This could be an interesting site, but I found some strange things my very first try. I looked up my 4-greats grandfather, Abner Settle, who I know had some land grants on Loop Creek in what is now Fayette Co., WV in the 1830's. First off, it lists that the grants were on Loop Creek in Fayette Co., KENTUCKY. (There is a Fayette Co., KY, which encompasses Lexington and surrounding area, and having lived there for a time myself, I know of no "Loop Creek" in that region.) Then I noted the 80 acre patent was joint with his son James. But when I look up James' 80 acre patent, although it is from Land Grants 86, 1836, page 623 (the same as for the listing for Abner) it says the patent was February 16 1637 not February 16 1837; further it says James' patent was issued by the "Secretary of the Colony serving as the Colonial land office", whereas Abner's was listed as issued by the Virginia Land Office. It sounds like whoever entered the data was trying to make the information fit, instead of realizing that 1637 was a transcription error and should have been 1837. Was the crown actually handing out patents for land in what is now Kentucky only 17 years after the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth? I could be wrong but I don't think so. I'd have to vote to be careful about information taken from this site. Best wishes, June At 01:52 AM 7/3/2001 EDT, you wrote: >Check out this website. It is sponsered by the Library of Virginia.
