Dear List, Is there anyone on the list that is researching the Arledge surname? Thanks for any help that you can give. Linda Hodge
The best way to avoid this is to post your reply to the person who sent it, rather than the list. But people are not doing this for some reason. According to Governor Winthrops Journals in what is Mass. the first Hodges in America was probably William Hodges ,a sea Captain about 1633,and his wife was Esther Gallop`s her father ,John Gallop, was a sea Captain to.They came from England and settled in Taunton Mass. As sea Captains they probably sailed the East coast as will as to England etc.The Biography of New England families V9 pages 100-101 confirms the above to. Their children were John Hodges born 1650, Henry Hodges born 1652 ,and Ann Frances Hodges .It is quite possible that John Hodges 1650-1719 ,and his wife Elizabeth Macey Hodges ,who may have had 7 sons had some that ended up in New York to the Carolinas. It is my understanding that the 7 sons names were Samuel,WILLIAM ,George ,Ebanezar, Nathaniel ,John,& Nathan. This is from others on this line as my line is Henry Hodges. I am luck to have old books on the Hodges Genealogy written in the late 1800 time frame.Several descendants have graduated from west poi! nt . One was a teacher there ,and one descendant General Douglas McArther was the head of West Point. In going back further on the familys in the 1700 time frame it should not be overlooked that they somtimes may have come from New England after migrating from England to New England.

Hello Bob, You said there were no Richard's! Then you show a deed between John and Richard Hodges, John being the grandson. I have agreed with your premise that most, or all of the Southern Hodges are probably out of the same family for many years. I think that my Richard was an older son of one of the early Hodges and not mentioned in the will because he had distanced himself from the family. I believe that the Richard you mention above is probably his cousin, but can't find any support. My Richard was in Virginia in the 1740's and 1750's and moved to South Carolina where he died not several years later at the hands of Indians who did not want him and his family on their land. If you read the Will of Elizabeth Hodges, who signed it with an X, and who gives land to a few of her children it doesn't even mention Richard, her eldest in her will. He was in Indiana and she probably hadn't heard much from him. If she had then she knew that he was established in Indiana and didn't need anything in her will. I'll try to support my premis with what I can. First Richard had a son Richard, he also had James L. Hodges, John Hodges, Sarah Hodges, Charles Hodges, William Brooks Hodges, and Samual Hodges. James and John are so common as names that I'd have to drop these from my list of why I believe my Richard was part of one of those three families. I believe that the "Brooks" name is a maiden name for one of Richard's ancestors. The reason I believe this is that his wife's maiden name was Elizabeth Jones. These lists are the grandchildren of Richard. Richard Hodges married Sarah F. Rosemond James L. Hodges married Nancy Ware they had; John Rosemond Hodges 1780 Thompson Hodges 10 Nov 86 Elizabeth Hodges pos1784 Elizabeth Hodges 25 Mar 88 Samuel Hodges 25 Oct 88 Mary Hodges 5 May 90 Richard Hodges 1791 John Hodges 24 Mar 92 Jane Hodges 1795 James Hodges 27 Jul 94 Sarah H. Hodges 1790 Nicholaus Ware Hodges 1 Jan 97 Margaret Hodges 1790 Reuben Hodges 23 Jul 99 William Hodges 1800 Mahala Hodges 25 Apr 1801 Reuben Bert Hodges 8 Jun 1804 Martha Hodges 2 Apr 03 Mary Hodges 1810 Nathaniel Ware Hodges 20 Feb 06 Ezekial Hodges 28 May 08 John Hodges married 1786 1st Margaret Long, 1790 2nd Frances Anderson they had; Lucy Hodges 24 Dec 87 Reuben Hodges 1 Feb 90, (Margaret Long probably died in childbirth with Reuben). Matilda Hodges 12 Jul 91 George Washington Hodges 9 Sep 92 Gabriel Hodges 6 Jan 94 Drucilla Hodges 10 Sep 95 Elizabeth Hodges 19 Feb 97 Sarah Hodges 18 Nov 98 Margaret Long Hodges 10 Jan 1800 John Anderson Hodges 18 Jul 01 Samuel Anderson Hodges 1 Oct 02 Armstrong Jones Hodges 4 Feb 04 Frances Hodges 7 Mar 05 James Hodges 1 May 06 Mary Hodges 30 Sep 07 Benjamin Hodges 17 Jan 08 Mahulda Hodges 6 Apr 10 Absalom Turner Hodges 10 Jan 12 Robert Henry Wardlaw Hodges 11 Apr 13 Lucy Wardlaw Hodges 1815 >From John's family I see that he honored his first, and deceased, wife. Then Frances had honors with John and Samuel, then John's mother Elizabeth Jones was honored by Armstrong Jones Hodges. The George Washington Hodges name was popular at the time for obvious reasons and family tradition had it that John named his last two children after a friend, Henry Wardlaw. So I believe that Richard's mother may have been a Brooks, his wife was a Jones and was honored by her son, but not the first son. John stayed in SC and was in Elizabeth's will. Richard went to Indiana and wasn't mentioned. So Richard the first could easily have been overlooked if he left home as a young man and found Elizabeth Jones willing to marry him. He eventually moved to SC as did other Hodges families. This is a quote from an email Al Metts posted several years ago; As a youth James Hodges lived near Mulberry Creek. He served several different enlistments in the Revolutionary War and in 1786 married Nancy Ware. His will dated 27 Feb 1826 names his wife Nancy, and these children: Betsy, Martha Weatherall, Polly, Nicholas, Ezekial, Thompson, Reuben, James and Elizabeth Jones. Charter members of Walnut Grove Baptist Church in 1826 included James, Nancy and Thompson Hodges, and others of the family were among the early church members. In 1830 church letters were granted to James Hodges and his wife Polly, "being about to remove to Alabama State." He was probably a son of James and Nancy Ware Hodges. The will of John Weatherall, probated in 1824, had named one of his children as Polly, wife of James Hodges Jr. Walnut Grove Church granted letters in 1833 to Nancy Hodges, Sr., (sic), Polly Hodges and Ezediel Hodges who were leaving for Mississippi. This shows how members of the family migrated West through the South. It could easily have been due to the influence of other family members who had moved, or it may have been the Baptist Church trying to establish itself throughout the country. Richard went to Indiana and held Baptist Meetings in his home until many years later when a church was established in Ripley County Indiana. I still think that Richard was related to other Hodges who moved to South Carolina. Elijah

Marlboro County I am not going to try to untangle the problems with the Marlboro County Hodges. It is enough for my purposes here to state that there are two distinct Hodges families in Marlboro County. One originates in Virginia and Cumberland County, North Carolina as shown above. The other came from Beaufort County, North Carolina, originally from Isle of Wight County, Virginia. One key to sorting them out is the 1752 will of Richard Hodges of Beaufort Co., N.C., leaving land in South Carolina to his son John. The following deed identifies John and wife Anna as heirs of this land. The following records are from My Southern Family. The State of South Carolina This indenture made this twenty sixth of September, in the year of Our Lord, one thousand seven hundred and ninety one and in the fifteenth year of the Independence of the United States of America, between John Hodges and Anna his wife, Darlington County and the State of South Carolina of the one part and Moses Pearson of Marlborough County and State aforesaid of the other part. Witnessed that the said John Hodges and Anne his wife for and in consideration of the sum of Two Hundred Twenty pounds sterling money to us, in hand paid by the said Moses Pearson, before the ensealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof we the said John Hodges and Anne his wife doth confess and acknowledge, hath granted, bargained, sold, released and confirmed of the said John Hodges and Anne his wife for themselves their Heirs, Executors, Administrators, and Assignees doth by these present grant, bargain, sell, release and confirm unto Moses Pearson and to his Heirs and Assigns forever a certain tract or parcel of land containing one hundred seventy five acres being half of a tract of three hundred and fifty acres granted to John Newberry by his excellency James Glenn Esq. Formerly Governor of South Carolina by deed of grant bearing date of the thirteenth day of April 1748 and being conveyed by the said John Newberry to Richard Hodge by deed of conveyance bearing date of the fifth day of September 1750 and conveyed by John Hodges to Moses Pearson. The above mentioned land being situated in Marlborough County near ye Three Creeks on the road about half a mile below ye said Three Creeks being the S.E. part of a tract of three hundred fifty acres granted to afore said John Newberry and be divided agreeable to a plat under these presents and agreeable to the ____ of the original grant and a Platt under Newberry conveyance to Richard Hodges and hath such shape form and marks as appears by the Platt to the original grant annexed to have and to hold the aforesaid plantation or tract of land containing one hundred seventy five acres more or less being one half the original grant containing together with all singular the Rights, Titles , Privileges, Improvements and Appertives whatsoever there unto belong or in any wise appertaining unto said Moses Pearson and unto his heirs and assigns forever and the said John Hodges for himself his heirs, Executors, Administrators doth goverant promise and agree to and with the said Moses Pearson that the right and title of the aforesaid mentioned land and privilege I do forever warrant and defend unto the said Moses Pearson from any person whatsoever claiming or to claim through from or under him the said John Hodges or any person or persons what so ever by their own right. In witness where of____ we the said John Hodge and Anne his wife have___ unto set our hands and seal this day and year first above written. Sealed Signed and Delivered John Hodge Anna Hodge In the presence of us Jacob Buchholls George Hodge Elizabeth Evans Received this twenty sixth day of September, one thousand seven hundred and ninety one of Moses Pearson, the sum of two hundred pounds sterling being the full consideration money We say Received John Hodges Anna Hodges Jacob Bucholls George Hodges Elizabeth Hodges Deed Book AA, Page 186-188 recorded in Marlboro County S.C. John of John and Anna was actually Richard's grandson. A deed in Marlboro Co. SC Book FF p. 242 mentions the will of John Hodges dated May 2, 1775. John Hodges, Sr buys from Edward Lovill his land grant of Nov 27 1746 on Sept 16, 1764 A 194; John Hodges, Sr wills his Lovill Grant to Samuel Hodges Jan 22, 1778 AP 194; John Hodges Jr sells his Lovill Grant to Thomas Evans as heir at law of Samuel Hodges dec'd. Sept 2 1797 Ap 194. John Hodges applied for admin of all and singular the goods and chattels rights and credits of Rebecka Hodges; Citation: dated March 11, 1791. The admin bond dated May 17, 1791 shows John Hodges, Thomas Evans & Abel Waddell are jointly holden in the sum of 300 lbs Sterling money (all signed no Xs). (Abel Waddell is m. to Rachel Standard sister of my John's father-in-law Wm Standard-proven). (Thomas Evans 1743-1800 is m. to Elizabeth Hodges 1745-1798 assumed sister of my John above - his father John, Sr only John in the area when she was born (question is this the Col Tom, Jr. Thomas Evans or another Thomas Evans? -they named children: Abel Edward (he had a bro Abel), John A., Rebecca Ann, Thomas, Josiah James-Tom had a bro Enoch James Evans so the James must figure in here somewhere, Thomas, and Eliza ) In addition to the above Jacob Buckholtz 1755-1826 (wit to the deed) m. Sarah Hodges another presumed sister of my John and they all migrated to Wilkinson Co. MS after 1800 and by 1815 where they died. - Abel WADDELL d. 1798 (wife & children migrated to MS), Jacob BUCKHOLTZ family, and my John HODGES family and Noel NORWOOD (m. to John & Ann's dau Betsy) as my John's presumed sister Martha Hodges d. bef 1785 m. Samuel Norwood, Sr. 1st and then Samuel m. Martha Waddell 2nd (dau of Abel & Rachel Standard) their family. My Southern Family cites Jessie Latta Hodges' work and the Diaries of Rev. Evan Pugh to show that the children of John Senior and Rebecca were Richard, John Junior, Robert, Henry, Lemuel (sometimes mistakenly called Samuel), Rebecca, and Elizabeth. This suggests that the "other" John was the father of John (b. 1747 N.C.) and Edmund (b. 1752 N.C.). This would suggest that John was living in North Carolina at those times, probably with William. Interestingly, all of the following Hodges served in the 3rd South Carolina Continentals: Benjamin Hodges 7-24-1776 Benajmin Hodges 9-20-1776 (possibly the same, but I think not. One b. Va. 1750, other 1756 in S.C.) Edmund Hodges 7-1-1775 (or 7-24-1776) (John's brother) Isai Hodges 9-20-1776 (probably error for Isham) Isham Hodges 7-8-1775 (b. Virginia about 1750) (prob. his brother) James Hodges 9-20-1776 (poss. same one later in Madison Co. Ala.) John Hodges 7-1-1775 (brother of Edmund) Philomel Hodges 7-24-1776 of Cumberland Co. NC (cousin of John and Edmund) Joab Hodges 7-18-1777, discharged 3-1-1779 (est.admin by Isham) Jacob Hodges (prob. same as Joab). Mark Hodges 7-18-1777 (est. admin by Isham) Joseph Hodges 7-24-1776 (joint pay voucher with Isham) William Hodges 7-24-1776 (bro. of Philemon) Also George and Robert Draughan of Cumberland Co. NC enlisted July 24, 1776 (enl. from Cumberland Co., N.C., with William and Philemon). Turtle McCloud 10-29-76 discharged 10-1-79 (est admin by Isham) May 7, 1793 Isham Adm Isham Hodges entered into bond w/ William Fields, security, for admin. Of the estate of Turtle McCloud, Joab Hodges, Mark Hodges, Edmond Hodges, and Charles Stewart decd Isham appears to have qualified as administrator to collect pay due these men from the Revolution. Moss's book says that Turtle McCloud enlisted in the 3rd Regiment as a drummer Oct. 29, 1776 and was discharged Oct. 1, 1779. He also served in the militia in 1782. Charles Stewart (like Isham) served as a dragoon under Col Maham in 1781 and 1782. I think it is possible that they were Isham's brothers-in-law. Normally one cannot qualify as administrator without some kind of interest (although it may be as a creditor). It is tempting to ascribe all of these Hodges men as sons of John, but there is really nothing to justify this. Philemon testifies that John and Edmund were brothers, but he does not mention Isham, even though they served in the same company. There are also two other men about the same age who are not listed among the children of the other John, and those are William (of Marlboro County) and Welcome. I think there is at least one other "father" to this group of at least Hodges men (Benjamin, Isham, James, Joab, Mark, Joseph, William and Welcome). One possibility is Bartholomew. Another is Robert Hodges of Franklin Co., Va. (d. 1832), who received supplies from the General Court of Henry County, Virginia, in 1779 because his sons were in the Continental service. In a Henry County court record of June 24, 1779, "Robert Woods is appointed to furnish Robert Hodges with such necessities as he needs to support him and his wife." Blunt, Complete Index and Abstract of the Henry County Order Books 1 & 2, 67. On October 28, 1779, it was "Ordered that Robert Holliday be allowed the sum of 13 pounds for necessities for Robert Hodges, whose sons are in the Continental service of the United States." Blunt, 80. I do not see any records of Hodges men in the Virginia Continentals that fits the records (Abednego Hodges served, but he enlisted after the time of these records). To tie this all up, I want to cite one last record from Jim Sims' history of William Hodges of Alabama, to give a further insight on the geographical and family connections I have illustrated: South Carolina Marlboro Co. 1798- Shadrack Fuller dies, husband of Lucy Parish and father of Jonathan Fuller (1782-1835) who married Jane Hodges a dau. of Wm. Hodges (1754-1842). Shadrack Fuller was born about 1750 in Granville Co., NC. His sister Sarah Fuller married Joseph McDaniel of Cumberland County. Greenville Co. 1831- Jane Hodges Fuller, g-daughter of William (1754-1843) m. Jonathan Fuller 1804 in Warren Co. Ga., moves from Greenville Co. SC to Morgan Co., Alabama next to Wm. Hodges and wife Elizabeth McGlathery Sims Hodges. This record is like a roster of most of the places I have covered in this analysis, suggesting that the Hodges are not the only family that followed this path. The same is true of the Kerby family. I noted the frequent occurrence of the names McDaniel and Hawkins in several of the same areas. I think that this analysis points the way to linking together the Hodges family of central Virginia with those of Greenville Co., S.C. and Lawrence, Morgan and Madison Counties in Alabama, and with the Hodges of Cumberland Co., N.C. and Marlboro and Darlington Counties in S.C. Much more work remains to be done, so I ask that you tell me what holes you see in my analysis and what additional evidence you have to support or refute it. I am very interested in receiving your comments and trying to get a little livleier exchange on the message board. Thanks. Bob Hodges
Let's look at the land records a different way: The following four records relate to one tract: May 21, 1761 deed of Richard Murphy to Thomas Hodges, both of Halifax Co., for L25, 100 ac. on both sides of Bradley Crk. part of a patent of 400 ac. granted by patent first to Welcome William Hodges Aug. 16, 1756. Feb. 18, 1762 Deed from Thomas Hodges to William Sims for L30, 200 ac. on both sides of Bradleys Cr., part of a larger patent first granted to [Welcome] Wm. Hodges Aug. 16, 1756, beg. Cor. of Thos. Deed Book 4, page 436. Then, the following two relate to another tract: July 21, 1763 Joseph Shaw of Halifax Co. to Thomas Hodges & William Hodges for L20. 200 ac. part of 400 ac. where sd Shaw now lives, Beg. at Fountain's line, crossing Beaver Pond Branch,, and Cths. Road, Shaw's old line. Rec. Jul. 21, 1763. Wit. Thomas Green. Halifax Co. (Va.) Deed Book 4, page 333. Jun. 21, 1770 deed from Thomas Hodges, Susanna his wife, William Hodges, Joseph Shaw and Anne Shaw his wife, all of Antrim Parish, Halifax Co., to Jeremiah Stevens, 200 acres, part of 400 acres whereon said Shaw formerly lived, on Fontaine's line, crossing Beaver Pond Branch, and Courthouse Road, grantors have good, sure and perfect indefeasible estate of inheritance in fee simple. Halifax Co. (Va.) Deed Book 8, page 1. Dec. 1, 1740 Patent to John Smith for 400 ac Amelia Co., both sides of Flat Creek, bounded by Bently alias Hodges, Sizemore, Eckholes, etc. Va. Land Patent Book 19, page 874. 1750 Amelia County Surveys, number 21: "John Bently now Thoms. Hodges survey on the upper side of Flatt Creek joyning Jones, Cobbs and Sizemore's lines." Feb. 27, 1752 deed of John Smith to Robert Smith of Gloucester Co., Va. 200 ac. on N. side of Flat Creek, adj. lines of Hodges alias Russel, Sizemore & Eckholes. McConnaughey, Amelia Co., Va., Deeds 1747-1753. June 1765 Samuel Bentley v. Thomas Hodges, debt, suit dismiss'd. Halifax Co. (Va.) Plea Book 5, page 87. These records suggest to me that Thomas Hodges moved onto land on Flat Creek in Amelia County originally belonging to John Bently about 1740 and held the land until about 1750 or 1752. He was listed as a tithable in Lunenburg County in 1749. The land had apparently passed to Russell by 1752. The later Bentley suit may relate to non-payment of money to purchase the land. Next, this group of records: Dec. 10, 1764 Survd. for William Hodges 374 acres of land on the Draughts of Frying Pan Cr. .. Dalton's line . Thos. New line. Pittsylvania Co. Old Survey Book 1, page 141. 1765 Timothy Dalton et al. v. Thomas Hodges et al. suit dismiss'd. Halifax Co. (Va.) Plea Book 5, page 113. [Would be nice to know who et al. was!] Nov. 2, 1774 John Hodges v. Robert Walton, son and heir of Robert Walton decd. for 390 ac. Halifax Co. entered this date. Abated by plaintiff's death. Nov. 2, 1774 John Hodges v. Robert Walton for 400 ac. Halifax Co. entered this date. Abated by plaintiff's death. October General Court 1782 Caveats Dismissed, Abated or Determined. "Caveated Surveys Settled in the General Court 1782-88", Magazine of Virginia Genealogy, Feb. 1990. To understand these you need to know that William Hodges' 1764 survey on the draughts of Frying Pan Creek adjoined land of Robert Walton. That land adjoined land of Timothy Dalton. For some reason, the William Hodges survey 's calls along Walton's line are described as "Dalton's line." There were two prior entires in this area by Tucker Woodson, and Timothy Dalton and Tucker Woodson had some dealings. This is just a wild guess, but it may have been that William first acquired the land from Woodson or Dalton, and had some arrangement that involved Thomas that resulted in the suit. He then transferred it to John, who entered the caveat against Walton, because he claimed under the earlier Woodson entry. This might mean that the John we find in Pittsylvania up to 1774 is the same as the one who appears in Marlboro County in 1775. I am less clear on the Williams. Possibly the 1764 and 1767 records relate to William, but I think the later William Sr. and Jr. are other men (the latter probably the son of Isham Hodges). Identity of these men in Pittsylvania with the ones in Halifax is not critical to my theory. Then let's look at what all the records tell us about each individual: Thomas Hodges 1734 Amelia Co., Va. The Pittsylvania and Henry County, Virginia, Records Although they may have no meaningin this context, I think it is worthwhile to review the records of Pittsylvania and Henry County relating to William and John Hodges (there is no Thomas). Until 1767, Pittsylvania was part of Halifax County. In 1776, Henry County was split off from Pittsylvania, and in 1785, Franklin County was formed from part of Henry. The Chestnut Creek area of Franklin County, home to large number of Hodges, was in Halifax until 1767, in Pittsylvania until 1776, and in Henry until 1785. About 1774, Edmund Hodges and his sons from Goochland County settled in the Bearskin Creek area of Pittsylvania County just west of Chatham. Here are the records of the Williams and Johns of these areas up through the 1770's. Mar 18, 1762 /Tranf.d to Jno.
