the posts about the early Hodges in Madison County, Alabama (Sims Settlement). For some time, I have been trying to figure out how the Hodges of Lawrence County, Alabama, were connected to the Hodges of Cumberland County, North Carolina. This will take a while so I want you to bear with me. I will put this up in a series of numbered posts. Alabama William Hodges who died in Lawrence County, Alabama in 1843 is described as "a sturdy son of North Carolina" in the bio of his grandson Asa, who was 21 when William died. William served in the Revolution in South Carolina. He may have spent some time in Warren County, Georgia; Greenville County, South Carolina, and Smith County, Tennessee. He is supposed to have married a daughter of Francis Kerby, thought to be the same Francis Kerby (or one of them) from Franklin County, Virginia, and so researchers have tied him to the Franklin County family, but I have never been able to figure out how he ties into that family (which is my family). Douglas Fuller did a lot of the work on this family. He connected William to an older William and John Hodges who moved to Wilkes County, Georgia, by about 1793. I spent some time trying to trace these two back to Marlboro County, South Carolina, to Franklin County or Halifax County, Virginia, or to Cumberland County, North Carolina, without finding anything positive. For one thing, the names did not look right. The Georgia William's named children were William, Elliott, John, Alexander, Francis, James, Mary, Elizabeth Moses L., Josiah, Nancy and Cynthia. A few days ago, I ran across this website: http://www.flash.net/~cavis/newhtml/hodge_family.html This makes plain that the William and John that Douglas Fuller thought were connected to William Hodges of Lawrence County, Alabama, are from a different family. We can identify them from their Revolutionary War service in South Carolina. Here is information on this William Hodge from Moss' South Carolina Patriots in the American Revolution: William Hodge W4233 [pension application number] b. Apr. 1, 1762, York Co., Pa. d. Dec. 19, 1836 m. Ann Lay (or Say) While residing in the Ninety-Six District on the Pacolet River he enlisted in 1778 under Capt. John Hayes. In 1780 he was under Capt. John Thompson and Col. Farr. After the battle at Blackstock's Plantation, he was taken prisoner and forced to watch his house burned. He and several others escaped from Camden jail. During 1781 he joined General Morgan and was in the battle of Cowpens where he was wounded in the shoulder. Later in 1781 he was under Capt. Jacob Barnett, Lt. Col. Henry Hampton, and General Sumter and was in the battles of Thompson's fort and Orangeburg. In 1782 he was appointed as one of Gen. Huger's lifeguards and was wounded a second time. At some time, he served under Maj. Otterson and Col. Brandon. Moved to Ga. The material on the website suggests that this family was Welsh in origin. They came from Big Spring, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, to Maryland, then to North Carolina, and to the York District of South Carolina before moving on to Georgia. From there they went to Christian County, Kentucky, and then to Arkansas and finally to Texas among Stephen F. Austin's Old 300. Incidentally, Margaret Hodge of this family married Alexander Chesney, who was a Tory in the Revolution. After returning to Ireland after the war, Chesney wrote a fascinating narrative about his family and service in the conflict. It makes fascinating reading for anyone from this line. http://sctories.tripod.com/alexander_chesney.htm Now before we write this group off as a dead end, remember that John Allen Hodges of Claiborne and Tazewell Counties in Tennessee, who married Sarah McCubbin, is supposed to have come from "Big Spring" in North Carolina or possibly in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, and was the son of Henry Hodges. The "Big Spring" origin may point to this Pennsylvania line as that of John Allen Hodges. Another possible source of the "Big Spring" is the location of the same name near Elliston, Virginia, in Montgomery County. http://sctories.tripod.com/joseph_robinson.htm I am not necessarily prepared to conclude that this family is not related to the other Hodges families. For example, Ken connects his Francis Hodge from Pennsylvania to Ambrose Hodges who appears to have come to Tennessee from Halifax County, Virginia. But for our particular quest today, this is a dead end.
I think The Google is good also. I will keep trying to find my kin. Hope you have good luck in your research. Happy Holidays. I, too, am interested in a Thomas Hodges. I would like to find out what happened to the Thomas J. Hodges who was born in Wayne County, Illinois in 1863. He was my grandfather's brother. I have not been able to find out anything about any of my grandfather's siblings--George born 1851 Sumner County, TN Rebecca E born 1853 IL William J born 1855 IL Adaline born 1859 Sumner County, TN Thomas J born 1863 IL I thought he would be most likely to keep in touch with Thomas who was only two years older than he was. I would bet some of this family moved to Arkansas and were there in 1890 when my grandfather, Daniel Franklin Hodges, was teaching school in Jonesboro, Arkansas, but I have no proof. Are any of these names or dates familiar to anyone on this list? I have a John Rosemond Hodges born about 1780 in Abbeville Dist, SC and Died in Ripley County, IN Married a Mrs. Melroy about 1804. His parents was my ancestors Richard Hodges and Sarah Rosemond. There was a John Hodges who had land next to Richard's mother's property close to Walnut Creek, the Abbeville Dist, SC, which is the area just north west of Hodges, SC. I think this John might have been mistaken for Richard's father for many years and added to one or two books as his father. Other proof shows that Richard's father was Richard, but I believe that the John who owned land close to the land Elizabeth owned might have been Richard's uncle, his father's brother. It could also have been Richard's younger brother, but the time frame leads me to believe that the John who owned that land was older. John Rosemond Hodges married #2 Polly Ann Leeds. John Rosemond Hodges Jr. was born 16 Feb 1828 in Ripley Co, IN. the sixth child of John Rosemond Hodges and Mrs. Melroy. Jr. died in Indiana 6 Nov 1888. John Rosemond Hodges' brother Samuel married Elizabeth Razor their first child was John R. Hodges born in Boone Co, KY in 1814. Samuel and Elizabeth went on to Indiana. So, though John R. Hodges was born in KY he married 1 May, and 2 Syphena and one, or the other had their first child; James Hodges 1840 in Indiana. They moved to Missouri about the same time as my ancestor who was escaping slave catchers. He, my ancestor, was running an underground railroad. I don't know, but believe that other members of the family were also involved in this illegal activity. The rest of John R. Hodges children were born in Missouri and included a John born 1849. John R. Hodges born in KY had a younger brother named Hiram Hodges married Rhoda Ann Leeds in Ripley Co, IN they had all of their children in Missouri. One of the children was John R. Hodges born 1846. Another of my distant cousins; James Hamilton Hodges was born 11 Mar 1828 in IN, married Martha Jane Wilson in Ripley Co, IN both are buried in Cedar Grove Cemetary, MO. They had John Samuel Hodges born in Ripley Co, IN but moved to Missouri with his family as a child. Born 31 Mar 1851 died 20 Jan 1923 in MO. Married Martha Elizabeth Leach 23 Dec 1875. If any of these sound familiar let me know. I do have some family lists for these John Hodges' Elijah Vern Hodges, son of Early Gilbert Hodges 3 yrs Navy, son of Elias Francis Hodges, Robert Walker Hodges Civil War Vet, Gabriel Hodges, William Hodges, Richard Hodges Revolutionary War Vet, and Richard Hodges of Abbeville Dist, SC. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Wayne A. HODGES, Abel marr. HARRALL, Charlotte 08/01/1811 HODGES, Elias Jr. marr. GILLIAM, Sarah 07/18/1811 HODGES, George C. marr. HAYLEY, Sarah C. 08/18/1823 HODGES, Richard marr. JORDAN, Elizabeth 07/05/1823 Jerry, you missed one: FLEMING, Laird married HODGES, Jemima 7 Nov 1814 Jefferson Co., GA Jemima Hodges, Elias Hodges, Jr., George C. Hodges and Richard Hodges of the above marriage records are siblings. All Children of William Elias HODGES b. 1760-1770 (called ELIAS) and his wife Miss DuBose (d. 1835) believed to be Elizabeth sister of James DuBose who first married Elizabeth Hodges and was resident in Baldwin County, GA in 1820 thru 1824. James DuBose and family are absent from that place in 1830. James DuBose b. 1760-1770 and family, with second wife Dorcas (nee unknown) are enumerated in Conecuh County, AL as near neighbor of our Elias Hodges and his grandson Richard H. Hodges b. 1825, son of James DuBose HODGES and his unknown wife. James DuBose married Dorcas between 1825-1826 as their eldest daughter was born in 1827 and another daughter in 1829. James DuBose died in Conecuh County, AL sometime between 1830 and 1839 as Dorcas remarried in February, 1829. This information comes from family letters. ========================== Abel Hodges is son of William Hodges, son of Henry Hodges, Sr. (the elder). William Hodges is the brother of Henry Hodges, Jr. of Washington County, GA b. 1760-1770. Am currently trying to prove our William Elias Hodges (known as Elias Hodges) of Jefferson County, GA removed to Conecuh County, AL is the said William Hodges, son of Henry Hodges, Sr. (the elder) and brother of Henry Hodges, Jr. of Washington County, GA. Abel Hodges had a brother Seth and both lived in Washington County, GA as did Henry Hodges, Jr. and his sons Jordan Hodges, Redding Othaniel Augustus Hodges, Wiley T. Hodges and John Hodges. Henry Hodges, Jr. lived next door to Thomas Neely and not too far from his son Jordan. If memory serves, Louise Wyche Hodges, daughter of George C. Hodges, m. Sarah Haley, 18 August, 1823 in Jefferson County, GA, married Andrew Green Neely II b. Georgia. I suspect there is a connection between Andrew Green Neeley and the said Thomas Neely. George C. Hodges was married three times and finally settled in Barbour County, AL along with several DuBose families . Census Enumerations for George C. Hodges: 1820: Washington County, GA 1830: Jackson County, FL 1840: Barbour County, AL 1850: Barbour County, AL 1860: Barbour County, AL (don't recall when he disappears) In 1820 Washington County, GA: George C. Hodges lived next door to Holiday Haley, his future father-in-law and was near neighbors of John Hodge(s) b 1774-1794 and Reuben DuBose who later removed to Texas. Seth Hodges b. 1789-1790, brother of Abel Hodges, son of William Hodges, lived three doors from Noah Kittrell. There is I suspect, a connection between Noah Kittrell and Winifred Kittrell who married Philemon Hodges. Philemon Hodges was a RWS received pension payments in Muskogee County, GA where he lived with his son Samuel Kittrell Hodges who died there in 1840. Philemon Hodges is also recorded in the 1818-1819 Conecuh County, AL Tax Rolls with our Elias Hodges, Sr. Philemon Hodges was resident in Greene Co., AL in 1830, with his son Philemon and his wife Eliza Ann Caroline Brewer. Philemon Hodges, Jr. married 15 Feb 1828 Marengo Co., AL, Eliza Ann Caroline Brewer. Philemon Hodges, Jr. and family are enumerated in Sumpter Co., AL in 1840. Philemon Hodges, the elder, is enumerated in Muscogee Co., GA in a SPECIAL 1840 RWS Pensioner's Census at Page 146. ================ Elias Hodges, Sr. of Jefferson County, GA, with his family and son Elias Hodges, Jr. removed from Jefferson County, GA to Conecuh County, AL where they are recorded in the 1819 Conecuh County, AL Tax Rolls. Elias Hodges, Jr. returned to Jefferson County, GA where he died and his LWT was recorded in 1821. He named as Executors with his wife, the former Sarah Gilliam, two of his brothers, Richard Hodges and George C. Hodges. Richard Hodges m. Elizabeth Jordan, died in 1824. His LWT is also of record in Jefferson County, GA and he named his brother George C. Hodges as Executor. Richard and Elizabeth Jordan had one daughter. 1820 Jefferson County, GA Census records the families of both Elias Hodges, Jr. and Richard Hodges. Brother George C. Hodges, as shown above, was recorded in Washington County, GA. Would appreciate communicating with anyone who is working these lines OR descendant there from. Kaye Collier Alabama
Hi Winn, Orange County, formed in 1734, was split into Augusta in 1745 and into Culpeper in 1749. Culpeper was split into Madison and Rappahannock in 1793 and 1833. The town of Madison is now in Madison County but depending on the year, the records could be in any of the parent counties. If William V. was born in Orange in 1805 he was not born in the town of Madison, since the county of Madison was already in existence and would have been listed. It seems to be a good assumption that Calvin Brock Hodge was of this Francis' line since the name Calvin was used mainly by Scot-Irish Presbyterians (Calvinism) and Brock from his Mother. Most of the settlers in that area of Va. were Scot-Irish. I wonder if this next record is a later marriage of William or maybe his son? It seems too late for him to marry at age 65 but I've seen older ones do it.
