Searching for others researching this family. John was born in Caswell County, NC ca. 1796 and is the son of Isaac & Nancy Dameron Hodge. John first married Sally Ables in Caswell County 10 November 1822. Children of this marriage are believed to be: Isaac W (1824-1863), James P (1825-?), Susannah (abt 1830-?) and Charlotte (1834-?). John's 2nd marriage was to the widow Nancy Barber (nee Cox) in Pulaski County 18 October 1836. children are: Josephus (1837-1917), Samuel J (1838-1863), Margaret (1843-1912), Allen (1841 or 1847-1926) and Mary (1847-?). John's 3rd marriage is Elizabeth Lay, a widow in Lincoln County, KY 11 September 1860. Elizabeth's oldest daughter, Cassandra later(about 1863) married Josephus Hodge, son of John and Nancy Cox Hodge. This is my direct line. Can anyone fill in some of the missing details? Thanks!!! Lonnie Shoemaker
Dear Bill, Are you the Hodge-Jackson descendant who has been writing lately? In any case, the Hodge-Jackson connection in my cousin's family is thru Dora (Dorey) Jackson's son, Bill Jackson. Bill had a long time, many years, relationship with Sally Hodge, and they had several children, maybe 6 or 7. The children went by Hodge which was the custom in those days when the parents were not married. Bill Jackson's sister was Angeline Jackson, who married Henry Warden, and they had a dau. Vina, who m. the son of Bill Jackson, her first cousin. This makes for a very straight family tree. As to your ancestor having Jackson for a middle name, it also may be because of the long time admiration of Pres. Andrew Jackson by some folks. There were a lot of sons named Andrew Jackson whatever. And some were just given the middle name, Jackson. I hope, tho, that yours was connected to this family I am working on for my cousin. Barb T
Hi- To your knowledge, was the Jackson's you mentioned related to a Hodge(s) in some manner-- reason for asking is that my Gfather's middle name was Jackson. Bill Hodge ST. Charles Mo.
Hi, In re: to my last message on Angeline Jackson, mother of Vina Warden Hodge, I just took a look at that 1880 Census of Bullitt Co. and noticed that Dora/Dorey Jackson had a step-dau. age 2 living in the home. That should mean that Minerva was not the mother of his other children, including Angeline and Bill Jackson. It is possible that his first wife was also a Minerva?? Barb T
Hi, We have the same family, tho it's not mine. It's my cousin's. Your Angeline Jackson had a brother, Bill Jackson. Their parents, according to my cousin's aunt, were Dorey Jackson and Minerva Hilton or Winslow. They were enum. on the Bullitt Co.KY 1880 Census, E.D. 37, Page 12, Line 44, HH#98. Do you have that info? Bill Jackson had a long relationship with Sally Hodge and they had several children. The names I have, word of mouth only, are Leslie, Frank, Selby, Arthur, Golden, Maudie, and one with an odd name, something like Ott Dealey. There was mention of Hancock Co.Ky but I'm not sure whether they lived there. I know they lived in Bullitt Co.KY and maybe Nelson Co.KY. There was an old family story that they came from Texas in a covered wagon, but I'm not sure if that meant the Hodge's or the Jackson's. I have the name of only one of Angeline Jackson's children, with Henry Warden, that is Vina, born abt. 1890 or 1891. I met Vina Warden Hodge and Arthur Hodge when I was a child. The last time i saw Vina, Angeline's dau, she was"picking over" black-eyed peas to fix for supper. Barb T
I'm a direct decendant - as Leslie and Lena are my Great Grandparents on my mother's side. They had a daughter named Myrtle May Hodge who was my Grandmother. Myrtle married August Paul Gahrmann and they had a daughter named Ethel Mae Gahrmann - and Ethel is my mother. I have other information on vital's and siblings.
According to information I have gathered, Worden Jackson (1875-1898) and Angeline Jackson(1862/64-?) were brother and sister. Angeline married Millard Cassell in 1881 and remarried in 1890 to Henry Warden. The parents were Dora(father) and Minerva(mother) Jackson. On Worden Jackson's headstone it reads: "Accidentally killed by his own gun - Aug. 29, 1898 aged 23 years)
And by any chance do you have an Angie Hodge who had children with Bill Jackson in or near Bullitt Co.KY? There's a Ward or Warden in there somewhere. Barb T
Gerry, do you know the parents and other ancestors of the Nathan A. Hodge b. 1816 that you mentioned at the bottom of your message? By any chance was your Worden Jackson married to an Angeline Jackson?
This could be an interesting site, but I found some strange things my very first try. I looked up my 4-greats grandfather, Abner Settle, who I know had some land grants on Loop Creek in what is now Fayette Co., WV in the 1830's. First off, it lists that the grants were on Loop Creek in Fayette Co., KENTUCKY. (There is a Fayette Co., KY, which encompasses Lexington and surrounding area, and having lived there for a time myself, I know of no "Loop Creek" in that region.) Then I noted the 80 acre patent was joint with his son James. But when I look up James' 80 acre patent, although it is from Land Grants 86, 1836, page 623 (the same as for the listing for Abner) it says the patent was February 16 1637 not February 16 1837; further it says James' patent was issued by the "Secretary of the Colony serving as the Colonial land office", whereas Abner's was listed as issued by the Virginia Land Office. It sounds like whoever entered the data was trying to make the information fit, instead of realizing that 1637 was a transcription error and should have been 1837. Was the crown actually handing out patents for land in what is now Kentucky only 17 years after the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth? I could be wrong but I don't think so. I'd have to vote to be careful about information taken from this site. Best wishes, June At 01:52 AM 7/3/2001 EDT, you wrote: >Check out this website. It is sponsered by the Library of Virginia. Tina, I note with interest your query about William Henry Hodge. Can you provide any further information on your William Henry Hodge? --- like the state(s) of residence? --- approximate dates of birth or death or marriage? --- date(s) William appears in the Federal Census? --- children or parents? I have a couple of William Hodge names in PA and OH, but, as you probably know, William was/is a very popular name in the Hodge clan(s).
