    1. [HODGES-L] Unified Family Theory 2003: The William Problem
    2. Bob Hodges
    3. The William Problem One last post on my new Unified Family Theory, as last branch to try to attach to the family tree. In the 1767 Pittsylvania County, Virginia, tithe listing there are three William Hodges: Jefferson's list: Isham Hodges 150 acres John Hodges Robert Hodges Donelson's list Edmond Hodges Wilson's list Wm. W. Hodges 240 acres Dilliard's list Edmond Hodges 100 acres Innes' list Wm. Hodges & Thomas Neville William Hodges I doubt if any was William Hodges, son of Isham Hodges, because none is listed with Isham and Isham's William would probably not be old enough. William W. with 240 acres is probably Welcome William who moved to Surry County. Another is probably the William who later appears as William Hodges, Sr. Who is the third? It could be William Hodges of Cumberland County. Let's look at a few more: 1774 Pittsylvania Tithables, Innes' List Isam Hodges John Hodges Robt. Hodges Jr. Wm. Hodges Wm Hodges Jr. 1775 Pitsylvania Tithables, Witcher's List Edmond Hodges David Hodges Jesse Hodges Thomas Hodges Isam Hodges Wm. Hodges Donelson's List Wm. Hodges 1776 Pittsylvania Tithables, Innes' List Isam Hodges Robert Hodges, Jr. Wm. Hodges Wm. Hodges, Jr. August 1, 1778 Henry County tax list ...Haskins, William Hodges, Isham Hodges William Hill, Isham Huckaby, John Hodges, William September 21, 1778 deed of Josiah Hodges to Ambrose Hall for 200 acres on Pigg River. Witnesses: Tully Choice, Jr.; William Jamison; William (X) Hodges. 1 Henry County Deeds 245. An alphabetical List of the taxes or pound rate imposed on the different persons property in the County of Henry and delivered to John Salmon, Sherif of the said County to Collect for the year 1779. ...Hodges, William, Senr. Hall, Lamford Hodges, Josiah Hooker, Mary Hodges, William, Jr. Hodges, Isham June 17, 1779 deed of Ambros Hall and Elisha Eastes, Sr., of Henry County to Josiah Hodges of Henry County for "a negro wench named Polly". Witnesses: William (X) Hodge, James (X) Hodge, John (X) Milan. 1 Henry County Deeds 243. 1780: An alphabetical List of Tax in the County of Henry for raising a supply of money for the Service of the United States. Delivered to Archeleus Hughes, Esq. Sherif of the said County to collect, due the 20th day of February 1780. ...Isham Hodges William Hodges... Thus, there are consistently two Williams up until 1780. I think the younger, William Hodges, Jr., is Isham's son. Who is the other and where does he disappear to after 1780? I suppose it is possible that it is William Hodges of Alabama, but it just seems odd to me that he would be called William "Senior" and the other one William "junior" when they were so close in age. Paul Hodges relates that Luther N. Byrd of Westfield, N.C., prepared in 1947 an abstract of the 1784 tax list of Surry County, North Carolina. In Captain Martin Armstrong's District (which Byrd stated was probably in what is now Yadkin County) are listed: "Wm. Hodges, Amasa Hodges & Abner Hodges - 3 polls" This may relate to the occurrence of a similar group of names in Lincoln County, Kentucky, between 1796 and 1811. William and Amos Hodges first appear in land records in 1796, and Amasa in 1803. Sutherland, Early Kentucky Landholders, 1787-1811, 156-157. In personal property tax lists, William and Amos first appear in 1797, Amasa in 1803, and Abner Hodges in 1796. A James Hodges also appears in 1797. Early Kentucky Householders 1787-1811, 87. These Hodges individuals appear to have been living along the Green River in Lincoln and Casey Counties. Sutherland, Some Original Land Grant Land Surveys Along Green River in Lincoln and Casey Counties, Kentucky 1781-1836, 29, 197, 199, 493, 494. Among the individuals taxed in Lincoln County from 1807 to 1811 was a Moses Hodges. Sutherland, Early Kentucky Householders 1787-1811, 87. Here is a post from the archives on this family: Is anyone researching the HODGES family of Casey CO. Kentucky? On the 1815 Tax List are the following names; Moses HODGES, William HODGES 100 Acres, Amos HODGES 50 Acres, Amasa HODGES, Welcum HODGES 400 Acres, Abner HODGES. On the 1840 Casey CO. KY. Census, page 173, is listed Judith HODGE, age,70-80. Could this be Judith GENTRY, daughter of Joseph GENTRY, of Surry County, N.C. married to Amos HODGES? The reason that I started researching the HODGES of Casey CO. KY. is that they might be connected with the Ambrose, Joshua and William HODGES,of the Walnut Creek area of Warren and Barren County, KY. I am trying to connect this family with William HODGES, who was sent by Samuel GENTRY, in 1813, to claim his part of his father, Joseph GENTRY's estate. This William HODGES, was married to Joseph GENTRY'S daughter, Agnes. I have checked the HODGES Family Archives, and have found no one researching the HODGES of Casey CO. KY. There is also an Ambrose HODGES, on the Boyle CO.KY. census of 1850 I have HODGES info. I will share. Rich Johnson.. Does anyone know how (or if) this family ties into the Hodges family of Surry County, North Carolina? Could the William be William, Senior from Franklin County, Virginia. Bob Hodges

    3. Hello Cousin Elijah. Thanks tremendously for the info you sent. I'm going to have to digest some of this before I can answer intelligently. But, one thing struck me in your first email regarding Richard Hodges and his wife Sarah F. Rosamond. Sarah's father's name was John and not James. James was her brother, who is my ggg-grandfather. This has been pretty much proven by a number of cousins independently, as well as a local SC independent researcher not connected to the family. The makeup of this family, which ties to the Hodges at least twice and maybe three times, is shown below. John Roseman (spelling from records of Augusta County, VA) and wife Sarah Willson Roseman. They moved from Augusta County, VA to Abbeville District, SC around 1766. There is a record of them selling their land on Moffett Creek in VA in late 1765. I have a land deed where John obtained land in Abbeville Dist, SC in 1767 on Turkey Creek, just outside of Ware Shoals. This couple had five children: Margaret Rosamond who married Bartholomew Weems Sarah F. Rosamond who married Richard Hodges, the family that later moved to Ripley County, Indiana Jean Rosamond (female, who never married) Samuel Rosamond, who married Sarah Hodges, sister of Richard Hodges above James Rosamond, who married 1st. --- BIG QUESTION --- married 2nd Mary Doherty (as spelled in James' will dated 1806 - her previously married name) widow of James Daugherty. One of the leading contenders for being James' wife is Dorothy Hodges, the one who was captured by the Indians and later returned to live with her family. She is supposed to be the sister of Richard Hodges and Sarah Hodges listed above. The other most likely scenario is that she was a Jones, probably related to the Benjamin Jones family who lived on the next farm over from John and Sarah Rosemond. One of James' sons was named Nathaniel Jones Rosamond sort of hinting that maybe his mother's maiden name was Jones. Now my question. You show Sarah F. Rosemond's father died in November 1769. Can you tell me where this date came from? My cousins and I have been looking for a record of his death for years with no success. I have to question the date because both John and his son Samuel are shown in an early colonial census of the Old 96 District in 1779. We're pretty sure John is not alive in 1790 because Sarah is listed as the head of the household, with one unmarried female living with her. This would place his death between 1779 and 1790. Oh, the name is misspelled again on this early census. It's shown as Rosemand. BTW, for anyone interested in the Rosamond name by any of the various spellings, I encourage you to join the Rosamond-L list. Your information is correct on William born in Essex County Virginia about 1764, moved with family to 96th District, later the Abbeville Dist, SC. They lived close to Walnut Creek just north of where Hodges, SC now stands. The people of Hodges know very little about the family. I'll go into that in a different letter. William married Frances Long, also known as Franky, they married in the neighborhood of Hodges, SC. My records show Greenwood, but when they married it was still Abbeville Dist, SC I think. William died age 70 in SC. > > You asked about his family. His father was Richard Hodges and his mother Was Elizabeth Jones. They married in the Essex County, VA area and began their family there. It is unknown just how many children they had. I believe that two families were lumped together in some of the books there were written. I believe that Richard had a brother John who went to South Carolina and lived on the next farm over. John has been very hard to find in the records, the only reference is a land grant sent to me by Al Metts who used to post here often. You will find much information in the Archives from Al Metts. > Al writes that the first record of Richard Hodges is when he had an important meeting with a man named Richard Jones. Richard Jones had in his lifetime made a general promise that he would give fifty pounds to his daughter, Elizabeth, if she married with his liking. She married the said Richard Hodges, who was of her father's liking. On 1 January 1741 (Order Book 24:39) Well, the lawyer-talk is documented to tell that Father Jones did not come up with the 50 Pounds! Instead, he agreed to leave lovely Elizabeth an equal share of his estate when he died. Like every mortal, Richard Jones died between 1755(w) and 1757(p). A long will named many of our Jones cousins: - Richard Jones' sons John, Benjamin, Richard, Adam and a couple of grandsons - all boys! Conspicuous by her omission was Betty (Elizabeth) Hodges! > Betty and Richard took the estate and deceased Richard Jones to court. Justice was done at last. On 20 Jun 1763, after 7 years, the court found for Betty and gave her 50 pounds. They charged Richard 770 pounds of tobacco to pay expenses for three witnesses. There are other records about Richard in VA. There were records until 24 November 1768, after which Richard and his family vanish from the records in VA. > I'm sure that Richard Hodges is the father of Richard Hodges my ancestor. We have found, and believe to be true a short History that says that Richard was killed by indians before the RW. So I don't believe there would have been children after 1775, but like I said there was more than one family. I suspect that some, or several of the last children attributed to Richard and Elizabeth were the children of John Hodges. The problem is there is a terrible lack of records from the time period. > I have a pedigree chart for Elizabeth's family if you are interested. > > I also strongly suspect that William Brookes Hodges was named after an ancestress. 3. Here is a link to a site with the excerpt of Goodspeed's biographical book on Crittenden Count, Arkansas. It contains the bio of Asa Hodges of Lawrence County, Alabama, and also bios of John D. Hodges and James F. Hodges. I think the latter two were grandsons of John Hodges of Greenville County, South Carolina, son of William Hodges of Lawrence County, Alabama. http://www.couchgenweb.com/arkansas/crittenden/biog.htm Also, here is a link to a list of early Hodge marriages in Alabama. There are quite a few in the Madison-Morgan area, http://www.censusdiggins.com/alabama_marriages.ho.html Finally, I could not find a link to this, but here is the text from google of a record showing that some of the Lawrence County Hodges moved over into Itawamba County, Mississippi. The Crittenden bio above records another moving to Pontotoc County, Mississippi. Know all men by these presents that I James Hodges of Itawamba County of the State of Mississppi have this day appointed my brother Asa Hodges of the County of Lawrence of the State of Alabama, my lawful attorney for me and in my name to sell or dispose of the following named slaves as he may think proper: Cam, a man twenty two years old, Lellen, a girl seventeen years old, Sally sixteen years old, Amanda, ten or eleven years old, Henderson, a boy nine years old, all of dark complection .. And to make good and lawful titles to the same within named slaves as I myself could do ...In testimony of the above, I have set my hand and seal this the 22nd October 1842.. 3. In my first several posts on this subject I noted the move of some of the Hodges from Madison County, Alabama, to Union County, Illinois. It is not my purpose to trace this family, only to note that most of them appear to be decendants of James and Rebecca Hodges of Madison County, Ala. One who is not is Isaiah Hodges, who appears in the 1850 Census of Union County, Illinois. He is the son of Asa Hodges, son of Isham Hodges of Henry County, Virginia, and Chloe Marcum. Here is his information: Isaiah Hodges b. ca. 1800, Va. (per 1850 census), prob. Franklin County, Va. m. Martha Hodges, Sept. 6, 1823, Sumner Co., Tenn. Sumner Co., Tenn. Marriage Records. m. (2nd) Martha Hahn, ca. 1840, Union Co., Ill. Illinois Statewide Marriage Index. 1850 Census, Union Co., Ill., West part of Dist. #2, Aug. 1850 Isaiah Hodges wm50 farmer b. Va. Martha Hodges wf50 b. Va. Romulus Hahn wm15 farmer b. Ky. Martha Hodges wf10 b. Ky. John Thomas wm12 b. Ia. (Indiana?) It is interesting that one of the Franklin County, Virginia Hodges shows up among the South Carolina-Alabama Hodges in Union County, Illinois, and another (Asa M. Hodges) shows up among the Lawrence County, Alabama Hodges as well. Martha Hodges who married Isaiah in 1823 was the daughter of Aaron Hodges, son of Isham Hodges of Henry County, Virginia, and Elizabeth Markham, so it sounds like Isaiah and Martha may have been double first cousins. 3. Cousin Jimmy, I'm now writing about the third generation. First Gen being Richard Hodges and Elizabeth Jones. Second Gen for this writing is Charles Hodges 5th child of Richard and Elizabeth. (Some have him as 8th child) Charles Hodges born Essex Co, VA abt 1771, married Sarah Anderson abt 1795 died Abbeville Dist, SC Mar 1845. Children of Charles Hodges and Sarah Anderson are; William Hodges born abt 1795 at Mulberry Creek, Abbeville Dist, SC and married Elizabeth (Betsy) Baremore about 1829. They lived, had their family and died in the area of Hodges, SC. I think they are buried next to each other out behind the Go-Kart track. I'd have to look at my list again to be sure. I'm not sure where the list is. I have several piles of notes... Charles Hodges and Sarah Anderson had as many as twelve other children who's names we do not have. Sorry. William Hodges and Elizabeth Barmore, (Baremore) had at least three children: Sarah Jane Hodges born May 20 1830, married William Walker Higgins abt 1859 in or around Hodges, SC. William Charles Coleman Hodges born abt 1832 and Charles Hodges born abt 1843. Because of the three we do have I believe that there were others. Perhaps there were several unsuccessful pregnancies for what ever reason. My cousin has Elizabeth Baremore with parents William Baremore and Nancy Dodson. Because of her research I have changed my records to read Baremore. I'm sorry if I don't give you all of the deed registers, cencus report numbers etc. I haven't kept that information in my genealogy book, but created a seperate book with plenty of notes. My letters to the Hodges won't normally include proofs, I can tell you all however that I have that information for almost everything I put on the list. If I don't have it then my cousin does. I hope this helps someone! 3. The people of Hodges SC are not related, or don't know of a relationship to the original family. The town is named after General George Washington Hodges who was an active member of the SC state militia all of his adult life and fought in several battles. GW Hodges is buried in the grave yard that is part of the Go-Kart track outside of Hodges, SC. I've asked several people in SC to look into cleaning up the sight but the state won't have anything to do with it because it isn't public land. The list of we won't do anything goes on, but I won't. The people of the town are friendly and will tell you about GW Hodges who built the nicest house the town has ever seen. He or his descendants built the only bank the town has ever seen. The old building still stands, but a nicer building has been built and other descendants sold the bank to a larger concern. There is a bank in Hodges, SC, but they know nothing of the history in there. The people in the Delli/Gas station are friendly and know a little about the history. They pointed out a man at the back who was able to talk about the history of the town before the Civil War. He grew up there and knew the Hodges family who lived in the house. He was able to tell me where to find the cemetary. The trip over to Abbeville isn't to bad. The road is known as the "Hodges Road." When I was there everything was closed. Time was short, so I wasn't able to talk to anyone in Abbeville. They have a historic society where I had hoped to get more information about the history. Al Metts points out that there is a University nearby where most of the history of the area is easier to find. I've found this to be true here in Missouri too. A good place to start looking for the history of a place is at a University. I hope I've helped. E. Hodges. Sarah (Saliner?) Hodges has married, as she is shown by her married name of Rosamond, and she has two children living with the family, Mary A. Rosamond and Wm. H Rosamond. This has to be Sarah, daughter of Maryann, as Sarah Crowder age 19 is still listed in the census under that name as shown below. >From 1870 Choctaw County, MS census: 74 - 74 HODGES i. ROSAMOND, Mary A. 4 x. ROSAMOND, Wm. H. 3 xi. RICHIE(?), A. B. 14 Farmer (Who is this?) Of course, the obvious question is who and where is the husband of Sarah Hodges Rosamond. I believe he is Marion Francis "Frank" Rosamond, son of Benjamin Rosamond and Jane Rogers (Mays) Rosamond of Attala County, MS. It is known that this couple had a son, Joseph Franklin Rosamond, based on the death certificate of this Joseph Franklin Rosamond. This death certificate lists the mother of Joseph Franklin Rosamond as Sarah Jane Hodges, born in Choctaw County, Mississippi. Joseph Franklin Rosamond was born in 1876, making him age 4 at the time of the 1880 Choctaw County census. It is also known, that the father-in-law of Marion Francis "Frank" Rosamond died ca. 1884 based on an entry in the Diary of Judge Jason Niles on 6 October 1884. This entry reads, "Frank Rosamond, son of old Ben, was convicted at the last term of the Montgomery County Court of the murder of his father-in-law and was sentenced to the penitentiary for life." From family legend, the murder was precipitated by the death of Sarah Hodges Rosamond in childbirth, as a result of the actions of her father. This would put her death also ca. 1884. However, this does place Marion Francis "Frank" Rosamond in Montgomery County, MS in the early 1880s. Assuming that Frank and Sarah Jane Hodges Rosamond were in Montgomery County in 1880, a search was made for a census record for this family in 1880 and the following was found. >From 1880 Montgomery County, MS census, ED 141, Line numbers 16-21: Line 16 Roseman, F. M 32 17 Roseman, S. F 33 18 Roseman, A. F 14 19 Roseman, W. M 13 20 Roseman, E. F 11 21 Roseman, J. M 4 The F. and S. Roseman correspond to Frank (Marion Francis) and Sarah Hodges Roseman/Rosamond. The J. Roseman, age 4, is Joseph Franklin Rosamond born 1876. Concerning the other three children the son, W. Rosamond, age 13, corresponds to the Wm. Rosamond shown in the 1870 census living with his mother and grandparents. This writer believes that the two female children A. and E. Rosamond are Mary A. Rosamond, age 4 in 1870, and Mary M. E. Hodges, age 2/12 in 1870. The use of the A. and E. for their names could come from the fact that both were named Mary, so the family probably used their middle names to distinguish them. This still leaves the question of where was Frank (Marion Francis) Rosamond in 1870. It seems probable that he is the M. Rosamond, 23, b. MS that is listed in the 1870 census of Attala County, MS. This M. Rosamond is living alone and "Working on a farm." It is possible that he was separated from his family because of having to take a job in the adjoining county, and it was far enough away that he couldn't commute back and forth each day. It is also possible that he and Sarah Jane were estranged which would account for the fact that there is a nine year gap between the birth of their son William and their son Joseph. There was obviously some dissension between Frank Rosamond and his father-in-law which ultimately led to the murder about 1884. I would suspect that this could be because at the time Frank and Sarah's daughter, Mary A. Rosamond was conceived ca. 1866 Sarah Hodges Rosamond would have only been 17-18 years of age, and Marion Francis Rosamond was 16 or 17 years of age. However, it would appear that there was some justification for the murder as Marion Francis "Frank" Rosamond served only seven years of his sentence. By 1893 he had been released and was in Houston County, Texas with the rest of the Rosamond family there. In 1893 there is a record of him marrying the widow, Mrs. B. F. Smith in Houston County, Texas. This couple had at least three children. 1. [HODGES-L] Another William Hodges No. 2 - Register Reports Generations 1-3
    2. Jimmy Rosamond
    3. Here is the Register Report I mentioned directly out of my database in Family Tree Maker. I apologize for some of the repeated information from the previous email. I'd be interested to know anything else about this family, in particular the ancestry of William and Elizabeth Barmore Hodges. ------------------------------------------ Descendants of William Hodges of Abbeville, SC Generation No. 1 1. WILLIAM1 HODGES1 was born Abt. 1762 in Essex County, Virginia, and died Abt. 1845 in South Carolina. He married (1) ELIZABETH BARMORE 1783 in Ninety-Six District, South Carolina2. She died Abt. 1800 in South Carolina. He married (2) M. FRANCES LONG Abt. 1805 in South Carolina. Notes for WILLIAM HODGES: This William Hodges is listed as the father of a James L. Hodges, b. 5/12/1789, in a Family Group Sheet prepared by Rose-Marie Williams in 1992, and in "The Hodges Family" compiled and edited by Hazel Jan Hodges Parsons. (This appears to be a different James L. Hodges than the one who married Nancy Ware) The sources are based on independent research of the individual authors. In her book, Hazel Parsons gives the birth date of James L. Hodges as 1787, while the 1860 census lists him as being 59 years of age, thus born in 1791. This is borne out by the fact that the 1790 census of the Abbeville District of South Carolina shows only one William Hodges, and only one other person is in his household, presumably his wife. Therefore, this James L. Hodges could not have been born until after 1790. The names and birth dates of the other children of William and Elizabeth Hodges come from the Family Group sheet from Rose-Marie Williams, and the book "The Hodges Family" by Hazel Jan Hodges Parsons. Again, these two independent sources are in agreement. In her book, Hazel Parsons states, "From Virginia we have a record of William Hodges, who was born about 1767 and his wife, Elizabeth, moving to South Carolina..." Since Elizabeth is not identified by her maiden name, it appears that Ms. Parsons was not aware of the maiden name of William Hodges wife Elizabeth. I have located two separate records that indicate she was Elizabeth Barmore. The first is a marriage record from "Old 96 and Abbeville Districts, South Carolina, Marriages 1774 - 1890" complied by Paul R. Sarrett, Jr. and posted in the USGenWeb Archives for Abbeville County, SC. This record shows William Hodges married Elizabeth Barmore Hill in 1883. The second reference is the will of John Hill, Sr. and a paper filed in a court case some years after his death by his granddaughter Nancy Hill Richey. In the document, "Estate of John Hill Senior, Pack 3375, Bill for Account, Clerk of Courts Office, Abbeville, SC", it quotes the will of John Hill Senior and references one of his sons, Samuel Hill as follows: "Samuel Hill, now dead, who left as his only heirs and distributees a widow Elizabeth who has since intermarried with Wiliam Hodges, and two children, to wit, Nancy your oratrix who has intermarried with your orator Robert C. Richey, and Elvira who has since died unmarried and quite young. Administration of Samuel Hill's estate was granted to William Barmore." This Hill family has many ties to the Rosamonds in Abbeville, as John Hill's daughter Susannah Hill was the first wife of Benjamin Rosamond, and his daughter Frances "Fanny" Hill was the wife of Samuel Rosamond, brother of Benjamin Rosamond. Benjamin Rosamond was the grandfather of Sarah Frances Rosamond who later married the Rev. William Henry Hodges, a grandson of this William and Elizabeth Hodges. In 1826, the Walnut Grove Baptist Church was founded near Hodges, SC and Ware Shoals, SC. The founding fathers (and mothers) of this church contained members of the Hill family including Samuel Hill, the Rosamond family (Benjamin and Susannah Hill Rosamond), and a William Hodges and James Hodges. I believe the William Hodges in this record is the William Hodges, Sr., who along with Benjamin Rosamond, was a charter member of the Walnut Grove Baptist Church, founded 24 June 1826. As with Benjamin Rosamond, he is mentioned at least twice in the church minutes which are contained in Volume 2 of "Greenwood Historical Society Scrapbooks" and reprinted in the series of newspaper articles "Our Old Roads" by Harry L. Watson. The following are taken from those articles. ---------- From "Our Old Roads" -------------- No. 101, Year referenced in text 1826. Newspaper article 6 November 1943. (Regarding the Walnut Grove Baptist Church) "The original minute book begins with this entry: A Record of the proceedings of the Baptist Church of Christ at the Walnut Grove on Mulberry Creek in Abbeville District, S. C., constituted on the 24th day of June 1826 by the Rev'd Arthur Williams and Chesley Davis, both of the district aforesaid and the Rev'd Moses Holland, of Pendleton District." The names of the members constituted are as follows: Samuel Hill Nancy Hodges Richard Gaines Mary Youngblood William Graham Peggy Henderson Valentine Young Dicey Sharp Thompson Hodges Jincy Gaines Benjamin Rosemond Susanna Roseman Robert Gaines Francis Roseman William Hodges Jane Huskerson James Hodges Tabitha Hodges It will be noticed the names of the male members are in the first column and the names of the female members are in the second column. And that was the way the members in all the churches sat in the early days and even within the recollection of people of middle age and better today, the men on one side, usually the right side after entrance, and the females on the left side after entrance. No. 1666, Date referenced in text, January 1834. In January of 1834, William Hodges, Sr., a charter member died. The record made in June ... the highly esteemed man died "sometime in January last." He was the father of William Hodges, Jr. and others and his home was near the church. Many older residents remember William Hodges, Jr., one describing him as a "very tall, erect old man who wore a beaver." He was 70 years old when he died. ------------------------------------------ Notes for ELIZABETH BARMORE: >From "Equity Records of Old 96 and Abbeville District, SC" Samuel Hill, now dead, who left as his only heirs and distributees a widow Elizabeth, who has since intermarried with William Hodges, and two children to wit, Nancy your oratrix who has intermarried with your orator Robert C. Richey, and Elvira who has since died unmarried and quite young. Administration of Samuel Hill's estate was granted to William Barmore. Notes for THOMAS H. HODGES: This Thomas Hodges has been identified with Thomas, son of James L. Hodges and Sarah Cummings based on a reasonable, but unproven assumption. In the 1860 census of Choctaw County, MS there are three Hodges households at consecutive dwellings numbered 617, 618 and 619. At dwelling/household 617 is W. H. Hodges and Sarah F. Hodges and their children James, Thomas H., John F., William A., Benjamin F. and Marshall L. Hodges. Also living with this family is Walter A. Hodges. This is known from other research to be the Reverend William Henry Hodges and his wife Sarah Frances Rosamond. In 1860 William Henry Hodges is 37 and was born in SC. At dwelling/household 618 is J.M. Hodges, his wife Rebecca and their children Frances, Mary, Carroll and Cornelius. J. M. Hodges is 36, and was born in SC. At dwelling/household 619 is Thomas H. Hodges and second wife Malinda B. They also have three children of Malinda B. Crowder by her first marriage living with them, these being Sarah M.T.J. Crowder, Martin L. Crowder and Isaac W. Crowder. Thomas H. Hodges is 42 and was born in SC. >From other research it is known that the Rev. William Henry Hodges had brothers named James and Thomas. With the proximity of these three households, and knowing that the brothers moved from SC to Mississippi with their parents ca. 1830, it seems to be a reasonably safe assumption, though unproven as of December 2000, that the Hodges listed above are brothers and sons of James L. 1. [HODGES-L] Another William Hodges No. 1
    2. Jimmy Rosamond
    3. I've been reading the chain of postings about the various William Hodges on the list with great interest, and I'd like to throw another William Hodges into the mix. This is the William Hodges who was in the Old 96 District of SC, in the area that later became Abbeville County. The 1790 census of the Abbeville County, South Carolina shows only one William Hodges, and only one other person is in his household, presumably his wife. His wife's name was Elizabeth based on a Family Group Sheet from Rose-Marie Williams prepared in 1992, and a small privately published book, "The Hodge Family" compiled and edited by Hazel Jan Hodges Parsons. These two sources, which appear to be independent, are in agreement on her given name. In her book, Hazel Parsons states, "From Virginia we have a record of William Hodges, who was born about 1767 and his wife, Elizabeth, moving to South Carolina, ..." Since Elizabeth is not identified by her maiden name, it appears that Ms. Administration of Samuel Hill's estate was granted to William Barmore." This Hill family has many ties to my Rosamonds in Abbeville, SC. John Hill's daughter Susannah Hill was the first wife of my gg-grandfather Benjamin Rosamond, and another of his daughters Frances "Fanny" Hill was the wife of Samuel Rosamond, brother of Benjamin Rosamond. I believe the William Hodges in this record is the William Hodges, Sr., who along with Benjamin Rosamond was a charter member of the Walnut Grove Baptist Church, founded 24 June 1826. As with Benjamin Rosamond, he is mentioned at least twice in the church minutes, which are contained in Volume 2 of "Greenwood Historical Society Scrapbooks" and reprinted in the series of newspaper articles "Our Old Roads" by Harry L. I will post a four generation register report for this William Hodges in a separate email as it is quite long. At least this is how I have his family worked out. 3. Hi, I was hoping someone could give me some help here. My gr-gr-grandfather was named James Isaac Hodges, born Sept. 30, 1830 in Wilson County, Tenn. His father evidently was also named James Hodges and his mother was Sareh Cunningham. I found a James Hodges born in Wilson County, Tn in 1810 who was the son of Josiah Hodges and Mary Wilson, who was the son of Jesse Hodges and Elizabeth Collins. However, I am not sure this if the right James Hodges. Does anyone know who the children of James and Sarah Cunningham. My James Hodges went to California during the Gold Rush and settled in Hollister, California. He married Mary Jane Shirley. Is there anything here that rings a bell? I have been trying to find the missing link for over 25 years and any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Judy Bacon

    2. Bob, Of course AFTER I sent the email I found the reference and they were in Franklin Co (FC). The Choates and the Birds were fellow travellers, in my case from Franklin Co. in 1770 to Dade Co. Missouri in 1850. The Simmons also married Choates and came to Dade Co. (ie, the same or neighboring Sections of specific Township/Range) March 4, 1812, FCVA Deed Bk 6, p. 271, Isham Hodges to John Bird, 337 ac on Simmons Creek January 22, 1814, FCVA Deed Bk 7, p. 83, John and William Bird of FC of the first part, and Samuel Cochran, John Tire and Lewis Wingfield the Trustees of the second part, and Isham Hodges of the County of Sumner and State of Tennessee of the third part. 337 ac on Simmons Creek…in Fredrick Oyler's line… and William A. Burwell's line…desireous to secure the note… Wit: Daniel Coaleson, William Clay, Daniel Ward. Note: Isham Hodges married Elizabeth Clay. Best regards...Janet Hunter

    3. Thanks for the response. I really haven't gotten much feed back from what I put together. I am familiar with the Hodges of Sumner County, Tennessee. They are mostly the descendants of Isham Hodges' sons Isham, Aaron and Asa. My cousin Juanita Patton wrote a book on this part of the family a few years ago. Some other of my family went to Robertson County very early, and then on to Macoupin County, Illinois. I have not had time to dig into that area much, since it is collateral to most of my research, which is on the Hodges family of Franklin County, Virginia. It is interesting that the migration routsof these families are similar. A lot of Franklin County families also moved to Callaway County, Missouri. 2. Bob, I was particularly interested in this little snippet in your Unified Family Theory..from Pittsylvania records: "May 1773 On the information of James Mauran and Hugh Armstrong against William Terry, Augustine Choat, James Daniel, Gideon Rucker and John Hodges and for reasons appearing to the Court it is Ordered that the Sheriff forthwith take them into custody and them safely keep until they shall find sufficient securities for their good behavior. John and Isham Hodges acknowledge their debts of 10 pounds and 5 pounds respectively to the King to be levied on their respective goods and chattels, lands and tenements, with condition that the said John Hodges be of good behavior and keep the peace towards all of his said Majesty's liege people, and especially James Maurer and Hugh Armstrong, one whole year and a day. Pittsylvania Co. (Va.) Court Order Book 2, page 179." The Choates all went to Sumner/Robertson Co TN, and I have a record of Isham and Augustine's likely nephew Valentine Choate together in a deed I think there. Also, in the unlikely case you all don't know, the Sumner Co. wills of several Hodges are online: http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnsumner/willtran.htm <A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnsumner/aaron.htm">HODGES</A>, Aaron, signed 19-Nov-1844, recorded December Term 1844 <A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnsumner/asahodge.htm">HODGES</A>, Asa, signed 8-Oct-1823, recorded November Term 1823 <A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnsumner/asawhodg.htm">HODGES</A>, Asa W., signed 3-Jul-1855, recorded October Term 1871 <A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnsumner/isham.htm">HODGES</A>, Isham Jr., signed 1-Sep-1826, recorded November Term 1826 <A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnsumner/hodgesi.htm">HODGES</A>, Isham Senior., signed 23-Dec-1829, recorded August Term 1839 <A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnsumner/jemima.htm">HODGES</A>, Jemima B., signed 11-Nov-1833, recorded November Term 1833 <A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnsumner/meredith.htm">HODGES</A>, Meredith, signed 5-Feb-1887, recorded December Term 1889 <A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnsumner/wtrowthod.htm">HODGES</A>, Rowland T., signed 28-Oct-1839, recorded December Term 1839 Best Regards, Janet Hunter (not really a Hodges)

    3. Things that make you go Hmmm Just when I thought I had this all wrapped up and tied with a bow, I saw this: Asa W. Hodges, farmer, is the son of R. S. and Mary Ann Hodges, the former of whom was born in Franklin Co., VA in 1807 & removed with his father Asa Hodges to Sumner Co., TN about 1814. He was the eldest of 9 children, only 2 of whom are living: Asa M. Hodges, a citizen of Alabama and Alfred J. Hodges, residing in Texas. R. S. Hodges was a farmer and married in Sumner Co., TN in 1829 to Mary Ann Murphy. They removed to Ohio County, KY in 1847 and were the parents of 9 children, 6 of whom are living in Ohio County. The eldest of these is the subject of this sketch -- Asa W. Hodges, born 10/3/1830in Sumner Co., TN. ..............a removal to KY., at the age of 17 .................First married to Martha Ann Flener 12/23/1858. 3 Children. This was in the archives without attribution, but it appears to be one of those biographies from the late 19th century. Ransom S. Hodges and Asa M. Hodges were sons of Asa Hodges: I.2.1 Asa Hodges b. I would love to know the McDaniel side of the relationship. That name keeps cropping up. Lots of good avenues for research. Bob Hodges

    3. The Echols Connection I have run across a few things that I wanted to add to my discussion of the Hodges family in my series of posts a week or so ago. One is the relations with the Echols family. I think it was Linda Kmiecik that first documented this, but it is useful to help explain the relationships among the early Hodges individuals in Amelia and Halifax Counties, Virginia. Here is link to a good site on the Echols: http://www.virginians.com/redirect.htm?topics&bk A few key points: The Echols lived in Amelia County in the general area of Clementown Mills on the Appomattox River before moving to Halifax County, Virginia. Joseph Echols owned land on Owens Creek in Franklin County in the area where the Franklin County Hodges later settled. Rebecca Echols married James Hodges. Isaac Echols was a witness to several Hodges deeds Elizabeth Echols married a Murphy (possibly Richard Murphy) and was the mother of William Murphy and Joseph Murphy. Another Echols site: http://www.larkcom.net/org/ancestry/echols/history/5748.htm#5906 Note John Echols moved to Madison County, Alabama. Bob Hodges
