Thanks Kenneth, I have Nellie's death record and marraige record. The LDS entry was mine, based on what she had told her children. I now have reason to doubt that her father was really named John, as I have found no evidence (after a 20 year search) of a John Hodge that meets all the requirements. Monday morning quarterbacking says I acted too hastily in submitting her name to the IGI. Bob
Bob, who was the respondant on the death certificate and what was the relationship? Sometimes you can learn more by knowing who gave the information. Also, was the marriage witness a relative? Have you looked for an obit? It might give some other names of relatives. It seems as though her father may have been John E. Hodge (maybe Edward) and her mother probably died when she was still a baby, at least under 10 years old. I don't think her mother would have left her at that age for any other reason. Having a young child, John probably remarried quickly. Do you have the ages of her step-brothers, Eddie (Edward ?) and Johnnie (John ?), might give a clue as to when the mother died and John remarried. Many times under this condition the father would marry the mother's sister. Were these foster parents (Leon and Anna Bair) chosen on a legal basis or just friends of the family? You might find something in the Court Minutes on why it occured. As to whether the Nellie G. listed in Henderson County on the 1880 census is yours, I think not. She said she was born in Dallas and was only a week old at the census. Nellie was a common name in the Livingston, Ky. Hodge's line. I don't feel too bad now for not finding anything, since you've looked for twenty years. Sometimes with the absence of facts, it helps to make an educated guess and try to prove or disprove the assumption.
